it doesnt look too dark to me....or maybe because i like darker tone painting....
and the background ,due to the brush stroke, it sorta give me an illusion of raining.... did you do this on painter? |

ya i notice about the rotation....
thanks for the tips on the paper types... there's so many tools in painter that i have yet to fully understand what each of them does... most of the stuff i done looks better in pencil sketch compared to the end painting product currently... i painted on primary monitor n browse using 2ndary monitor, 1 project higher resolution in height, while the other in width, i used to drawn in wider one hence retrain me for looking overall, shrinking em will make harder to spot, only realise it after i see em in height monitor, when i posted em in other forum b4 posting here. since i already put it in imageshack, might as well post it here as well.

ok nice automotive illustration hehe. i love automotive illustration, so hehe here are mine. all done in Adobe Illustrator, trace bit to bit from the original pictures and took 52 hours to get it done, but still not in perfection. it's not realism, but something in between.
![]() ![]() Added on February 17, 2008, 12:32 pmok sorry guys, err i think i have wrongly posted. this thread is suposed to be for drawings right? oh mannnn what was i thinking? ok i know, i have not slept yet since i am rushing for deadline for a job and my client is right in front of me surfing with my WiFi at home haha. or maybe it's because of those concept automotive drawings that you guys posted and it got sexcited hehe. either way, forgive me people. My new concept car drawing....
This was Proton Waja GT1....since I like Proton Waja designation....so I created this GT variant, just like LM spec Porsche 911 GT1,Mclaren F1 GTR LM.... ![]() The tail has slightly longer with additional lips,& the front bodywork still retained the Waja trademark Streak line from hood all the way to the front grill, but this time it was made as low slug, sleek front profile. The rear door has transformed to engine bay,so the opening grabber has been design as hood detachable grabber. |

artist community fares stronger when it has equal support from each member of the community. that's how deviantart is so successful
so it's not just about saying "wah gempak" or "pergh!", it's what it means to the artist. ofcourse, artists require the occassional smack-in-the-face critiques as well |

azarimy - *jaw drops*
devilish_maximus - Holy fish, that looks so complex. I wouldn't dream of trying to draw that. You're good, show us more artworks! StarGhazzer - Not bad at all! I like it. Okay so I have a very very simple drawing that I'm pretty proud of, because for the first time I managed to actually draw a drawing fully with my right hand! I'm so happy! Yosh, I'm a left-handed. That's why I'm proud of this drawing. Hahaha. But to judge the drawing itself, it really isn't nice or anything, and lets not get to the sucky anatomy yah, hahaha. Uhm. At least I tried. xD http://img174.imageshack.us/img174/8237/dsc06278hb9.jpg This post has been edited by Myra: Mar 22 2008, 11:20 PM |

![]() try to bump thread. fresh new digital concept work. using painter with wacom tablet. just a some rough sketch work due to some funky ideas cross over between spawn & ironman. i got this ideas since after i saw the movie second time. i want to create something hybrid sort of heroes. sort of dark versus metal !!! most of my concept art is quite big in size at the original, so at this one i already resize it for more easy at view. around 2 hours work. |

May I suggest some wispy mist/smoke around the base of the bridge? Currently it looks too bright and Batman often lurks in the dark rather than glitters in the limelight. And maybe a bat signal amidst the clouds above the skyscrapers... Anyway, it's beautiful. |

QUOTE(Zepx @ Aug 31 2008, 08:10 PM) Very mature artwork.. do you mind to share: thanks - Age (If P&C probably range?) - Media? Since you said custom brush, what do you think the media suits more to? Thanks, I'm really interested in learning artworks and art. i m 30' i m an interior designer and concept designer. mostly my concept design clients is movie production / post production company and game studio. but i still got work under effect company like ILM, WETA DIGITAL, BLUR and some few more base on project basis. most of my job is professional cg contract. but hav to travel around sometime. sometime even doing some comic concept too. most of my job is under NDA. maybe u can drop by here for more info about cg: http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/741758 media : digital. but sometime i hav to do it on analog too. good to hear u interested in learning artworks and art. maybe start some basic body structure drawing will help. FRANK FRAZETTA artwork can be your research too. most of the drawing now is manga base, mean no proper composition or visual structure. maybe the influnce of the manga market. but overall concept designer is different from illustrator coz the idea/concept it sell not the artwork. |

