AMD just took the wraps off their ATI R680, RV620, and RV635 graphics cores. The new R680 consists of two 55-nm processor cores with CrossFireX support sharing the same specifications of the RV670 processor at the heart of their Radeon HD 3870 -- thought to be AMD's best product of the year. The RV620 and RV635 GPU cores are nearly identical to their RV610 and RV630 processors only in a new 55-nm form. Now, imagine if you will a pair of ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2 (R680) cards running in CrossFire. Or say four with CrossFireX. Feels good, right? You won't have to wait much longer as the R680 hits in January.

...it seems AMD is pushing real hard to launch it in January 2008. Apart from DX10.1, SM 4.1, PCIe 2.0 and UVD support, it also supports display port and next generation Crossfire. We learned that R680 has 320 stream processors like the R600 and supports double precision floating point. So effectively, R680 is an enhanced R600 with finer process technology and more features. CJ told us that R680 is clocked at 800Mhz+ and comes with 512MB or 1GB GDDR3 memories but we knew that R680 supports GDDR4 too. Most likely it will come with 512-bit memory interface. Along with R680, we should be seeing RV635 and RV620 replacing HD 2600 (RV630) and HD 2400 (RV610) respectively as well as HD 2950 Pro (RV670) to form a complete top to bottom line-up

Here is some leak pics of R680. There are only three main chips on board, 2*RV670XT and one PLX chip for two GPU commmuications.

All 16 memory chips (8 on the front and 8 on the back) are missing on the board. Source said the card is using 0.7ns GDDR4 memory.

Also we can notice two digital PWN power modules.

Rumours said AMD cutting R&D budget.

Hopes 3870x2 won't be the only high end card launching next year. They need more to compete with nVidia.

Do you guys agree?

Now what ATI gonna fit in between a single 680 chip & the dual 680 chip, because there are quite a gap there.

May be lower clock, handicap dual 680?

From what I read from somewhere (sorry for no source given), the card will have lower clock and only ddr3. I hopes this is not going to be truth.

the blower used by 2900series looks much more promissing compared to the 3850 cooler. but i think for X2 3870, its more enough to cool it down.
but considering the length of the card and cooler itself. does the fan strong enough to blow out the heat?? afraid its runs noisy..

This card will rule.

I'm pretty much sure that the MSRP will be 350USD (100USD below 9800GX2). Yet it's a force to be reckoned with, I might have to laugh at whoever bought 8800GTSes or even 8800GTs at super marked up prices.

That means the price will be about the same as 8800GTS 512MB, but performance will be same/better, even in AA.

*
wrong.. right now you can find 88gt and 88gts selling below their msrp...
but if the rumours are correct, the 9800gx2 will only use g92 chips..
which means that it's not next-gen yet and the r680 card will have 2 x rv670 chips..
well, from my point of view, current g80 8800 and 29xt users will not view the r680 and 9800gx2 as a very substantial upgrade..
btw, im skipping g92s, rv670, r680 for the real next gen cards -> r700 and g100 icon_idea.gif

well I've read that R700 have being delayed to 2009 if not mistaken. I guess on the ATI side, we all have to settle to HD3800 X2 hmm.gif

Just because they have silicon, doesn't mean it can't be delayed. They had R600 silicon for almost a year before it was released. And i'm not sure if this R700 is the original R700.

~1st R680 Test~

Translated Version from Google :::

Driver acceptability directly into 3870 × 2, 1024 MB memory Show

2 RV670 core frequency is 770/2250 MHz, and is exactly the same as the 3870 version

Central is a great bridge chip responsible for the allocation of bandwidth PCIE

Fever is not the whole card, loaded with time running 3 DMark06 only 60 degrees

not only that, it's 2 chips on one pcb instead of nvidia's 2 chips on 2 pcb.

the card's length is shorter than expected.

