Direct storage is only for gaming, for win11 they didnt announce anything new to bootup windows.
maybe is possible that in the future, direct storage will also work with sata ssd and pcie 3?
Then all gen of IO can also benefit by that.

maybe.. maybe not... or there will be newer architecture with better protocol that allow directstorage to be more utilized.. hard to say...
too many things that evolve, hard to catchup all at one time  sweat.gif

After playing few round of games ; HWinfo shows the read speed MAX is only 350MB/s ; while in Disk Benchmark shows SX8200Pro can get 3000MB/s

Looks ; it only use 10% of throughput to load windows & games

Guys i ran a benchmark on my laptop SSD, which is a 512GB micron MTFDHBA512TDV-1AZ1AABHA.

Seems to be way off with what I've searched

Is this normal? What do you guys think about this speed?

feels like either it's running at x2 speed instead of x4, or it's thermal throttling

I don't think its thermal throttling as I am not doing anything while running the tests.

Check the spec if that port support up to x4 or only x2.
Check at BIOS if can set to Gen 3 x4.

those who on NVME...

apart from Disk Benchmark.. do you get full speed when loading windows or playing games?

I noticed when load windows & play games ; i only get MAX 300MB/s read speed...
When Benchmark I can get 3000MB/s

So definitely its not an issue with settings/throttle etc

Btw I'm using HWiNFO to monitor the read speed

no. you should know that those benchmark numbers are based on a set of controlled scenarios, meant for comparison purposes.

in real world usage, especially for home/office/gaming, which consists of random 4k read/write, and involve mainly small files, the speed (in MBps) will not reach its peak in these operations. even if you compared the same between good sata and nvme ssd, differences are not really significant.

hehe it really depends on what's the ssd is for, and choices based on current price-performance also.

for instance, for professional work purposes, you can make better use of these high-speed drives. also, for similar price range, you might also choose to get the ones with higher specs.

e.g., based on current pricelist from viewnet:
- kingston kc600, sata3, 2tb - 999myr;
- transcend mte220s, pci-e gen3 nvme, 2tb - 999myr

which one do you pick up? biggrin.gif

Gen 4 only benefits if the workload takes advantage of the increased in speed. For the majority of normal users, Gen 3 drives will suffice. Even a hardware enthusiast will be well serviced with the earlier Gen 4 drives speeds of 5k+. Those current new Gen 4 with speeds of 7k ++ are pointless for most users. Only for benching they look great and for bragging rights. Plus there's a significant drop in endurance level from the earlier Gen 4 drives.

Yes possible. But if you have not done a fresh install for many years, this could be the time you do it.