![]() after seeing it, i knew i had to color it in.. haha. ended up with this. ![]() originally i gave her hair a brownish orange hue, but my hard drive crashed and everything else had gone with the wind also. took me a couple of hours again to get the right facial color, still not that satisfied with it. i call her Vermillion.. haha, after that song from Slipknot. |

QUOTE(cymon @ Sep 7 2008, 01:33 AM) very nice work and origin. thx for the comments bro.well pencil stroke. good balancing i would say but only some minor like the character size is some offset from another at scale. wish to see it in complete color. well done. I would say that the scale variation was intentional, but if its too jarring to the point that you commented on it, that means it should be fixed. Which char in particular you think doesn't fit in scale? *not little elf girl tho, she's supposed to be small. XD Thx! This post has been edited by slumberus: Sep 7 2008, 04:22 AM |

yeah he's more of a 'kind green giant' kind of large guy in terms of personality. like a large bookworm geekboy. Maybe I made him TOO docile looking, I'll try to fix it. Thx!
Now you mention about him, I'm starting to see some problems, from the overall pic PoV, he does seem too large and spoils the composition cuz he's standing out too much in the middle of the frame. ie. 'Rule of Thirds' composition clash. |

yup yup its a tablet.
i dont really use it for freehand drawings. kinda new to it still. mostly use it to do graphic copy works in illustrator only. logos n such. its a waste i know for the potential it has to offer. hopefully with this thread, i'll get more hyped up to draw with it. |

I mean I can use painter but it doesn't have that "natural" feel to it. hmmm... i'm not sure how to say this without actually showing u how. certain things are better explained by example rather than description lets start with: painter is subtly different from photoshop in terms of brushes. basically, what painter does is to imitate natural media as close as possible. this includes how each bristle behaves, the paint mixture and texture, how the paint interacts with the paper, and the paper itself. meaning, u can control the moisture absorption of the paper to produce different results. but i never get to use that. if u're more of a photoshop user, u tend to immediately adopt photoshop style in painter. nothing wrong with that, but it might be why u cant grasp that natural feel to it. there's no real way to do this, other than to practice, familiarize, and practice again. it took me about 6 months to complete my transition to painter. what i'm trying to say is, photoshop and painter can both achieve the exact same result. but the method of achieving can be very different. there are brushes in PS that could easily imitate acrylic on knife effects. painter on the other hand attempts to mathematically recreate the acrylic on knife effects. u may need to manually mix the colours gradually in PS, but painter will mix the colours just as the it would mix in the real world. susah gila nak explain without demo |

QUOTE(azarimy @ Oct 7 2008, 10:16 AM) hmmm... i'm not sure how to say this without actually showing u how. certain things are better explained by example rather than description Thanks very much for the explanation, you're right, I don't feel the difference of painter and photoshop (besides blender), but that's probably because I use it like photoshop. I think I need to just paint, paint and paint more on Painter to get to your level. But seriously, great explanation. I know I'll probably take longer since I don't do natural media, but I'll have to try. Thanks again.lets start with: painter is subtly different from photoshop in terms of brushes. basically, what painter does is to imitate natural media as close as possible. this includes how each bristle behaves, the paint mixture and texture, how the paint interacts with the paper, and the paper itself. meaning, u can control the moisture absorption of the paper to produce different results. but i never get to use that. if u're more of a photoshop user, u tend to immediately adopt photoshop style in painter. nothing wrong with that, but it might be why u cant grasp that natural feel to it. there's no real way to do this, other than to practice, familiarize, and practice again. it took me about 6 months to complete my transition to painter. what i'm trying to say is, photoshop and painter can both achieve the exact same result. but the method of achieving can be very different. there are brushes in PS that could easily imitate acrylic on knife effects. painter on the other hand attempts to mathematically recreate the acrylic on knife effects. u may need to manually mix the colours gradually in PS, but painter will mix the colours just as the it would mix in the real world. susah gila nak explain without demo |