From http://www.anandtech.com/weblog/showpost.aspx?i=344

AMD had one very important demonstration at CES: the Radeon HD 3870 X2. We won't be able to bring you performance numbers from this card until the end of the month, but AMD let us snap some photos of the card. Two 3870 GPUs on a single board? That's AMD's entry into the high end market for Q1 2008.

technically HD3870 CF will beat one R680
higher mem speed and core

but R680 CF...hehehe.... just make sure ure gaming at high AA and high Reso settings to make the difference

samething with tri sli.. u need to game at insane settings.

anyways from the video above he said the price range around 400-500 usd.. thats freaking expensive.

CES 2008: Good four chip scaling

We've seen it and heard it from a few sources but it looks like two R680, Radeon 3870 X2 will score just over 20,000 in 3Dmark06.

The cards are scheduled for introduction at the end of January, but the final driver for four chips will be later in Q1.

It is quite good scaling and it looks like a great score for a non overclocked system. It will be interesting to see it performing in all games, but that is another matter all together. In most games it should be faster than Ultra, that is what we've been told.

3870 X2 lose to 9800GX2 yeah !!~~ maybe cheaper then RV680 also whistling.gif

CES 2008: Faster chips

We said this back in 2007 but let us be clear on one thing. Nvidia’s upcoming high end sandwich board, Geforce 9800 GX2 is going to end up faster than a single Radeon 3870 GX2.

This comes as no surprise as Nvidia’s single G92 is faster than a single RV670 and in the same matter a dual chip Nvidia beats ATI.

Radeon 3870 X2 will be very competition as its single chip brother was but it is still a bit slower compared to Nvidia. We still believe hat Radeon 3870 X2 will have quite good sales as it will be significantly cooler than Nvidia’s card and it will be available in massive numbers

R700 suppose to VS Nvidia GT200 which is 9800GTX smile.gif
for this i'm not so sure who will win coz Ati's R700 have 2 Gpu in one die same as Dual core CPU and for the Nvidia they are only using one single core~~ no idea who will win~ hmm.gif
unfortunately all Next gen Nvidia cards do not support DX10.1 and SM 4.1

that is 8800gtx right?
add another 2k for 3870X2 cos it's benched with q6600 at 2.4ghz.
then the result is clear :

3870x2 = 11500
8800gtx = 8046

CES 2008: Late January

Once ATI launches its dual RV670 board you can expect it to be in decent volumes. This is the plan and if ATI wanted to launch a limited number was able to do it back in December.

Samples are in good shape and hardware was finished back at December but we are still waiting for the final driver.

This is a tricky product as some games will scale really well but some including Crysis are much more unfriendly to the dual cards and ATI wants to make sure that it has the best driver possible when it launches this card. The plan is to introduce them in late January.

I just measured my motherboard layout, the R680 will hit my SATA port and cable. I guess I got to stay away with this card anymore. Very sad. sad.gif

can oc but headroom a bit only...duh doh.gif ....dont be sarcastic la,i own both before then i trade in,so i believe i know what im talking about hmmm??i even run it at cf just play around and came up to conclusion dont ever get x38 gigabyte ds5 to do cf...it will ruin your games, flickering everywhere.....
but on asus x38 mobo doesnt seem to be a problem...so maybe it a driver problem...

im not a fan boy of any brand,i just buy what the best can suit me,no need to be a fan boy and justify good product/bad product, the best things is try it yourself and experiance it...trade it with your friend or forum if itchy to try others.... brows.gif brows.gif

so far as i said it before, nvidia is faster, both card doesnt show any different IQ on vista but on the xp it totally diferent story..IQ wins on 3870...exspecially if you use modified driver like tweakforce driver,it look so much better, but then the draw back is a little bit slower if compare to 88gt even oc also wont be that good...that why i trade it out and get this 88gts,and of course i will buy this card R680 and try it out to check it for myself...frankly telling you that review always have it doubt, the best things is experiance it yourself...

MSI 8800GT: 730/1000 from 600/900 with stock cooler 100% fan speed. ~21% oc
Sapphire 3870: 950/1300 from 777/1125 pencil modded with stock cooler 80% fan speed. ~22% oc

why is it brarely visible in vista?

