Hi, Just bought my laptop and was wondering what's the max capacity of the M.2, slots. But I read somewhere online that there is no limits for M.2 slots?
i dont think so.. and currently the max consumer wide availability is 2TB
the sweet spot is 500GB (ard RM300_+)
so if you plan to insert between 500GB-1TB ; 99% no issue.. especially on new laptops

some laptop have 2 slot for M.2 (max at most) no limits as u mention it might be for storage - subjected to max capacity available for each m.2 (2tb so far biggest). M.2 can be sata or NVMe interface. and for Nvme it comes with 3 different length 2240, 2260 and 2280... Lenovo for example, they use 2242 + 2280 (extra slot - depends with model and product range)

Mine comes with 2 M2 slots, it comes with 512GB. Length should be 2280. Longer length has better heat dispersion right?
Samsung 970 Evo plus and Samsung 980 what's the difference? I see the read and write speed seems to be same but price quite different. M.2 PCIE3.0
samsung 980 is their latest ssd but it's dramless compared to 970 evo plus which still includes dram cache. they claim the 980 uses system memory as cache instead.

Wow I see...hmm there's so much of difference in price from Samsung 980 and 970 Evo Plus, is it really worth that much for the DRAM

IMO 970 evo plus is kinda outdated, for similar prices you can get pcie gen4 drives that are way better like the wd sn850, or if you're currently limited to a budget and dont have gen4 motherboard, the pny cs3040 1tb costs about RM700 and is an actual gen4 drive, and you'll be capped if using gen3 slots.
i've bought her stuffs actually, but it's just that i told her about my disappointment with the MTE220S cause i paid more for it than the CS3040, and she said she'll pay for it instead. that's probably why she got tilted since it was just a month ago or lesser
Capacity and price you bought? Using for OS? Any problem so far?

if you mean the MTE220S, i bought 2tb for rm1200
this is just my data drive, but im glad to say that performance wise, it's doing real good, though i'd recommend getting heatsink for it since it can get real hot
here's the cdm benchmark that i took before on default settings
and here's cdm benchmark that i just took on nvme settings

Does it matter if the SSD is Gen3 or Gen4? old laptop with M2 slot will be compatible ?

as far as i know.. old laptop that have m2 slot is mostly m2 sata.. not nvme... ssd gen3 and gen4 does matter as the speed it offer also different... but it subjected to motherboard capability. if mobo only support gen3.. u still can use gen4 m2, but the speed will be cap..
do you think upgrading NVME Gen 3 to Gen 4 has any impact in booting windows or gaming?
Read Speed: 3k Mbps --> 7k Mbps?
specifically SX8200Pro to CS3040
gen 3 and gen 4 generally have the same loading time for windows. for games hard to notice......just a small differences... hard to notice few videos in youtube..

looks like 0.1sec difference... not worth upgrading it then..
Depends on your laptop model Some laptop M.2 slot only supports SATA Some laptop M.2 slot only supports NVMe Some laptop M.2 slot supports both SATA & NVMe

Just like the youtube video, very small difference. The streams of data still need to be processed first before it completed boot or start game. Windows is only about 4GB of data to read. Data for game need to be processed first. I think when DirectStorage became available only can see the benefit of Gen4.

Direct storage is only for gaming, for win11 they didnt announce anything new to bootup windows. maybe is possible that in the future, direct storage will also work with sata ssd and pcie 3? Then all gen of IO can also benefit by that.

maybe.. maybe not... or there will be newer architecture with better protocol that allow directstorage to be more utilized.. hard to say... too many things that evolve, hard to catchup all at one time