familiarizing with painter:
workspace one thing u might wanna try when u start playing with painter is to customize ur workspace. photoshop also allows u to do this, although painter is much more intuitive. ![]() By azarimy the image above is my workspace. pretty simple. i just sort all the brushes that i frequently use into groups and arrange them around the workspace. u can see the pencils window, inks, acrylics, blenders, oils and knives. to create ur own brush shortcuts, just pick a brush u like, and drag and drop onto the workspace. a new group will be created. drag more brushes into the same group if u want, or create a new group. shortcuts ok, if u're used to PS, then this will need the most getting used to. one thing i like about painter is that they grouped all the shortcuts at the bottom part of the keyboard. u dont have to lift ur left hand at all. space - pan c - crop/select v - straight line using the selected brush b - analog brush (the usual brush strokes) n - eraser m - magnify (zoom) l - lasso k - fill backspace - undo i hardly use the rest. but one of the biggest thing that PS cant do, is arbitrarily rotating the canvas at ease. the shortcut is: space + alt + mouse drag what it does is to rotate the canvas on-the-fly just as when u draw on paper. so instead of rotating ur tablet (which can be very bulky), u rotate ur canvas. it's brilliant. in PS, u gotta access the drop down menu and u'd have to key in the degree of rotation. try it to know what i really mean by how easy this shortcut is! |

Thanks for the screenshot, so that's how many different brushes you use per artwork. That's crazy, I just use one brush per category most of the time. I see you got the colour mixing thing going on as well. The shortcuts are much needed (THANKS!) and the ability to rotate the canvas on the fly is great compared to photoshop's cumbersome manual angle input.

thanks for the comment~
i really feel overwhelmed by u guys coz I never have a friend who deeply into arts, and can comment truly and sincerely in art perspective. For the fanart, I'll leave it at that for this time and I'll try to improve with the next fanart. meanwhile below is my latest landscape artwork created today. (my clock is little off so maybe the time is incorrect) I'm researching how to draw/paint a tree and only today I got the formula quite rite, although not too good I guess. Also experimenting "star field" brush. Critical comments are welcome~ Attached thumbnail(s) |

are u using a tablet?
if u are, i recommend changing the brush setting to take advantage of the pressure sensitivity. use dodge brush, or paint the fire on another layer and play around with the layer setting. |

yes im using tablet.
For the fanart artwork, the only setting im using at that time are : Shape Dynamics -> Size jitter -> Pen Pressure On my latest artwork Ive try to add Angle to tilt and Roundess jitter to pen pressure .. Maybe because of lack of angle and round variability the fire seems to be very wierd. Any tips to set up the brush? Im using intuos 3.. This post has been edited by animous: Oct 15 2008, 05:57 AM |

alternatively, u might not need a flower brush for the effect u want.
![]() By azarimy this is a drawing i did about a two years ago. it's based on a lineart, then painted over on several layers. one of the layer is a batik pattern i downloaded off the net. i cant remember exactly, but using a shade pattern, i "wrap" the batik pattern over the curvature of the fabric. it's much easier and more realistic than to "paint" the patterns over it. i cant remember exactly how i did it as it was quite a long time ago. if i have the time i'll dig it up. but u can just google pattern wrapping or mapping images in photoshop. |

thanks for the tips. but kimono only have patterns on certain parts of it so wrapping the texture allover the cloth will not make it a kimono. I try researching more on this later today when i got free time.
nice artwork there azarimy. I've go through ur blog and really like ur "streetfighter" in malaysia classroom artwork. cant really remember what the title is. |

the pattern is totally up to u. it doesnt have to be full. just find whatever pattern u like or paint one urself. the pattern should be painted flat, like batik on a stretched canvas.
using shade map, u will "wrap" the pattern around the fabric. it doesnt really wrap in 3D like in those 3D softwares. hence why i use the inverted commas. u can find the tutorials on the web. |

QUOTE(cymon @ Oct 16 2008, 03:41 PM) yup, tried it. Painter is a good software.. but I think I prefer photoshop because I start doing CG with it. Maybe real painter/watercolor etc artist will benefit from it. I has a realbristle feature which simulate the brush textures, plus it will follow our pen tilt nicely far better than photoshop. I really like the rotate canvas feature, which allow us to rotate the canvas as same as we rotate paper in traditional on paper drawings. Yes we can do it in photoshop but I think we will lose some quality as doing a rotate in photoshop are as same as applying transformation (like filter, brightness etc).i still prefer painter 9. painter xi is release early next year. now testing beta version. |

Tq for pointing out the links~ Comment, accept it if u wish : The light source (sunset/rise) is at the background yet the leaves & girl is illuminated up front. Being the strongest light source around (sunset/rise) the whole scene should be very warm which is true for the entire background, yet the girl is more of a florescent light color scheme. yeah. Girl has much improved. It might help if the highlights on the trees is reduced. its clashing with the girl as the main focus point because the light tones of the leaves and the girl's kimono are too similar. (meaning if you greyscale the picture, you see the whites of the leaves are the same with the girl)