In-game IQ or Desktop IQ? Is it because of DirectX version?

yup my guess is bcoz of direct x 10..so both card are in par except for the speed when utilizing dx10 graphic,so no visible iQ which is sad coz,ati known for their good IQ..

Not really, ATi is still better at IQ. Ive used my new 3870 for less than a week and i already notice the change from 8800GTS. The most obvious part where Ati IQ is better is at HD movie playback, even my desktop looks very vibrant. And crysis looks a tad better, not in term of Effects, but colour vividness.

why dont you unplug the nvidia and put it into that vista rig...just try it yourself...but under xp yes i dont object that ati image produce better IQ,but then if you try playing around with nvidia ctrl panel you can imrove it a bit but still not up to the ati IQ..ati win in this department
but i myself wonder i dual boot,i try xp ok,good IQ for ati, unplug the card fix in nvidia then boot again yes can truly see the different then boot again try vista same procedure, hmmm didnt see a large diferent between ati and nvidia IQ..

GO here: http://forums.vr-zone.com/showthread.php?t=224402

EDIT: Now I'm a bit skeptical after Ezonics pointed out to me that it looks like R600. The card in the case don't have 2 heatsinks and the PCI-E power input is spread out like R600 prototype.

Its ok not that long la, still can fit in most cases...

my question is most PSU has only 1 8-pin and 1 6-pin so for me i only can use 1 of this card...
i wonder what psu is able to hold these cards in crossfire setup? any idea? what voltage? 800w minimum? hmm.gif

When you see PSU being labelled as SLI or CF compatible, you'ld know that they have more than 1 PCI-E connector. Open it up and check to be certain. If they won't let you, don't buy it from that shop. As a consumer, you have every right to check the stuff that you are about to buy with hard-earned money. It's not RM1 or 2 purchase. It's hundreds of ringgit...

These days...30" is the common monitor to be used for high end graphics card. Those cards only prove their worth when they are run at high resolution.

Is this true? 9800GX2 is just G92 8800GTS put together? It's a little bit disappointing if it's true..

Anyway, I wonder why they like Dual-chip solution so much.. I know it's cheaper this way, but the software doesn't usually support dual-chip cards unless patched. Which means, need to wait for the developers and GFX card maker to supply the drivers to play the game..

I hope it doesn't end up like 7950GX2..

Let's not get over-demanding. Crytek purposely designed Crysis to be a 100-ton King Kong. Even NVIDIA has a hard time trying to run it smoothly even though it's The Way It's Meant To Be Played. NVIDIA were the guys who gave life to Crytek originally, remember? I like the way Crytek is pushing the GPU limits...it means that we are advancing well. I hate to let it be stagnant like the consoles...I have nothing against the consoles though.

Sigh...did I even mentioned 3dmark06? I guess you are referring to the one I post. Well, as you like. Go Google some more. Find the one whereby R680 can run Crysis at "playable" frame rate at 2560x1600 while HD3870 just stutter along.

Well, the thing about Crysis is it doesn't scale too well with CF or SLI setups. If everything works right, it should get an enhancement of 70-80% over single card.

Hopefully, the developers will come out with a patch that fixes this.

As for 3DMarks, I think 3DMark03 is a better benchmark than '06. It's not bottlenecked by processor that much, unless you're running triple card configuration.

I feel that there's a compelling need to benchmark your CPU as well. In a game, the GPU will handle the graphics (shadows, AA, lighting, etc.) but the CPU handles a hell lot of stuffs as well (AI - everyone in the game and not just those you see on screen - their movement, behaviour, etc., pathfinding - everyone as well, audio - if using onboard solution, physics - w/o Ageia, mapping, etc.) CPU is just as important for 3D.

Better IQ for ATI is like, the anti-aliasing quality, anisotropic filtering quality is better than nvidia. Screenshots? i think you can find it using google where they do comparisons for image quality . I dont use ATI cards for quite some time but from my previous experience when i using ATI and Nvidia on 2 pc, i notice that ATI produce better image.

Seriously just get what you can afford....no point allowing fanboy loyalty to stop you from getting your moneys worth from a purchase. The most important stat is the price performance ratio which you can get a lot of info on the net on the new GC's.

