Hi Guys,
Just received a call from TM stating they will come over to upgrade my 800Mbps to 1Gbps.

Having read some of the comments here, I have a few questions which I hope you guys can help with:
(1) Is there stability issue (read intermittent speed reduce) with the new 1Gbps router?
(2) Can I re-use the existing Huawei BTU? I understand the speed might be down to about 940Mbps, but I am ok with that as long as it's more stable.
(3) I am currently using my own router (Mikrotik Hex and Asus XT8 for wifi). Should the TM provided ONU is stable at 1Gbps, which router is recommended to support 1Gbps throughout my home network?

Thanks.
*
Tell the technician you want to continue using your current ONU.
XT8 is better than the Hex. The performance of the Hex is lousy.

TM has every intention to push the backdoor-ed D-Link. Nobody should use it. If you have it in your network, make effort to remove it.
It has a kill-switch to lock you out of the device.
It has AliOS Things which phone home and came bundled with a slew of security vulberabilities.

AliOS (formally YunOS) had a history of helping big brother censor user. From Wikipedia:
"In November 2015, following Chinese State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television's policy, dozens of third-party applications installed by users on their own YunOS set-top boxes were automatically removed and blocked from re-installation."

SOS in Chinese:
广电总局再发大招 七成电视盒子被"阉割"
http://news.chengdu.cn/2015/1117/1742612.shtml

As an additional benefit to TM, the automatic speed downgrade of the D-Link allows TM to continue selling bandwidth they don't have.

It seems all unifi plans now come with combo unit and not standalone unit. This is considered dangerous for common users who dont have any networking knowledge and potential danger they are facing especially with those assigned with public IP for 500Mbps users and above.

Also, best alternatives if you want to own your router regardless any plan, maxis (additional charges for public IP regardless any plans) and celcomdigi (private IP). AFAIK, maxis is supplying skyworth modem with 2.5GbE port for their 2Gbps users. Not sure for their 1G users thou.

Imagine if those not very tech savvy people who never turn off their combo modem. they would be using 1gbps plan with ~100-300mbps speed. That's why often they would say i paid for such and such but slow internet.

The AliOS Things service don't need public IP to phone home. It connect back as part of the boot process instead of listening to a port.
In the news source, Skyworth is implicated as well so I don't trust them either.

The question:
Is Huawei or ZTE that expensive? They are making ONU for the whole world. If they really plant malware in their device, rest assure all those cyber security company from the West will be writing about it. They have been writing about a bunch of router / firewall implants.

What is the true reason for moving to some custom, unknown brand?
D-Link is not known to make ONU but Huawei and ZTE is.
Who wanted the D-Link backdoor-ed? TM? Government?

Based on my testing, 300Mbps plan is the sweet spot. You actually get this speed most of the day.
Anything higher is only good for Ookla speedtest, that's why it is purely dick measurements. TM is selling you bandwidth they do not have and cheating speedtest.

Anyone not needing high upload speed should save money by downgrading.

This is so true. Heck I am surviving good with 100mbps sharing with 2 other family members. Running 1 laptop +1 tv and few phones.
Of course 300mbps would be better, but beyond that I'm just paying for extra that I don't fully utilise. If really need faster download then switch to use 5g hotspot for a while.
ISP give free upgrade to show off and please minister, so they can avoid reducing price,

I still wonder who is actually the OEM behind this so called "D-Link" ONR
Cause the design of it, really makes it feel like a generic product and not a D-Link product

remember the "AZ-TECH" DS244WSGV?

it was a generic router with a local company "AZ-TECH" brand throw onto it , not to be confused with Aztech of the past from Singapore
It was also a horrible router and quickly swept away and replaced by wifi6 stuff

Cha, I know that. There are some basic tweaks that users with public IP can do to protect their IoT and other smart devices, this includes computers, laptop, and other portable devices that uses home-wifi internet access. Personally, when I used the black D-Link 2.5GbE ONR before before selling it, I disable almost all unwanted features thou I am behind CGNAT.

With D-Link's reputation dropping like birds shit, I dont trust the brand at all. Deswai I am maintaining my current subscription plan without upgrading. I used 800Mbps before and eligible for FSU to 1Gbps. But, opt to take the rahmah plan instead since I dont utilize much internet speed these days. As long as I can do my job is okay and at the same time I pay for the actual speed I use without wasting my unused bandwidth and money on paying for unused bandwidth.

Idk how they designed such incompetence system. I just saved the account ID and paying monthly via autopay. Never bother to check their apps or website. Waste of time and energy bro.

Edit:
I can login to unifi account info.

Good call. Even if you paid for higher speed and test with your expensive Oracle Cloud or AWS instance you won't get full speed except the time when most people are asleep. On the other hand, Ookla speedtest will always get more than max speed even when the network is broken like 18 August.

I don't quite get the reason why D-Link want to help them with such a low volume product. It's only for 1 and 2 Gbps customers. I am sure D-Link get some OEM to do the work since they don't have a PON portfolio, except some dodgy ONR for the Russian market but at least that one is listed on their .ru site. This TM ONR is not listed anywhere.

I dont fancy with high speed these days, I prefer I pay for what I use. Thou the download time may take some time, I can use the time for other productivity things. So, an internet is an internet, doesn't matter its 1mbps or 2gbps. As long as you can access, good already.

Not in a hurry but eventually by year end need to login to download the statement for tax relief

On autopay, I will never subscribe again

Once I was charged RM2,000 because they made a mistake in the bill (wrong unifi tv plan given and they removed and add correct plan) so it triggered 'early termination' fees

I can tell you it was a nightmare asking them to issue a chargeback to my credit card doh.gif

Anyway in the midst of chatting with Live Chat and here we go again... ask to clear cache doh.gif

D-Link RU is almost like a seperate team

I had a DAP-1360 repeater
for global, that's all it does, just a repeater

but RU firmware? it is a fully featured router

not sure why did they lock that behind RU and I didn't try to cross flash

Can I check with the experts here on the speed upgrade?

I am on landed fibre and I am thinking of switching over to Unifi 300mbps from Sunway internet.

1. Is it still true that Unifi 300mbps will have higher "priority" for bandwidth over 100mpbs users?
2. Will the latency on 300mbps better than on 100mpbs?
3. Some users reported their speed gets upgraded recently. This is applicable for new subscribers too?

Currently I am using 100mbps the only complain I have is during peak time from 8pm to 11pm internet not very smooth.

The only 'priorities' for higher speed

1. Guaranteed public IP for 500Mbps (for now)
2. 1Gbps and above they have a guaranteed shorter restoration time for any reported outage

A lot of these TW / CN companies did a lot of weird thing. There was a time when TP-Link have a modern UI for certain region while the rest gets a classic UI. I suspect they are all just middleman and depending on what they sourced, just slap on some customization and sell it.

I suggest you stick to the cheapest offer you can get, from whichever provider.

1. Don't know.
2. Don't know but don't think so.
3. No speed upgrade for new subscriber

TM do get heavy congestion during the evening as well. If this is your only concern, don't bother. Unless TM is cheaper than your current provider.

I used e-wallet autopay. So on the 6th day of new month, I will cash in the right amount i used to pay for the internet. It will deduct accordingly. Never used bank's autopay.

TP-LINK CN is also like a completely different team and products compared to global
then there's their subbrand, Mercusys

some of them literally have modern TP-Link UI with a red color theme instead
while some have ancient 2014 ui