Actually leave the grass as it its. As an object gets further than you. it tends to be more less saturated and clear. (think of those mountain landscapes, diff depth = diff saturation.) I dont disturb he farthest grass..what i did is de saturate the grass nearer to the girl. a little only because i think it is too saturated. I dont know yet what chroma is... Wahh.. really interested to know more about art lah.. after hearing those stuffs. As an IT graphic student what I learn in the Uni was not knowledge like u tell me... The best Ive learn is how to draw a picture with opengl programming.. Last opengl project takes nearly 25 A4 pages of codes just to draw a building which u can do in less than half hour in paint or photoshop.. lol |

QUOTE(azarimy @ Oct 23 2008, 10:28 PM) lol... nice. u're really great at ur own style of art~ but her hand is not grasping the sword properly.. why she holding the sword upward while "bathing?" is another question.. |

my drawings almost NEVER grasp anything properly. it's part of the grace that i wanted to show. i learned silat, and most of its weapon techniques are against holding a weapon too tight. it should be firm, but not rigid. so this principle is translated in most of my drawings.
and she's not bathing. more like splashing wine on herself. and yes, she's drunk, so it doesnt really matter how she's holding her sword |

Hmm always wanted to know how to use photoshop. So far only familiar with MS paint using the airbrush to create my avatar.
Anyone know of any good link to a photoshop tutorial? Also what version should I use? |

that's brilliant, akakuma. 10-15 hours might be well worth it. it's not something i can do anymore. most of my paintings have a maximum 4 hour limit. cant spend too long on a particular painting.

@akamuka - wow.. very high quality work id say.. 10 - 15 hour continuous ?
If 3 hour a day that will be 5 day.. @BennyT - very sketchy.. your own style maybe? @Mclelun - nice, simple and clean artwork. Unfortunately vector is not my favourite type of art though.. haha but still urs is good. @Azarimy - quite a good artwork u hav there. U say 4 hours limit? hmm I try my best not to finish my work within a specific time so that I can improve it everytime I notice something wrong in it. Some of my work takes almost a month to finish, just to waiting for forumer comment and to improve it. Alhough is not as good as akamuka though... |

Im not really that agree with azarimy statement... To me good or not good painter/artist/ or an architect/engineer who draw/paint is determined by the work they done, not by the time they need to do their work. Dont just put all architect or engineer as same category as yourself. Everyone is different and I believe anyone with any job can do their best at their drawing. Limiting time to draw is only one person preference..
Example are this engineer who draw many artwork which some of them takes month to complete. http://getty.deviantart.com/ Instead of thinking what I can archive in limited time, I instead keep doing the artwork till I satisfied. along the way I also learn how to do this and that as some object I would like to draw is not in my knowledge yet. So a this point of time, im try my best to improve my drawing as much as possible, then after I acquire neccesary knowledge I'll then keep practicing until I can complete a drawing in short time. Its the same concept as learn how to type on a keyboard, or even when we cook. At the first time we learn how to chop the onion.. then after a few month (or maybe years) u can now chop the onion very fast just like professional chef.. I'm striving to work as an animator, so I also need to do my artwork in very limited time. Imagine drawing 8 frame per second as a standard of japan animation, they still can archive very good quality (even in High Definition BluRay quality) in very limited time. that what im trying to archive now.. |