Well you must compared the introduction price of HD3870 and 2900XT.

HD3870 is never meant to be fight with 8800Ultra, if so they would price > RM1.5k

it's 3.27 now. doh.gif

so 449 x 3.27 = 1468

add another rm200 for etc charges should be around RM1.6k here. brows.gif
if this is real, it will be a nice card in terms of performance per price ratio.

That's similar to getting 2 HD3870 and CF...Hoping this R680 can run without the need of a CF board.

We aren't surea bout it yet. Maybe it really requires a CF board since the caard itself is CF-ed in a different manner. 7950GX2 required an SLI board, although it is dual PCB...but we'll see how it turns out.

It may need the CF chip in the motherboard to actually function. I'm hoping that it does not.

yeah .. hopefully it is not..cos if really need a CF board, ppl with CF board would just rather buy another 3870 n CF it instead...the CF chip requirement will kinda defeat the purpose of glue-ing two cards together as one... same thing should be said of 9800x2 as well...

If I'm not mistaken, it's °F and not °C...but 91°F (32.8°C) seems too cold for the card. Unless it is in an aircon room and at idle.

Doesn't look impressive on that review based upon the charts but the reviewers seem to think that it is a great card. Priced at USD449? Hmm, that's almost double of HD3870. If it really is priced and performed as seen on that review, this card is a waste of money for HD38xx owners that want to upgrade...

These caught my eye...
QUOTE
The Radeon HD 3870 X2 on the bench today is a very early sample of the card and the drivers even more so. That's not to say the numbers you're about to see aren't accurate, it's just we wish we could have tested it closer to launch with proper software support.

So, it's not really an accurate benchmark...Thank GOD~! I would've been very disappointed if it was...

QUOTE
Our testing occurred in an office adjacent to one of the main railroad arteries in southern California, and it was not uncommon that the sound of the passing trains were drowned out by the X2's fan when under a full graphics load. Not exaggerating.

OMG, do we need 2 x HR03GT? Each in different mounting position?

QUOTE
Something you won't find in the specs is that this video card will work on any PCI-Express X16 capable motherboard. It was widely assumed in the early-going that the card would only work on motherboards that support CrossFire technology. In reality, however, the CrossFire option does not even become available in the Catalyst driver when using this card. All CrossFire connectivity appears to be handled internally, and the computer recognizes the X2 as a single video card.

Yes, it doesn't require CF boards. Hurrah~!

QUOTE
We received this card very shortly after AMD started sampling to board partners, and as such the driver we managed to download from the AMD ftp was an early build of what we believe wound up being Catalyst 7.12.

Again, non-optimized drivers.

the time has come for amd to push up the high end.Although high end normally gives low profit, but it shows whos the best and affects the entire range!

Ok, here's a good and trustworthy review: http://www.tomshardware.com/2008/01/23/ati...ge_fury_maxx_2/

[attachmentid=385337]
The chart above sums it up for me. At USD400+ (Tomshardware actually mentioned the price was at USD586), this card ain't worth the upgrade from my HD3870.

Why don't they have comparison with xfire HD3870.

That something that most of us would like to us.

Does Dual 3870 > xfire 3870.

i think 3870x2 should be better than 3870 CF.. it's running on single slot x16... while CF does dual slot @ x8 rite..

the truth is... 3870x2 really pown the 8800ultra.. price & performance.. it will take both...

A question here.
Wouldn't 3870X2 a better solution than 3870 crossfire?

Not all games support CF but all the games should support 3870X2 even without any patch.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Well, it's no surprise it has the same problems with CF. It is, after all, a dual-GPU solution. If you take a look at the CPU-Z, it says "Crossfire: Enabled". So, I think it's still using the same Crossfire communication between the GPUs.

There's one more advantage for 3870 X2 over CF, you don't need to buy an expensive CF-mobo to use it. Which is a huge plus considering CF-mobo is expensive.

But, I really hope DAAMIT can fix the AA performance hit. Enabling AA really hurts any ATi cards.

