Watched it on Sunday, HFR 3D/Atmos at GSC 1U.
One word -
elongated.
Every year, you look forward to a movie that happens to be released right at the end of it all. "The Hobbit (Part 2)" was the one to watch out for in 2013... and was it a worthwhile wait to see Bilbo and the Dwarves continue their adventure?
Well, the simple answer is this - if you want to know what happens next and did enjoy the first one, watch it. However, if you didn't really like Part 1, you are not going to be pleased with Part 2.
I would go as far as to say if you remotely think Part 2 might draw you even closer to The Hobbit, you will be so wrong!"Desolation of Smaug" is the result of wanting to have more - - more of something unnecessary. It wasn't just overly long, it was quite a pain to sit through the first half of the movie for anything worthwhile to happen. And Smaug, oh you mighty beast, how long do I have to wait for you!
I was getting more and more irritated as time went on. It seem just as the mountain is up ahead, something will hold them back... 1 step forward, 2 steps backwards. I was really, really hoping things would improve as it went on.
Unfortunately, no. The whole silliness with Kili and Tauriel - really?

It just slowed the already slow movie even further. And when Kili 'took an arrow to the knee'... it was annoying as s***. Slowly, a 9/10 (started out nicely..well, nice-ish...) dropped to an 8.5, to an 8, 7.5... slowly and gradually it was becoming more and more mediocre and stretched.
At the end of it all, Smaug couldn't do crap.
He could bring down an entire village, but not a few fat dwarves. And a Hobbit. Right in front of him. Reminds me of how "Godzilla" (1998) struggled to swallow a damn car (~with the main actors in it~) when he was able to easily bring down an entire city.
Part 2 of The Hobbit is a letdown, expectations... easily was to better than the first. In some ways, while much more sinister and seeing Sauron (the eye... the whole lot with the iconic music) and Legolas were the only pleasing factors. Oh, and while Smaug couldn't do crap, Benedict Cumberbatch did an absolute stellar of a work for the voice acting bit. The dragon was also quite intimidating... but sadly, Peter Jackson chose to prolong everything for the sake of *perhaps* getting a Part 3/trilogy.
Oh well, I will definitely be seeing Part 3. I thought Part 3 was to be in the Summer of 2014 for some reason... then realized, it is another 1 year wait.
7/10Lengthy, tedious, and stretched... a few good bits here and there, but insufficient to make "Desolation of Smaug" a movie worth recommending. The direction they took with Smaug is by far the biggest letdown of the whole movie. *Round and round we go... chasing the mice...*
