Looking for options for a new budget 5g modem as my VN007+ is facing a weird problem
Previously I was using it at 4G only area, and manage to reach 50-80Mbps download on U Home 5G
Now I’ve transferred to a city with 5G coverage, but only manage to average 30-50Mbps download and upload on speedtest.
I know it’s not the sim problem because using the same card with Olax MF650 gets me minimum 250Mbps download on speedtest as well.
And a weird thing is after i perform factory reset on the VN007+, the speedtest can reach 270Mbps, but only for about 5 minutes  doh.gif
In the meantime using my UHome 5G with the MF650

Currently looking at Nokia Fastmile 3 (saw it listed as under 500 recently on shopee)
And NX200

Any suggestion on which to use?
Hi. Do you know what chipset does the nx200 use?
Currently using Olax MF650, pretty happy with its battery life and speed. Size is also very portable and lightweight
Only disadvantage I can think of is that the battery is not easily replaceable

didn't state but should be mediatek t750, if u have doubt then take x50-5g, it uses snapdragon x62.
rule of thumb: if didn't clearly state the modem chipset, always treat it as unisoc chipset based, because if just write "chipset: mediatek", it can be using unisoc modem + mediatek cpu/wifi.

It's already connected to 28/78, but still gives the handicapped speed. Unfortunately VN007+ doesn't have band lock function

you need superadmin login then can open band lock options include imei change.

yeah, hence I've been looking at Nokia Fastmile 3, seems like best bang-for-the-buck option currently

Current best 5G routers you could easily get from taobao/aliexpress are:
1. FiberHome 5G CPE Pro LG6851F
2. ZTE G5 PRO MC8512

both are Mediatek T830 platform based.

Currently using TPLink Deco X50 5G with YES simcard. First week was good, can get 400mbps inside house. Recently drop to 4G and sometimes no connection. Not sure whether its the simcard problem or the router problem. rclxub.gif

Anyone using 5G broadband in a condo? Any recommendations for a modem with decent connection strength? What about external antennas? Any success using them to boost the signal enough for a good connection?

Currently staying at around the equivalent to the 18th-20th floor (condo is on elevated ground/hill). Getting decent 5G reception (5/5bars; ~100++ - 200++mbps) via a Zyxel NR5103E and its internal antennas.

When using the same SIM (Yes 5G) on my phone, its only able to get 4G so the modem is likely doing the heavylifting. The phone's own Maxis sim is able to get a 5G connection though at lower speeds (~50mbps - below 100mbps) vs 300-500+mbps at ground level.

So in addition to the relatively high floor, there is also the problem with Yes 5G's poorer connection.. Was thinking of adding the antennas since the NR5103E supports it and it would be more cost effective than getting another 5G modem.

For condo if you staying high floors, 5G is almost guaranteed to be weak. That's because the antenna used by telcos are usually pointing slightly downwards.

You can use an antenna but you need to point it right and usually need to install it outdoor.

And no matter what you do, just remember that 5G is still wireless and it can never be as stable and consistent as fiber.

Does it work well?

My experience with China antenna many years ago is they pump out a ton of fake antenans sweat.gif

Some will make it worst, some not doing anything at all, good ones are hard to find cause this thing is somewhat not legal to be sold to end user (grey area)

i have no idea.

but for sure those extremely cheapo antennas are not better than the built in 1.

if one wants to have safe bet, then slowly search for those branded antennas like huawei, zte, h3c.

again, 4G or 5G modem router are very sensitive to the placement, even few cm apart. here i share again my trick to find a better rough spot for placement before fine tune.

QUOTE(BOTAK_WAI @ Dec 4 2024, 07:16 PM)
wanna share 1 trick for u guys to locate best spot to place your 5G modem router.

take a samsung 5G phone and dial *#0011#

then select your 5G sim (sim1 / sim2)

then place your phone on the spot you want to put the 5G modem router.

check and see which spot has the best RSRP signal. (-80 is stronger than -90)

SINR higher is better. (5 is higher than -5)

normally the corner of the wall near window has better signal.

oh ya, those big boys 5G modem router like nokia fastmile even have few variants to cater different region with different optimization in antenna for specified frequency.

it's written in the modem router user manual.

so don't be surprised when u see there are vodafone telco variant zte mc888 ultra that's using snapdragon x62 optimized for uk sub-6ghz band and also other variant zte mc888a ultra that's using snapdragon x65 optimized for mmwave for us market.

for typical condo like this, i recommend to put the 5G modem router (turn off the built-in wifi) on "A" spot and put a strong wifi router like ax73 or tuf-ax4200 (put in access point mode) on "B" spot, and connect both with cat6 lan cable.

this is just an idea, you gotta find your best spot for best signal. usually good spot for 5g signal not good for wifi signal coverage and vice versa.

End up getting tp link x50-5g instead of nokia fastmile 3, because reading through the thread some commenters mentioned nokia is unable to lock bands 😅
Plus with the lazada birthday sale discount the price is acceptable to me
And also there's warranty and it being Msia set - more peace of mind