* Just for some information, DAAMIT is the new ATI/AMD name.

well i think if u have a mobo that supports 16x 16x cf then hd3870 cf is the way to go because its memory clockspeed is 2250mhz compared to r680's memory clockspeed of 1800mhz.. icon_idea.gif
on the other hand, if u dont have a cf capable mobo, then u're better off with r680 as it uses internal cf to utilize both rv670 gpu nod.gif

According to some website, that the latest catalyst 8.1 is unoptimised for R680. The performance between R680 and R670 CF is the same.

no the current HD3870 will pawn the HD3870X2

CF on X38 runs full PCIE2.0 16x

also the HD3870X2 depends on the games support for multi gpu..and the current HD3870X2 has a clock limit at 860 and a slower ram..

the benefits is only the 1gb of mem it has.

in chinese again doh.gif ..but anyways thanks dude for bringing all those reviews here... as for the reviews, again the result is not conclusive vs 8800 ultra... i find it very weird especially when the AA n AF is turned on in NFS:PS will cause a big drop in performance on 3870x2 but not 3870 CF ... driver issue? (i cant read chinese..so i wont noe if they mentioned it there tongue.gif )

Nice improvement for Crysis, but it's still not enough =D
What's the setting for Crysis? Ultra High or High?

Anyway, ASUS also has dual fan for 3870X2, and as usual bundled with Company of Heroes.

Most of the reviews gave positive outlook for the card but I don't think the price will justify the purchase if you're a HD3870 owner and has a CF board. Even more so if you're a 8800GT owner with SLI board.

from guru3d :
Ehm, I hear you ask "Hilbert, you persistently say RV670 but I heard this cards is manufactured under codename R680 ??". Yes, see if you take two RV670 graphics processor units, stick them on the same PCB and bridge them .. then you have a product under codename R680. R680 is simply a codename that ATI used to develop this multi-core based graphics card. So if you'd take two 512 MB HD 3870 cards and run them in Crossfire ... you'd have nearly identical performance.
Going to have to wait for very long for that version to appear. It's not easy to design heatsinks for such a card. I wonder if Thermalright will design any specifically for it. Or just slap 2 HR03GT on it?

so this time wanna see some ppl else posting performance no.
more importantly overclocking and temps..

bit worried about the temps ..
a lot of the reviews are done in middle of the coldest month in winter..

so malaysia means plus another 20C min

You do realize that the reviewers didn't put their PC out in the open, in the blistering cold, right? They use heaters at home, to raise the temperature around 25-27°C. Some Malaysians like to set their aircon to the lowest possible (around 16°C) of which, will cause the room temperature to be around 20-23°C.

Yeah, I never lived overseas. But I did go there during winter. But would you think people at Tomshardware, Anandtech, and guru3D would overlook the ambient temperature? And I don't think they don't have problems with heating. Unless you go to forums whereby individuals post their rresults, that's another matter.

Haha~! Ok ok. You make your point. I play GW with lots of people from 4 season countries and most of them use heaters in their house, so they don't really think that winter would affect their cooling. Anyway, let's put this thing aside.

That HD3870X2 is available in Lowyat. I can confirm that. Saw it and the price just blew me away. But it's really close to recommended retail price. Then again, one should only consider this after the release of better stock heatsinks or 3rd party ones from reputable manufacturers.

Well, bargaining power, pursuasion and a little bit knowledge on bulk price will help the consumers get the card at relatively lower price that is closer to recommended retail price.

hi..correct me if i am wrong

one thing unconfirm..this card supports pcie 2.0 and pcie x16..
but the bridge on the ( the bridge that connects two chips together on a PCB )card is only supports pcie x16 so even though if connect this card on a pcie2.0 board, it wont give u the benefits on pcie2.0....

read from a chinese site, if you put a pcie1.1 card on a pcie2.0 mobo, the performance will run better than the 1.1 one..
somehow rather if putting this card in a pcie2.0 mobo still can perform better than the pcie1.1..but it wont work on pcie2.0, it'd only recognized as pcie1.1

now the 3870x2 is 800/1800 or 825/1800 or 850/1800 by fan cooling..
read from fudzilla there is a water cooling coming on next week, one of those can hit over 900+/2000

source that tells this card will lose all the benefits from pcie2.0

Looks like competition from AMD/ATI is heating up. Great to see some interesting stuff happening on AMD/ATI side. I never knew Radeon 3870x2 was in development.

