Yeah, city and state could work too.

Anyway,I think i need some help in renting in Sydney.I still have no permenant accommodation yet.The colleges didnt reply me at all.Is there anything i can do while im in malaysia, other than sending the temporary accommodation form to ISS?
Yeah, thats the problem.Like that,i also can do it myself lah.Applying isnt the hardest part.
*
You might want to consider ringing the colleges personally to check on your application status, but afaik, if you don't get it by now, chances of you securing a place there is pretty slim.

If private accomodation is in your list, then try looking around these 2 websites: gumtree & domain.au
You'd be able to find whole heaps of ads there posting on rooms or units for rent, I reckon this is the best you can do while you're in Malaysia.

p/s: 1 suggestion while browsing through those websites, keep a map in hand, it comes pretty handy especially when you are not familiar with the names of the suburbs.

I have send an email to them and they just say applicants will be notified if they are accepted.I guess i have no chance to stay there.

I have a rough idea where to stay.Kingsford or something is the best since it's the closest with my faculty.Randwrick is ok too.
*
If that is the case, then it's quite unlikely you will get a place there for this semester if you still haven't receive any notification from them yet.
Kingsford, Randwick and Kensington are the nearest suburbs around uni, but be prepared to pay a higher rent for rooms in these suburbs.
City area is a good alternative too if you don't mind traveling about 15-20minutes by bus to uni everyday.

Don't worry mate, I was all alone when I went to Sydney last year too, you will get to know more friends soon. AFAIK, chris, pangping, blaxed and myself are the very few in UNSW here in LYN(I'm talking about the returning students), of course the list will now expand with you and kamagotchi joining in.

I read something about getting another unipass from IT Desk, I guess it won't be the same with the password we login to enrol in myUNSW. Then, we can access our unimail. Correct me if I'm wrong.
*
Yes, you have to drop by IT Desk during o-week to get your unipass done. That would be the universal password for your myUNSW, unimail etc.

I have a question here, if I plan to go on a short trip to NZ during winter holidays, departing from Australia, do I have to apply for a visa? If yes, from whom should I submit my application to? NZ embassy in Australia or the one in KL?
FYI, I'm on a student visa in Australia and not a PR in any of the 2 countries.

i bought a jetstar ticket to go back this time..i bought a sale ticket from jetstar last year to come back..it was $250(tax included)..
kl-syd for MAS is around rm4400 return..>.<

maybe i should fly to brisbane first..then take the airasia X.. hmm.gif

Added on February 21, 2008, 1:06 am

this is a good idea!..is airasia going to add kl-syd to one of its routes?  hmm.gif
*
Wow that's a lot more expensive(about rm500 more) than what I paid in December for my MAS return. But you as a returning student, should know better that it's always good to get your tickets as early as possible.

For now, I think your best bet would be Jetstar again for one way, it may not be cheap now, but anyhow it's should still be cheaper than most of the full fare airlines given the short period of time you have right now. Or you can try asking the prices for Thai Airways, AFAIK they seem to have the cheapest air fares for KUL-SYD route among the full fares airlines, but you will need to take the KUL-BKK-SYD route, which would definitely take a lot longer.

BKK= Bangkok.
Brunei Air pricing should be comparable to Thai Air as far as I remember, but I would prefer Thai Air if I were to choose from these 2.

u should be lucky u even get 20gb. some of us dont even get that luxury. im stuck with 5gb.
alot of malaysians complain about streamyx and boast about how much they download per day ( OMG i download 30gb today. im cool shakehead.gif )
i think these ppl might not survive in australia ( capped land )
i believe most of the internet packages in australia are capped. so good luck managing your internet usage.
*
I doubt he has 20gb on his own, it's more likely 20gb shared among all his other housemates. Like someone here has mentioned, whenever "unlimited" is used in oz context, it usually means getting your speed reduced to 64kbps once you exceed the quota. However, for certain packages you don't get charged additionally for that, so technically speaking, "unlimited" is still true to a certain extent.

This is where your internet usage management skill comes in handy, what I did was to keep all my downloads on hold until the end of the billing month. When it's like a few days before billing day, just download with all the bandwidth you have left, that way your normal daily internet activities(web browsing, msn etc) during the month would not be affected.

