First look: Evangeline Lilly's elf warrior in 'The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug'
![]() QUOTE When The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hits theaters on Dec. 13, there will be a fresh face among the residents of Middle-earth: Tauriel, an elf warrior played by Evangeline Lilly of Lost fame. “She’s slightly reckless and totally ruthless and doesn’t hesitate to kill,” says Lilly. She’s also not found anywhere in J.R.R. Tolkien’s original fantasy novel, or in any of Tolkien’s other writings for that matter. Director Peter Jackson and his co-writers on the Hobbit trilogy, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, invented the character to expand the world of the elves of Mirkwood Forest — and to bring some more female energy to the otherwise male-dominated Hobbit narrative. “Tauriel is the head of the Elven Guard,” Lilly explains. “She’s a Sylvan Elf, which means she’s of a much lower order than the elves we all became acquainted with in The Lord of the Rings. She doesn’t hold the same kind of status that Arwen or Galadriel or Elrond or Legolas do — she’s much more lowly. She sort of goes against the social order of the elves a little bit.” Tauriel isn’t only a fierce warrior; she has a softer side, too. “She will definitely have a love story,” Lilly says. “I can’t give away too much about it. It’s not a huge focus but it is there and it is important and it does drive Tauriel and her story and her actions.” Will that romance involve Orlando Bloom’s Legolas, by any chance? Lilly won’t say definitively one way or the other, but she does offer this much: “Tauriel’s relationship with Legolas is significant. They’ve known each other since they were children, and Legolas’ dad, [Elven king] Thranduil, has a soft spot for Tauriel and sees something very special in her. So if you grow up side by side, and your dad has a very special spot in his heart for this young woman who’s a fantastic warrior, I think it’s hard not to notice her.” She laughs. “That’s probably as much as I can say.” Lilly is well aware that some Tolkien purists will be skeptical about the introduction of a new character. “I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that there are going to be people who will totally hate Tauriel, think that she shouldn’t be in the movie, that it’s a betrayal of Tolkien, and no matter what I do it won’t be right,” she says. “There will be everything between that and people who adore her and think it’s such a fun thing to have added to the film. I kind of got prepped for that being on Lost, because we had avid fans who were really extreme in their feelings about the show and its characters. But I think if anyone knows how to respect Tolkien, it’s Peter, Fran and Phil. And Tauriel fits perfectly in that world.” TLDR; -new female character, an elf named Tauriel that is created by P Jackson & co for Desolation of Smaug -because it adds female energy to the movie -most probably will have love story with Legolas in the upcoming movie -that is all soya sauce ----x----- I don't know how I'm supposed to feel about this... 98% of me is saying that this is completely unnecessary btw she looks like a female version of Link This post has been edited by janisu: Jun 6 2013, 01:29 AM |

kinda disappointed in this one.
like the other person mentioned, it lacks the epicness. I liked The Unexpected Journey, and at least it made me go "Wow." TDOS made me slouch and rest my head on my hand a few times, and they pretty much dropped out a few favourable scenes in the book that would've made the movie much better.. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « some scenes were fun, like » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « the battle scenes were mehhhh. maybe lotr had set too high an expectation for me Conclusion, TDOS was poorly written. 2.7/5 for me |

QUOTE(Frankmiller92 @ Dec 13 2013, 02:00 AM) THIS. Heart melted away during that moment.TDOS plays it in the beginning I think, but I felt blank lol. EDIT: oh wait i thought you meant the Shire song. but yeah the soundtrack of TDOS didn't make an impact :l This post has been edited by janisu: Dec 13 2013, 02:42 AM |

QUOTE(Claire Farron @ Dec 14 2013, 07:39 AM) Hmm no one still haven't mentioned about that Twilight level love triangle? Also Smaug while he looks great and all, and that scene between him and Bilbo was quite interesting, it all went downhill when he starts chasing the dwarfs. He looks so dumb and clumsy. Is he like that in the novel too? I thought dragons supposed to be intelligent and cunning? Reminded me of Tom from Tom and Jerry when he tried to chase them. Also Smaug looks more like a wyvern than a dragon, no? Anyway GSC still goofing around? Apparently the writers f*cked up Smaug in this one...the Smaug in the novel wasn't dumb and clumsy like the movie Smaug. In the book after he got pissed off by Bilbo, he straight unleashed all his rage on Laketown w/o all the dwarf-chasing as depicted in the movie... |

QUOTE(don^don @ Dec 17 2013, 12:00 PM) i can't stop imagining benedict cumberbatch's face instead of the cg dragon throughout the whole gold scene. if you imagine his face when he is sauron and speaking that mordor language, lagi funny well that's what i did and i could barely hold back my scoffs when everyone was like "whoaaaaa sauron whoaaaaa" |

QUOTE Inside Information... Our journey to make The Hobbit Trilogy has been in some ways like Bilbo's own, with hidden paths revealing their secrets to us as we've gone along. “There and Back Again” felt like the right name for the second of a two film telling of the quest to reclaim Erebor, when Bilbo’s arrival there, and departure, were both contained within the second film. But with three movies, it suddenly felt misplaced—after all, Bilbo has already arrived “there” in the "Desolation of Smaug". When we did the premiere trip late last year, I had a quiet conversation with the studio about the idea of revisiting the title. We decided to keep an open mind until a cut of the film was ready to look at. We reached that point last week, and after viewing the movie, we all agreed there is now one title that feels completely appropriate. And so: "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" it is. As Professor Tolkien intended, “There and Back Again” encompasses Bilbo’s entire adventure, so don’t be surprised if you see it used on a future box-set of all three movies. Before then however, we have a film to finish, and much to share with you. It’s been a nice quiet time for us—Jabez and I happily editing away in a dark cave in Wellington—but those halcyon days are quickly coming to an end. It will soon be time to step into the light. Expect to see and hear much about The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies in the coming months. And there’s also The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Extended Cut, which we’re in the process of finishing, with over 25 mins of new scenes, all scored with original music composed by Howard Shore. It’ll be a fun year! sauce |