Generally, I like AMD/ATI Radeon cards in terms of graphics, I used to own a Radeon 9800 Pro. How is the AMD/ATI drivers these days?

After that I went for Nvidia 7 series and now Geforce 8800GT. Is this card considered high end like the Geforce 8800GTS and Geforce 8800GTX in terms of pricing? Graphic cards industry sure move too fast to follow.

pcie 2.0 spec can overclock higher

pcie sig 1.1 is not.. and will still be locked with sata/pci slots.

and its around 3-5 percent on same clocks but get higher clocks later on. slightly especially on mem.

fps increase is depending on 3 factors

Reso ure running

a pcie2.0 card installed on a pcie1.1 and pcie 2.0 mobo, i think the different is definitely more than 1~3fps performance..
but a pcie1.1 card installed on a pcie1.1 mobo and pcie2.0 mobo, this can be 1~3fps increase when u install on a pcie2 mobo..

dude the difference again is based on
the three things above..

hence

example
joker A.
with HD3850 256mb
on maximus or foxconn p35 mars..
gaming at 1440x900..
no diff..

joker B
with HD3870 512mb OCed Mems to 1250.
on same boards above
gaming at 1920x1200 ..
mainly on "FPS games" which uses a lot of MB's on ure gpu to load all that background and environment.

has up to 5 percent difference..

1-3fps??.. what game ..
3fps more in crysis means 10 percent jump..

so use percentage.

Probably take a look at this: http://www.tomshardware.com/2008/01/23/cro...ress/page5.html

While Tomshardware charts are a little bit... skeptical, but the thing is what I'm trying to pin-point is that running on a X38 board/any board with PCI-E 2.0 doesn't really give much of a performance increase.

I think I would have to rephrase that 1-3FPS performance increase is somewhat wrong, something within the point of 1%-3% increament in performance in most games is more precise. As you set, this will depend on what game but I'm simply taking the average here.

True that later on graphic cards will take the full benifit of the double bandwidth on PCI-E 2.0, but right now, not yet. Not atleast enough to warrant a purchase for a X38 mobo or 780i if you aren't doing multi-GPU setups.

nt many games support crossfire yet and the 2nd GPU will nt b used if the game does nt support crossfire/the drivers are nt up to date, check guru3d.com 3870x2 is nt compatible with world in conflict.ATI need 2 improve their drivers.88GT SLI beats the crap outa 3870x2 even in crysis.

*
correcto mundo..

oh yeah and that review is inconclusive..
they should try higher bus on rams/ ddr3 higher speeds etc...
willing to be there is a difference.

as i had said 3 factors..

no single card solution takes up that bandwidth..
i am still figuring out ..
does the latency between the two GPU of the HD3870x2 makes up for the slower GDDR3 compared to HD3870 Crossfire ..

ur rite, faster bus and faster ram needs to be used to fully optimise the dual gpu configuration, meaning the 3870x2 power nt full unleashed if use phenom platform with hypertransport3 .But they should just make 2 cores on the gpu instead of making 2 gpu on 1 card just what 3dfx did b4 with their voodoo 5 up to 4 GPU on 1 card crazy!!!!!!,resulting more heat and power consumption. The power consumption of 3870x2 almost same as 2900XT bro its super duper power hungry card and if u c in the benchmark at lower resolution 3870x2 going through cpu bottleneck, showing that the bus speed is nt enough.

Guys,

Need ur help with the X2. Recently I convert my self from Nvidia Fanboy to Ati lover. And finally after 1 year of hard working.. I am able to get myself a CNY present of Sapphire 3870 X2.

Now.. the requirement for this card is min. PSU which is 550W above. Mine one at the moment is only using Acbel 510W tru power.