okay let me stop u right there. i shall explain my position for u to be REALLY clear about what i'm saying.
i'm an architect by training and profession. i'm also a lecturer of architecture. i also hold a masters in virtual environment which involves alot about programming and digital architecture. and finally, i'm currently in my final year of my doctorate, specializing in architecture education, which hopefully by the end of next year makes me a specialist in educating and developing an architect. now lets go over ur points: QUOTE(animous @ Nov 1 2008, 01:25 PM) Okay these shows that u have your own displine but its not generally an architect discpline isnt? yes, it shows my discipline, but also any architect's discipline. it's central to the architecture discipline, which i've explained briefly. QUOTE Hello there.. manga artist for example need to complete their work within a specific time too.. artist also need to obey time limit u know. Every student need to complete anything within deadline... programmers, architect, artist student all are same in this case.. i never said others didnt work by deadline. dont add things that i did not say/write architects ARE measured by deadline bcoz if they couldnt complete it, it's still can be measured. which is difference from other courses, where if u cant finish it, u FAIL. an incomplete work cannot be measured/graded. there's a big difference here. also, regardless of working or studying environment, people arent gonna wait for the architect to produce his BEST design. that'll take forever, coz the stop point of work is deadline, not perfection. artists would prefer to stop at perfection. QUOTE time is not everything, knowledge is the one who determine whos the best. btw, FYI the design of KLCCÂ (only the design) are not created by an architect which is by Tun Mahathir.. its design is actually a islamic square which is famous in masjid grills when looking from above. He meanwhile only need pencil and paper to design it. mahathir did not design KLCC. it was design by the cesar pelli, an argentinian architect based in the US. he specializes in hi-rise buildings bcoz his firm also houses a number of engineering experts. the usage of the islamic pattern is also caesar pelli's idea, which mahathir agreed upon. mahathir suggests that it has islamic image to it, which pelli interpreted by using the pattern. feel free to find books on caesar pelli and read about him. QUOTE as I said before everyone works within time. But in this case You and I are clearly different because Im assuming you are working now isnt? Im meanwhile am a student who dont have experience with real job situation yet. Archive the best within time only applicable when u are in working situation which is true only for the work which is related to the job.. not ur hobby or drawing or cooking or anything. Im asking u now do you really apply ur "architect attitude" to any work u do? Cooking within lets say 4 hours limit, or cleaning house within 4 hours limit? we do everything within a time limit. life has a limit. architects just made this central to their life. architects are lateral thinkers, they juggle between numerous tasks in the same time. usually architects work with 3-4 different projects simultaneously at different stages. if u dont work within the time limit, u just wont be able to function. yes, i'm working. but the architecture education is actually very similar to architectural practice. architects learn by doing. the design studio is a direct simulation of the architect's office, bcoz the best way for us to train an architect is actually to dump them in the office and let them learn by doing. so the design studio in universities are actually a simulation of the real world. they just take out the risks involved and also substitute the reward (payment/salary) with grades. i dont switch off the architect in me. so why do u keep arguing? QUOTE Why u are treating everyone (in this case architect) equal? as I said before knowledge is the one which is important. if they can get the knowlege and skill within short time they CAN become good. If they can only get the knowledge and skill longer than others they also CAN become good. It does not necessarily need to train alot though.. i didnt say everyone is equal. i didnt even generalize. architects are who they are bcoz the training is the same all over the world. however, the training is different from what u normally see in other fields. just ask any architect friends. see if they disagree with me. i didnt argue that knowledge is important or not. the measure of the architect is the output, not input. this is different from other types of education. during SPM, u're measured based on what u store inside ur brains. u memorize everything, put a bit of analysis on it, and u should be able to regurgitate everything and get a good score. architecture doesnt work that way. it's what u do with what u have to maximize output that's important. a person could read less but still produce outstanding results. what i'm saying here is, it doesnt matter about how long it takes for an architect to gather knowledge. architects are known to extend their studies by 1 or 2 semesters. it's normal. but like i said, we're not measuring input. it's the output. QUOTE This clearly show u are in working person perspective. As I dont have the knowledge yet so I will try my best to get the best result as possible as I currently dont have a proper deadline yet. BUT in art perspective if I can draw very fast but the result is just so so, people will not appreciate my work and I also lose my business too isnt? so in my previous post Ive said that I'll improve my work till he best then only I try to practice to shorten the time to do the artwork. But this doesnt show that neither u or me is in a wrong way.. its just our perspective of thinking is different. sorry, but in respect to architecture, there is only one perspective. u just see more the higher u climb. QUOTE Your word quite make me angry a bit but I take it positively okay.. I dont know how to tell this in proper word but does that mean if u want to draw u became an artist, when u cleaning ur house u became orang gaji and when u fixing ur car u became mechanic? no right? of course people have their own standing and influence and I belief there is nothing wrong with your way of standing. i'm not sure why u're getting too worked up. like i said, there's nothing wrong of being or thinking like an artist. they strive for perfection irregardless of resources. i'm saying that architects have a very different frame of mind. and i dont understand how that upsets u. hope this will clear all the argument and hopefully u take it positively ok.. we've already established that architects and artists view things differently. which i'm sure u agree right now. u wanna work on ur art for however long u wish. perhaps u're still viewing it as a hobby. but hey, that's how artists work, which i've said several posts earlier. but that's NOT how i work. so i would appreciate that u dont tell me how i work, or how architects supposed to think or function This post has been edited by azarimy: Nov 1 2008, 10:22 PM |