Heh I'm on tomorrow's flight back to Sydney, meh hopefully it's not too crowded, it shouldn't be I reckon since this period is classified as non-peak under MAS calendar.

*
Do you have to sign any 12 or 24 months contract for those plans? If you do, then you are probably better off with something else. Vodafone seems to be having this promo where you get 5gb with $39, but only issue here is you have to enter a 24 months contract with them.

Just wondering, which uni are you in?

StuVac is our study leave before the final examinations. We used to have on average 1 week of StuVac previously.
I didn't realized that we don't have StuVac this year though :S

QUOTE(discoinferno1 @ Apr 1 2008, 11:55 AM)
hello,

i'm planning to transfer to rmit come july, but i'm quite vague about the cost of living in the city as the
campus is in the CBD. my estimation is around 20,000AUD$ per year which is equivalent to my course fees.
any comments on whether that is accurate or well off the figure. :/
this means i'd have to spend around 100k per year. and btw i'm studying IT ..
sigh. the cost is almost the same as
an engineering one.

can anyone give me a rough figure on the cheapest rent per week in the city or surrounding suburbs not further than 15 minutes away? and do give some examples of suburbs or road names.

can i cover the rent just by working the maximum 20 hours per week?

and what is the tax rate like there for part timers?

thanks smile.gif
*
The usual estimation for living expenses is approximately the same as what you pay for tuition fees, so AUD$20K should be more than enough to cover all your expenses including rental unless you spend a lot on entertainment, i.e clubbing, alcohol etc.

I'm not from Melbourne so I can't give any comment on the cheapest rent though.

If it's only rental, then yes you will most likely be able to cover them by working the maximum 20hours per week. But then again it all depends on how much is the rental and your wages. Typical asian employer pays around 8~10 dollars per hour, which is pretty much ripping you off. I suggest you look for fast food outlets, even though the workload sucks, the pay is nevertheless better, maccas pays about $15/hr if you are 19, goes higher if you are older than that, but that also means they are more reluctant in hiring you once you get past 19 or 20.

It doesn't matter if you are a part timer or full timer, as long as you earn below 6k per year, you'd fall under the tax-free bracket.

Do i need to buy my return air tickets to Sydney now?

I have book my tickets to go back to Malaysia during the winter break.

How is Jetstar? Is it good?Im thinking of taking Jetstar when im going back to Sydney after the semester break.
*
I took Jetstar back to KL from Syd last summer, overall it's not too bad I would say, but like what Haya just said, if you are getting the normal fares(i.e non-promo fares) back, it isn't really THAT much cheaper. Bear in mind that it is a budget airline, and thus no meals are provided, you either bring your own or purchase from them, in fact the only thing you get from them is just a bottle of mineral water, thats all. Meals would add another $30 one way on top of your fare while the entertainment set (basically a portable LCD that has movies in it) would cost about $10 extra.

Having that said, they do have promotions going on from time to time, I managed to get my ticket last time for slightly under $300 one way inclusive of tax, meals and entertainment set. The only setback was I couldn't change my flight date without incurring quite a hefty penalty+fare differences.

question : for those of you guys that have been in sydney for an extended period of time, how often it is that conductors will go onto trains to check tickets/concession passes? i've been taking the train pretty regularly (maybe once every two days since 2 months ago) but i haven't met any. i've taken the bus everyday slightly before i started taking the train tho, and out of my daily bus travel in two weeks, i've met one conductor checking us out.

just wanted to know cos when i was taking the bus i nearly got busted for using a concession ticket tongue.gif
*
I have been taking the bus for a year now but I haven't met any conductor checking us out on tickets/concession. I don't take the trains frequently(probably like once every fortnight or so), and so far I've met one conductor(or rather police officers in this case) checking us out.

Just wondering, which bus was it when you nearly got busted that time?