I had XP and Vista all together installed on my Rig.

When I played Crysis in XP, it gives me black lines appeared on the rendering process.
But when I played Crysis in Vista it run smooth..

(Settings 1440x900 all medium no AA)

NFS Pro Street also giving another problem when running under XP it even worsen in the sense all of the sudden random blackout but the game still running.

in XP I run 3dMark .... came up with score of 11456 without AA and 10K+ with AA (this one without shutter or black lines problem).

After all of my long explanaitin, where does the problem lies? OS, PSU or immature Driver for XP?

Thanks a bunch in advance..

i would say immature drivers of X2 (and perhaps bottleneck of cpu? tongue.gif )

there is alot of issue, when gaming, screen goes blackout..

and , from my experience...about gaming at Vista n XP

gaming does better abit on Vista (faster graphic load/processing, not sure about FPS,maybe lower )

but as for 3dmark, it does better on XP (more marks)

It's more on immature driver than CPU bottleneck. The card is still new, as does the driver. The gaming experience should improved as newer driver been released.

For the time being, just make sure you can tolerate problems, and running single GPU mostly fixed some problems

That's a relief... coz if not for the CNY holiday I would either buying higher wattage PSU or even trade in back this card with 8800 GT.....

So no choice... had to wait for better drivers

Err... how to set into single GPU?

Ok, after playing X2 around for 2 weeks.....

Here's the outcome...

Windows XP.

1. With my current RIG.. (see my sig).. I managed to get 11K from 3DMark2006 with 1280x1204 no AA - using Sapphire CD installation Driver.
2. Went to ATI AMD gaming site to download the latest Driver (Catalyst 8.1)... guess what.. ..... Only managed to get 9k+ with the same setting.
3. Playing Crysis ver. 1.1 Got random black lines appeared during rendering stages
4. Playing NFS Carbon. Random shutter (blank screen) every now and then
5. Playing COD 4 ver. 1.4, No problem what so ever.. (same result with my previous 8800 GTS G90 320 mb)

Windows Vista.

1. Haven't install 3DMark yet.
2. Playing Crysis only got into acceptable playable FPS of 30+ with the setting all high 1280x1024 no AA
3. Playing COD4, nothing excell from the DX9 version of XP but see the lighting brighter and smokes are more like a real smoke should behaving
4. Playing HellGate London : much better experience compare to DX9 version.
5. Upgrading to the latest Catalyst 8.2 (clean Install), not much different when playing Crysis. Other games have not tried yet.

Overclocking (ATI Overdrive). + This cost me another 600 RM due upgrading my PSU to Acbel M8 750W just to get the 8 pin PCie socket (anyone want to buy my 2nd hand PSU Acbel iNtelligent 510W?) biggrin.gif

1. Under XP with Catalyst 8.142 Managed to get the stable overclock of CPU core 855mhz and Memory of 945Mhz.
2. Again under XP to be suprised.. it doesn't much help on 3dMark since the result is the same with the stock frequency.
3. Under Vista, Same oc'ed speed playing Crysis.. not much different feel.. still the same wif stock. Dunno if using FPS counter software could be differnet.

Conclusion.

Seems that this X2 is more Vista friendly compare to XP. whistling.gif

Sorry to hear that man, no doubt its true what you saying, because I saw it with my own eyes that they thrown used AMD sempron (seen thermal paste in the proc) for their budget packet PC. (well guess that to cover their 500 RM++ price tag for entire PC).

But I know the taiko since 2005 and bought things from him since (only him not the other kuncu2) also everytime I checked all stuff I bought in front of his eyes.

Not mean to defend Atom but just give the fair share of what I encountered as customer.

Now.. lets get back on the track abt X2...

Supposed I changed the CPU into higher spec let say AMD X2 6400 AM2 (or C2D Intel) for example would it able to improve rendering process alot or only marginally?

Ur right.... hmm.gif let say if I just upgrade to Phenom... with the almost similar price tag, I will be getting lower peformance. But if i Changed to Intel e.g. C2D Quad 6600 I had to cough another hengget for MoBo...