QUOTE okay let me stop u right there. i shall explain my position for u to be REALLY clear about what i'm saying. i'm an architect by training and profession. i'm also a lecturer of architecture. i also hold a masters in virtual environment which involves alot about programming and digital architecture. and finally, i'm currently in my final year of my doctorate, specializing in architecture education, which hopefully by the end of next year makes me a specialist in educating and developing an architect. Hmm okay.. you say : QUOTE i didnt even generalize but what is this ? : QUOTE - yes, it shows my discipline, but also any architect's discipline. unless u dont know what generalization mean.. : To speak in generalities, or in vague terms; - it's central to the architecture discipline, which i've explained briefly. - architects ARE measured by deadline bcoz if they couldnt complete it, it's still can be measured. - architects just made this central to their life. architects are lateral thinkers, ..... - however, the training is different from what u normally see in other fields. just ask any architect friend - it doesnt matter about how long it takes for an architect to gather knowledge. - architects are known to extend their studies by 1 or 2 semesters. it's normal.... - i'm saying that architects have a very different frame of mind. U are treating all architect the same... thats what I mean generalize..... If u think that way is the truth then its okay. You have more experience and lived longer than me anyway. Just to make sure Im are on my own I always say myself as "I", not as an artist. Saying Im as an artist is the same as making everyone as equal as me which is known as generalization. about the KLCC.. okay about the KLCC my point is incorrect but the correct one is for the KLCC, Pelli envisioned two slim 88-storey towers, each with a 44-storey bustle or annex. The floor pattern was based on a 12-pointed star but this was later changed to an eight-point star on Dr Mahathir's suggestion, as being more representative of Islamic design. source : http://pmproject.doubleukay.com/klcc_hist.html Your other points are also arguable but lets stop k. I said u have ur own perspective and I have mine. It doesnt matter if u have only 1 perspective or many who cares anyway. I see things in my own way and u in ur own way. Did I say ur way is wrong. If yes then I apologize for any argument i make okay. Im here just to brush my art skill and to gather more knowledge for my own ambition. |