QUOTE(ckwei @ Apr 10 2008, 03:38 PM)
it was 37x, forgot the last number, should be between 371-374. was riding from cowper st in randwick to the city cos i was still staying at a temp place, and this was what happened :

i was a regular day, i think the sunday after mardi gras, was heading to the city when the bus stopped over to pick up some dudes along the bus lane beside the cricket grounds. right after they came up, they went 'we are from the something or other authority, please prepare your tickets/concession passes so we can have a look'. i was thinking i'm screwed since i was using a concession pass (just moved to syd and still adjusting to the transportation price which is exorbitant!), and i was right. when the conductor came to me and i showed him the ticket, he demanded to see my concession pass. i went 'do we need to have one? i'm just here on vacation' and i pulled out my uwa student card instead.

i told him i was a student in uwa, am on a holiday visiting friends and checking the universities, and will be in sydney for 5 days only. so he took my card and asked me to wait while he went on to check the others on the bus. finally when they stopped at another stop(still at the cricket grounds), a few blokes were asked to follow them down. i nearly pissed myself cos i knew the fine is gonna cost more than 100. then the dude gave me my card back, told me 'you have to have a concession pass to use this ticket' and something else which served as a warning, which i nodded in agreement and apologized while looking blur. i assume they had better things to take care of (like maybe the dudes who looked like they rode for free). so in the end i was scott free.

i moved to wolli creek only 2 days after the ordeal, and travel on the illawara line and the east-hills/airport line nearly everyday, but have never seen checks done on any trains, apart from the occassional railway officers conducting patrols(security rather than fee evasion) or some cleaners walking in the train picking up rubbish.

hence my question, do they really patrol the trains like how the check the busses?
*
That was a close call dude. IMO, they are more likely to conduct checks during off-peak hours, imagine moving around the buses/trains during peak hours, I seldom take buses off peak hours/weekends, which probably explains why I haven't encountered any, but don't take my words for it.

Anyway, to answer your question, yes they do patrol the trains like they do with buses.

No I mean how many studying hours at the University do we have(Usually)?
laugh.gif My brother asked me that so I was kind of curious to know.

Of course you and I will still have to spend time studying at home, but I don't think you need 10 hours unless if you can't solve a problem or something. Well not at my level I guess, YEAR3 or 4 maybe?
*
That actually depends on which course and year you are in. Generally speaking, engineering students have anywhere from 16 to 20+ hours per week of contact hours in uni if I'm not mistaken. Having said that, the number of credits taken in a semester doesn't really show how many contact hours you have, commerce students on the other side usually have 12 contact hours on average with 24 credits taken.

For the 10 hours thingy, it actually includes your contact hours in uni. So say if you have 4 contact hours for that particular subject, you should spend another 6 hours at home studying for that subject. However, like what chris has just said, I haven't actually seen anyone doing that yet lol, not any that I know of at least.

I'm doing commerce, so that's 12 hours in total for me, or 3 contact hours in uni per subject.
If you're asking about how many hours I spend at home, that's kinda hard to tell lol, of course I'll put more hours into it if there's a quiz in the following week or so ay smile.gif

Yeap, I'll be staying an hour away from the University.
I think, that's what my cousin told me. Have to sit train, then bus. BLUR ~~
*
Do you have to pay any rent for that place? By the look of it you'll probably be staying in the western or northern suburbs, and IMO, if you have to pay for the place, might as well get a place somewhere nearer to uni as the weekly transportation cost (bus+train) is gonna cost a bomb without concession, and no, we international students don't get concession in NSW. Of course, if you don't have to pay, that's a different story.

On a side note, assuming those people are working legally(i.e 20hours), the best job around would be in one of those supermarkets (Coles, Woolies etc), they pay $20/hr. Having said that, it's also a lot harder to get those jobs.

Oh and welcome to UNSW mate smile.gif

My cousins are at Roseville 2069. UNSW is ... 2052.
Is it far ?

Well, I'm not sure I have to pay rental or not because my dad expects me to pay. It'll be weird if I stay at my cousin's house and don't give them some incentives right?
*
Well you can't really determine the distance between two by just looking at those numbers. Did some checks with the cityrail website, Roseville is a northern suburb, takes about 30minutes to reach Central station from Roseville, and another 15-20minutes on bus from Central to uni, so the 1 hour figure given by your cousin is pretty much indeed how long it takes you to uni from their place.

I'm not too sure on which travelpass you should use, prolly either a green($43) or yellow($47) pass. This pass allows unlimited ride within a week on buses and trains within the allowed travel sections.

Yeah, I agree with you on the rental part. It'd be good if you have a discussion with your cousin and sort out how much you need to pay prior to departure, that way you'll have time to consider after putting in all other factors such as transportation costs and travel time. Anyway, that's just my suggestion.

Cheers.