So we talkin abt 1.2 K here? for Intel Conversion. While Phenom just a chip upgrade will cost around less than 1K ,

IF I decided to go for Intel path. what Mobo and proc that u think the best bang out of the buck? (e.g. slowest quad core or the fastest dual core?)

Please advice since I am blind when comes to Intel proc.. icon_question.gif icon_rolleyes.gif notworthy.gif

Thats ok, I bought a Gigabyte P35 DS3L aleady. So .... now waiting for the right candidate for my Proc. Either E8400 or Q6600. biggrin.gif

Price wise, not much diff As i can get the Q6600 around 900 and E8400 around 700++ RM Which one do you guys think more better for today's Apps and Games?

PS : I have found a suitable buyer for my AMD Proc and Mobo rclxms.gif

more & more games and applications are optimized to use 4 cores within a year or more wink.gif
games = dual core
applications = quad core

if you wan to have high frame rates in games now or maybe until 2009 go for E8400 and OC till 4Ghz above~~
reviews already proved that quad cores still loses to dual core in terms of gaming.

if you wan to edit photos, videos, folding etc etc base applications then you should go for quad cores because these applications now are utilizing all 4 cores laugh.gif

anyway the choice is in your own hand nod.gif

i say E8400 is more worth it than Q6600. u can OC 4ghz easily with E8400. thats 4 100% gaming. if u do a lot of adobe editing n other applications, then quad 6600 is 4 u.

I juz know that E8400 (dual core) is better than Q6600 (quad core) in gaming.
What cpu cooler u use to 100% overclock the E8400.

At the moment trying push to 4.40 Ghz.... so far no luck. Eventhough already put the vcore up to 1.5V

Able to boot into windows but failed run prima95 or orhtos with both core.

Any suggestion? Still same temp load is around 65C and idle 42C

I would have no idea,

Can be a lot of factors.

1. Proc problem not a good batch
2. El cheapo GPU not the uber XFS or Zotac but mere Sapphire. =not a good build
3. Cap ayam RAM, Corsair XMS2 is not as good as DHX or some progressive timing memory with CL less than 4.
4. Using a cheap heatsink..... not using Uber watercooling.. or even a Nitrogen = temp problem
5. No aircond at room that gives a near boiling point ambient temp.
6. Using a P35 Chipset not the Uber X38.

Well thats what I can think of, no other.. but I am satisfied since this is a huge leap forward from my previous AMD rig.

when i went to 8800gtx.. awesome

when i used 8800 ultra even more awesome

then sold them off with the anticipation of the 8800gt price/performance ratio freaking gila..

straight sold off all the g80 gts i had.. and made second rig slied with 8800gt

then since i was on maximus and was fedup with all the 680 except for the asus p5n32esli..
tried HD3870 crossfire.. awesome..

then temporarily went back to 8800gts G92 was in a trying mood... . biggest mistake..
hence what happened to me when i had that card, the very next day just packed it back and 3rd day posted sales thread

gaming ure card is good
but other things just pissed me off
dual screen support goes nuts especially when u want to play video on the second monitor
dont even talk about hdtv.. if u enable hdtv on ure second monitor say like mine 24 inch dualie.. so second i made it hdtv.. u can see framerate freaking slow when u play high def movies..
tested with naruto 1920x1200 encoding movie 2.. lousy...and some hd movie downloads

but gaming was good.. but price wise waste of money for a mediocre gain compared to 8800gt.only pros is he cooling

so base on this is what i can tell u.. everybody's expectation for buying a graphic card is different.. and what they expect from it is different.
this is the best i can tell u.

i cannot argue on 8800gt price/ performance .. its just that a good card
for hd3870 .. the price/performance/feature .. is something legendary

so depends where ure expectation meets..
for me daily 2-3 hours surfing while watching movie gaming 2 hours..
i need something that can do both exceptionally well.
the 8800gts G92 didnt fit to my criteria.

so thats y u see sometimes ppl selling off 8800gt to move to hd3870 and vice versa.. its whether they got what they were looking for