What I said is u are traiting every architect the same. Some of things can be common but some are not. Your words " it's central to the architecture discipline", "architects just made this central to their life. architects are lateral thinkers, .....", "i'm saying that architects have a very different frame of mind." and etc are some points which are personal to certain human and is questionable wheter it is applicable to all architects or not. I strongly believe it is wrong to assume everyone (in this case architect) is the same in terms of personal behavior. Saying like "all architects design buildings" is meanwhile are not personal but a specification of what architect are as same as I say "All artist draws" and "All Painter paints". QUOTE(animous @ Nov 1 2008, 08:44 PM) generalize or "common characteristic", common traits whatever is just a play of word . What I said is u are traiting every architect the same. Some of things can be common but some are not. Your words " it's central to the architecture discipline", "architects just made this central to their life. architects are lateral thinkers, .....", "i'm saying that architects have a very different frame of mind."Â and etc are some points which are personal to certain human and is questionable wheter it is applicable to all architects or not. I strongly believe it is wrong to assume everyone (in this case architect) is the same in terms of personal behavior. Saying like "all architects design buildings" is meanwhile are not personal but a specification of what architect are as same as I say "All artist draws" and "All Painter paints". i'm sorry to be an arse, but i still disagree.being an architect is not just being able to draw or design buildings. i dont like to name drop, but people like prof. nigel cross and prof. bryan lawson, both leading experts in architecture education, have helped established that architects have a very different frame of mind than most other professions. they've drawn research from educationists like john dewey and donald schon, both whom have done an extensive amount of work on psychology and education. architects subscribe to the "designer protocols", a guiding principle that governs how they work, function and think. which is also what i'm a part of. medical practitioners subscribe to the hippocratic oath that governs how they work and live, but doesnt affect how they think. it is not an assumption that architects "think" in a specific way. it has been established in academic journals, international symposiums and conferences. it is a characteristic of all architects to be this way bcoz of the training. i believe u have not met alot of architects or architecture students, have u? well, u'll understand this when u met a few of them. if u cant find them, try other designers like interior, landscape, graphic, industrial or even fashion designers. they all follow the designer protocols in one way or another, but it is more prevalent amongst architects. i know it's hard for u to accept that architects or designers have a specific way of thinking. i totally understand. i'm sure u have come across edward de bono's "lateral thinking" concept (1967), right? try digging a bit on de bono's works, u'll find that the concept of lateral thinking run parallel to donald schon's "reflective practitioner", a research on the architects way of thinking. nigel cross also have proposed that architects utilize very specific part of the brain actively than other people, and eventually bryan lawson coined the "designerly way of thinking" in the early 90s, cementing the concept of a separate and unique frame of mind that the architects have. so there. i'm not generalizing nor playing with words. individual architects are unique in terms of style and abilities, but they all subscribe to a similar frame of mind. but like i said earlier, they could switch it on and off. but once they've gone through the training for 5 years, they'll have it embedded in their brains whether they like it or not. it is part of becoming an architect that makes them this way. Before I write my view I just want to mention I haven't read all the thread much so correct me if I'm wrong. This is MY opinion.
Look..... architect and artist can be a form of profession. So can they be a form of personal interest. If you choose to make them a profession, then they can be time-based (depending if the client wants fast result or quality) and vice versa. Like I mention before (probably in another thread, I can't remember) art is very subjective. A pile a junk can also be an art depending on people's perception on it. Architect mostly involve designing "stuff" even a futuristic garbage truck for all I care. Architect may combine art into their design or they choose design for practicality sake like aerodynamic wise. Also there are things call bad and good architect/artist. A bad one only design for the sake of convenience and money. A good one takes account of artistic nature of the design (of course takes account of convenience and money too but main priority is art and practicality). What does this mean? It means depending on which categories you are in, you may have your own idea of how it should be define. My definition: Architect is one that uses their engineering knowledge (else we may a have possible 'london bridge is falling down' scenario by now) to design new "stuffs" be it mechanical, structural or etc which has a purpose in society (building to live in, car to travel with). They can choose to combine artwork into their work depending IF the client/boss he/she work for wants it. Artist do not need engineering knowledge. They can form their masterpiece out of anything. They can defy logic if they want to. Remember also "people perception" into the equation. You may think it's garbage but I think it's art. Like I said, I'm not a patient reader thus I did not read all the previous thread. i'm just standing on my statements that architects subscribe to a specific mindset, which animous conveniently called "generalizing". i understand his opinion, assuming he's not familiar with the design world. so i elaborated my points further to illustrate that being an architect is not just graduating with an architectural degree. design is a mindset. it's an attitude But regarding being architect, well...., probably you should put in the world "profession" in front of "architect" to clear up the "architect is not just graduating with an architectural degree". For me, I will only acknowledge those with a degree to be a 'true' architect. Hmmm still confuse? lets look at the some of the google definitions: # someone who creates plans to be used in making something (such as buildings) wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn # An architect is a person who is involved in the planning, design, and oversight of a building's construction. The word "architect" (Latin: architectus) derives from the Greek arkhitekton (arkhi, chief + tekton, builder") . ... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Architect # A professional who designs buildings or other structures, or who prepares plans and superintends construction; A person who plans, devises or contrives the achievement of a desired result; To design, plan, or orchestrate en.wiktionary.org/wiki/architect # A designation reserved, usually by law, for a person or organization professionally qualified and duly licensed to perform architectural services. www.aiapvc.org/glossary.htm # A person who normally functions as a creator, coordinator, author of the drawings and specifications and the general administrator of construction. www.officefinder.com/glossary.html # One who has completed a course of study in building and design, and is licensed by the state as an architect. One who draws up plans. www.dadsconstruction.com/orange-county-remodeling-terms.html bla bla and so many other definition. As you can see the word "architect" contains a lot meanings. It's like the word "garbage", a worthless person can be a "garbage" but you say it can only be used on physical object like a used pair of socks. Give it a rest. He/she may have see it in another perspective. Let's get back to the topic. Else create a new thread. This post has been edited by LeechFever: Nov 2 2008, 08:37 AM |

