3850 is ~90% of a HD2900XT, which is 105-110% of a 8800GTS (excluding AA)
Plus, 256MB of RAM = no go.

However, the Powercolor OCed 3850 512MB definitely beats a GTS (99% of a 2900XT, and AA is a bit better in some cases)

is that 1 available in msia yet?

So, yet the 8800GT still p@wn this HD3870 in single-card battle smile.gif. I wonder if the new 8800GTS will be a better pick than 8800GT. Yeah, the additional top-up price might not value for just a few fps+, but the noise and temp lower than 8800GT as well hmm.gif

HIS not releasing IceQ Turbo version for this HD3870? unsure.gif

With the RM200~300 saved, you can easily purchase a 3rd party cooler, which would pretty much solve your problems.

8800GT + 3rd party cooler = more or less 8800GTS price (since GTS model already has better cooler with bonus + few fps rate)... not much different I suppose? sweat.gif

I wonder how HIS will representing their Turbo version of HD3870 brows.gif

Hehe, if u r amatuer... then I'm noobie sweat.gif. Thanks for injecting some info and ur view anyway biggrin.gif
I do read the same thing as well... but if the differ really ain't that significant, I may opt for HD3870 which offer lesser heat and power consumption. Nowdays games optimized for Nvidia's, nothing weird if their FPS and score higher than ATi's in benchies sweat.gif

found a chart of power consumption between 3870/CF & 88ooGT/SLi

ati using lesser power cLick

3850 does not beat the old 8800gts right?
*
Your're comparing a 3850 with a 1000 buck card? 8800GTS has 320bit memory pipeline! Of course it wont outperform a 8800GTS...different category...But it clearly outperforms a 8600GTS which is around the same price range...

At the same price range...nothing by NVIDIA beats the 3850...8800GT is about 300 bucks more expensive...

Depends on what type of 1950 you are talking about...HD3850 does beat a 1950pro...XT not very sure...

take a look at this benchy:
http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/amd_rv...eview/page5.asp

Okay Confirmed a HD3850 performs better than even a X1950XTX:
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3151&p=9

Whether this increase of performance warrants an upgrade from a 1950XTX is up to your personal opinion and whether you'll be going the DX10 route anytime soon...

If you can afford the HD3870 then go for it...It can handle higher resolution better than the HD3850.

Well...if you can afford a better card than i would say always go for the better card...As for future proofing it...well you know we all cant predict the future...

The life span of a particular technology depends on the consumers tolerance levels(lower details) and the extent of exponential improvement of technology...like this year is perhaps one of the biggest leaps in graphic card technology(software and hardware)..My 7600GS lasted(for me) for only a year compared to the famous Riva TNT2 in the past which lasted longer for me...

Go for the 3870...it will serve you well..just make sure you have the requirement for it okay? Its a dual slot solution make sure got space in your PC...

Take a look HERE.

HD3850 can be overclocked from 670 MHz to 776 MHz for the RV670 (+16%) and from 833 MHz to 1050 MHz for the GDDR3 (+26%).

HD3870 can only be overclocked from at 775 MHz to 839 MHz for the RV670 (+8%) and from 1125 MHz to 1270 Mhz for the GDDR4 (+13%). The GDDR4 was certified to run at 1200 MHz in the first place.

So...which card has the best bang for the buck? Up to you to decide. HD3870 is roughly RM150-RM200 more expensive.

Added on December 2, 2007, 9:27 pmOh, and in case you are even tighter on budget, here is something to look forward to.

I'm not sure that is on stock cooling. The article from Tom's Hardware shows overclocking with stock cooling. If you are going to spend RM100-300 for additional cooling, might as well spend the money on a better card like the 8800GT or 8800GTS 512MB or something. You may also achieve higher overcloking results with the HD3850 using the cooling that you are using, assuming that you are not using stock cooling.
