You can go into Australia immediately once it is approved. You could also work, since the new visas now come with permission to work.

Your visa should have an effective start date. You can go to Australia starting that date. When you check-in at the airport, they will check if you are "Ok to board" before issuing your boarding ticket smile.gif

And just FYI, if your visa was granted before the 28th April 2008 and you intend to work, you have to wait for your course to start, then apply for a work visa.

If your visa was granted after that date, your work visa should be included with your student visa. smile.gif

My intention is to study and spend my time with my friends in Australia instead of working, I still waitting offer letter from TAFE, am getting butterfly in my tummy after long waitting ...

FAQ:
Does it change when I can work, and the hours I can work?
No. Work rights for student visa holders haven’t changed. Students are still not allowed to work until they have started their course and the hours they can work have not changed. They can work up to 20 hours a week while their course is in session (excluding any work undertaken as a registered component of their course of study or training) and they can work unlimited hours during scheduled course breaks. Family members of students are not allowed to work until the student begins their course. They are allowed to work up to 20 hours per week at all times. Family members of students who have started a masters or doctorate course may work unlimited hours.

Cool, which TAFE campus are you enrolling to?

Offer letters usually are pretty fast... I got mine within a week of application, then paid up and got my CoE the following 2 days.

Then the student visa which I did online and was done within a week too smile.gif

Still some time before the July semester starts... hope everyone gets their paperwork in order way before it does biggrin.gif

They ( IDP ) haven't give me any sign of update at all, and I choose TAFE Gymea or St. George which is close to my friend's house in Sydney

Whenever i tell im studying in UNSW,they always ask me as if Melbourne Uni is much much better in engineering than UNSW.UNSW is like some crap uni to them.

Only those who are ignorant would have such a view. UNSW is a highly-respected engineering school and I doubt anyone in this profession would make such a statement.

I dont know.Almost everyone give me this opinion.Besides, all my friends go to Melbourne to study.Im the only one studying here.

The reason i choose UNSW because of their more practical approach in teaching, cheaper than Melbourne, they dont force me to learn economics or any non-engineering related subjects(unlike Melbourne which i hate a lot) and UNSW is better in engineering than Melbourne.

I read a somewhere in this thread that Bentley has a high crime rate. OMG. I'm going to Curtin Uni this July. Needless to say I'm kinda worried. Is it true about the crime rate? So does anyone have any advice for newbies?

Btw, anyone else going this July? CBS?

My goodness, reassessing my documents took UNSW 2 weeks and until now it's still not yet being settled.
I've already bugged their admission department for god knows how many times already laugh.gif
I'm a bit worried because I still haven't paid my deposit yet, visa not done yet (Not without the receipt).
What should I do now?

What did they say? In spite of their inefficiencies, it cannot possibly take that long.

Kind regards

I previously got my offer letter for a major that I don't want to study. So I asked them to change my major. But then changing my major means they have to reassess my documents. So there goes ...
And the deadline for me to secure a place at UNSW is 21st May.
doh.gif doh.gif doh.gif

EDIT: Thanks to Chris, I phoned the school and they say it's changeable over there at UNSW.
So it's all great now, I have to finish my online application and accept the offer. brows.gif

Anyways 1 question here. Second session starts at 21th of July. Orientation (I want to go) is a week earlier.
When should I arrive at Australia? Have to purchase the OSHC so I have to plan further ahead.
NOTE : I have a place to stay already. I plan to go at 10th of July, I wonder if that's fine.

Correction: Week zero (Orientation Week) starts on the 21st of July, your lectures and tutorials will start a week after (28/7).
Generally speaking, if you already have a place to stay, arriving 1 week before uni starts should be good enough. You should have enough time to settle down and explore a little bit to get yourself used to the environment within that week.

I lived in Bentley for about 2-3 years... had 2 break-ins during that time... and one car crashed into my porch >.<

Its mainly because of the abos in the area... and that its a student area so its a high profile target for opportunists. So make sure the place you rent is grilled up and park your car(s) out of sight from the main road.

Going in July to take my IT course smile.gif But will be in East Perth TAFE. Feel free to PM me if you need more info about Perth though smile.gif

I've dealt with IDP before (part-time education agent tongue.gif), they're not the most efficient of the lot. Make sure you chase them up till you get all your things done... don't leave it to them is my advice tongue.gif

laugh.gif Seriously, I've emailed and phoned them more than I can imagine laugh.gif
Well, IDP was okay though, I gave up talking with them since they're a bunch of slowpokes.
I talk directly to the University and you can't imagine how many emails I've sent over laugh.gif Maybe not as bad as you but I think it's a bit over laugh.gif