QUOTE(animous @ Nov 2 2008, 02:28 AM) Points of LeechFever : lol, it's not about winning. it's about clarifying the common misconception. i have no problems accepting ur opinion, but not before i've exhausted all means to convince u otherwise. people always assume architects and other designers are artists, belonging to the "art family" as opposed to "science family". but actually we're not. artists are artists, designers belong a union of both groups. infact, there are characteristics of designers that doesnt belong to either groups, which suggests that designers (referring to all in the design group) are an entirely different family altogether.I totally agree with ur statement Azarimy.. pls stop k. QUOTE(animous @ Nov 7 2008, 12:24 AM) Sorry leechfever to dissapoint you.. I didnt manage to do the smoke effect propely so I end up safe with only zoom blur instead on the ground. Some tweak here and there after CnC at Animewallpaper forum and below is the end result. Hmmm not much of a difference from previous one. I suggest you keep working on the smoke effect though, up to you. Cause the scene is in a desert. If you swing your sword wouldn't there be a sand dust following the path? Imagine in motion if the guy swing his sword and half way through, what would the sand smoke be at? Capture that image and translate it into your art. Still great work btw. |

nope
to make it simplify he just have to make little smoke for the impact cause if he's swinging the sword he'd be dead i assume it's a locked up situation never really watch anime |

QUOTE(Benny-T @ Nov 7 2008, 05:15 PM) nope Its more of like a full swing with the killing intent. Just as they are about to strike each other necks, both of them stopped at the last moment knowing that it could end in a stalemate. Also, they stare at each other for a mere seconds (based on the slow motion capture animation) before they retreat to original positions. Meaning there should still be some "dirt" flying around. This one is like, hey you move first..and the other is like..no you go first...kind of lockup scenario.to make it simplify he just have to make little smoke for the impact cause if he's swinging the sword he'd be dead i assume it's a locked up situation never really watch anime Anyway, it's up to the artist to decide but this is just my opinion as the "viewer". haha its really good opinion from both of you~ ya I guess leechfever has watch the scene so yes there should be some smoke/dust there but as my skill level are pretty low I cant manage to make it right. If you notice my drawing has a feeling of "Keras". it is pretty obvious in my previous work.. and you know if you try to apply your new learned skill on your hard-effort artwork you will see how it will going to be somehow errgh.. at least in my case.. haha
btw I'll try to applied smoke effect on my next artwork.. which I would like draw a scenery of cooking barbeque probably on picnic. It still early idea though but I'll make sure I'll applied the effect. |

I am currently working on the following attached. Not finish yet btw. Need some criticism before I continue. Like the body proportion not right or I should use different colour for the hair or etc.
Note: This is just very rough sketch I did (coincidentally) so the colours are not up to standard...yet and so are the black linings but that I will fix later. This post has been edited by LeechFever: Nov 9 2008, 10:01 PM Attached thumbnail(s) |

I used to draw and scan but since I moved, I don't have a space for scanner anymore let along an expensive tablet. So I just make do with what I have. QUOTE(Benny-T @ Nov 20 2008, 07:23 PM) ahh took me quite a while to get used to photoshop Can blend one. If you have a, what you call it?......transparency function on the brush, there is a trick to it. For your info I don't even use function called smudge, blend or smooth cause I'm just using paint.net which is a free software (cannot remember where I get it already) for the layer function and two buttons mouse for switching two colours cant really blend using photoshop unlike painter Added on November 20, 2008, 7:23 pmahh i can see a nice work coming up again This post has been edited by LeechFever: Nov 20 2008, 07:32 PM |

photoshop quite ram consuming compare painter.
that why i use photoshop under 64bit, to enable detect more ram. so far it is more better compare 32bit. |

How is it? What colour for the hair u guys can suggest? I was thinking blond but it seem to common. Critics are welcome. i think it should look better if the outline is thinner. This post has been edited by kpchoo29: Nov 21 2008, 07:22 PM |

QUOTE(kpchoo29 @ Nov 21 2008, 07:13 PM) lol will do. Mouse drawing ain't exactly easy as it look. Took me a couple of tries to get the proportion right. Feel that if I start thinning here and there, the result will be different than expected. So I might or might not thin out the lines until the very end. There is a technique I wanted to try later just like the "ironman" I did to refine everything. For now, it's colour decision. This post has been edited by LeechFever: Nov 21 2008, 07:47 PM |

In the Dead Space game, that's how you find out your health. 3rd person view gameplay also. lol. |

Still bit messy for me, though. Try tracing it again and this time with solid lines. Possible some colour will do nice.

QUOTE(LeechFever @ Nov 27 2008, 07:42 PM) the krump of course. Looks nice......very nice. Love the muscle tone and the lighting effect. Will be interesting how you fare on the pants due to the different texture if u continue. thnx for the comment.. me somehow didnt satisfied with my artwork.. the main problem is i couldnt draw a nice background for it.. i'm quite ok with human figures but when it comes to background, i'm sucks..
