guys, i'm looking to add 1tb nvme and i'll be using ugreen's nvme to pcie x4 adapter. so far I've looked on sn750, 970 evo and samsung 980 and tbh all the reviews is getting me a little mixed up

i'm going to be using it to store games so i guess they all would work fine, but among the 3, would it be safe to say that the 970 evo or sn750, even though dated, would still be a better overall performer compared to the 980 due to the dramless nature of the 980?

then get the evo 970 if u willing to pay more than 980.

no need too much worry of dramless 980 because this dramless nvme utilize HMB tech to use your system ram.

what 980 better than 970 evo is the power efficiency so it will run cooler.
*
thanks for assuring about the dram. given the price point for the 970 evo is the same as the 980, would you suggest going for the 970 evo then? 970 evo plus is rm900+ but the 970 evo itself is basically same price as the 980

just get the 970 evo…if you concern about temp for long period of data transfer, then use adapter with fan.

https://s.lazada.com.my/s.dR7PY

if for laptop use 980 would be more suitable

nice, i already ordered the ugreen one so i'll use that for now. thanks again for your recommendation rclxm9.gif

hi guys,

can anyone recommend a 2tb m.2 form factor drive mainly for data storage? I saw the NV1 and it seems cheap at around RM938 but the tbw seems pretty low. is there any better performer for around the 1k price range? also not sure if it's still relevant, but i'll likely torrent files to the same drive as well though i don't torrent often

Transcend MTE220S 2TB at RM999 from viewnet.

http://viewnet.com.my/downloads/viewnet_diy_pricelist.pdf

Not recommended to run torrent on SSD. They don't like heavy writes. It also kills TBW warranty.
*
WOW this one has 4400TBW for 2TB! even more than all of the nvme's i've seen. yea i'd be torrenting maybe once every 2 months or so, so it's really uncommon. i'm more worried of data integrity biggrin.gif

Got myself a 2TB XLR8 CS3040 a few days back. Cost around RM996 after some 8.8 discount. Not much of gen4 speed but still better than gen3. Also the price difference.
*
how's the performance? what's the warranty also for it?

Pretty decent at over 5.5k read and up to 4.3k write range with 5 years of warranty
*
dem that's pretty good, and the price as well drool.gif

i have not received my mte220s that i paid 1.2k for, maybe i can reject the delivery and pick up this cs3040 instead biggrin.gif

Here are the TBW ratings:

500GB XLR8 CS3040: 850 TBW
1TB XLR8 CS3040: 1800 TBW
2TB XLR8 CS3040: 3600 TBW
*
yup that's pretty good. the mte220s is rated a 4400 TBW for 2tb but the speeds arent that great and it cost more cry.gif

motherboard is still gen3 regardless but the cs3040 should be able to max out as well hmm. seriously considering to reject the delivery today biggrin.gif

Ended up accepting the package for the MTE220S 2tb. To be honest I was kinda surprised by the write speed since it was more than the advertised speed for 2TB model in the website

USB2 is the connection, what do you expect? It's not the ssd issue, it's PEBKAC issue.
Even the USB3 is considered slow without UASP enabled.

There are no magic can make it faster, usb2 is the bottleneck.

Sss wear and tear is inevitable.
My 960evo is about 22tb tbw now, I store large downloads in separate disk. Cheap ssd with tlc or. Penta level cell means lower durability.
Just don't put anything important in ssd, that's all, cloud and ext hdd exists for a reason.
*
every time ssd lifespan comes into discussion, i always see the keyword "don't put anything important in ssd", this kind of implies that ssds are not a safe place to store your data but isn't the same can be said to hdd?

If you store extra copies elsewhere, then it's fine,
SSD drive has limited write cycle, badly configured, dram-less, tlc, small capacity will reduce the endurance.

I've seen too much people in tech support asking for data recovery. Cloud service and external hard drives are much more cheaper than data recovery, most people don't bother until thier drives cannot be accessed.
*
basically if you get decent ssd's and get one with high endurance, you're kinda safe to go yea? I have encountered this in the past where I had BSOD on my plextor SSD (made in 2013) and upon reboot, some system files were permanently missing and this was one of the downside of SSD's back then. Are they still the same to this day with modern SSD's?

QUOTE(sHawTY @ Aug 23 2021, 10:39 AM)
SSD is much more reliable than HDD but you still shouldn't store your important data in just 1 place. Should always have backup
*
yup it goes without saying having multiple backup is good, and cloud backup is real handy and actually cheap if you only store key important files

Had many ssd in my system, the only one still stay is 960 Evo.
Reputable brand like Sammy can update firmware easily, driver provided, come with free software.

22 tbw after several years of usage I'd say it's pretty good for money.
For the sake of stability, only use the connector directly from psu, and a good psu is important too.
*
yeah that was on an older system and it was an older ssd

i've had 26tbw on my 250gb 960 evo since 2017 and have never encountered that issue as well so i was thinking maybe that affected older drives when there werent much tech put into it

with lazada bonus RM9 for every 99, it seems that I can now get the CS3040 2TB for RM884 rclxm9.gif

are there any known reliability issues with the E16 controller that this drive uses?

Something very fishy though. Those with local manufacturers warranty is like RM16xx.
Those with local supplier warranty go from rm12xx to rm9xx for 2 TB.
*
it was from PCByte, so they're pretty reputable, though it is an oddity that they could provide 2TB + 3600TBW + Gen4 for the price of sub 1k.

But I've actually cancelled my order cause wife was clearly unhappy with the purchase as she said I already bought too many NVMe's recently cry.gif

I went with 32GB RAM instead biggrin.gif

hi, i have some qs.. thinking purchasing lenovo laptop. realized the storage is slightly different description.

512GB SSD M.2 2242 NVMe TLC
512GB SSD M.2 2242 PCIe 3.0x4 NVMe

Could not find info on comparing Nvme TLC vs PCIe Nvme. is the below nvme is MLC type? potentially? hmm.gif
*
If the price difference is huge, then possibly. But I'm gonna guess they're both TLC which most are these days.

This is probably the biggest stumbling block those of us who are married face when it comes to buying SSDs (or any other hardware). So made sure to get something for her as well.
i've bought her stuffs actually, but it's just that i told her about my disappointment with the MTE220S cause i paid more for it than the CS3040, and she said she'll pay for it instead. that's probably why she got tilted since it was just a month ago or lesser tongue.gif

Samsung 970 Evo plus and Samsung 980 what's the difference? I see the read and write speed seems to be same but price quite different. M.2 PCIE3.0
*
samsung 980 is their latest ssd but it's dramless compared to 970 evo plus which still includes dram cache. they claim the 980 uses system memory as cache instead.

Wow I see...hmm there's so much of difference in price from Samsung 980 and 970 Evo Plus, is it really worth that much for the DRAM
*
IMO 970 evo plus is kinda outdated, for similar prices you can get pcie gen4 drives that are way better like the wd sn850, or if you're currently limited to a budget and dont have gen4 motherboard, the pny cs3040 1tb costs about RM700 and is an actual gen4 drive, and you'll be capped if using gen3 slots.

if you mean the MTE220S, i bought 2tb for rm1200

this is just my data drive, but im glad to say that performance wise, it's doing real good, though i'd recommend getting heatsink for it since it can get real hot

here's the cdm benchmark that i took before on default settings
