most STB box, like unifi tv, astro all running with standby/wake up when u press on/off button on remote. because the power consumption maybe to small and faster to show the display.

I know this, is another person sonypshomer confuse on this.

sonypshomer go deep inside the system and choose power off and assume later can power on back by remote control. This definitely cannot because it is totally turn of the devices. When using remote to power off, it actually send standby signal to the device ask for sleep instead of completely turn off the device.

I know sonypshomer confuse the differences of actual power off and power off by remote because sonypshomer said later can turn back the Apple TV after "power off" from Apple TV Remote. This can because it is "power off" to standby mode not completely turn off the device.

Actually, most devices incl tv, avr, boxes come power on/off button on remote for standby... consumes very low power.

Then, there are some devices that have a sub option... u can choose 2 types of standby... one for normal, one for quick startup.
Obviously, quick start means it has not powered down much, consumes more standby power.

Lastly, u can unplug or switch off at power panel.

Your mibox... cannot put on any kind of standby... can only unplug, am i right? Now, that is not standard.

I know all those. Standard is standby not totally power off.

My Mi Box can Standby. It is very standard.

I just point out why he purposely go deep inside the Nvidia Shield system to total power off it instead of power button at remote to "power off" it which is actually standby it.

Ok, then i think the issue is...

Some people regard standby, red light, very low power used, as power off.

Some people regard no light, total shut down as power off.

Diff is.... maybe 0.1 watt, maybe cost 20 sen amonth.

A waste of time discussing this trivial matter.

On all Shield remote there is no 'power' button but there is shortcut to power menu by long press 'back' button and it will show power option to 'sleep or restart'. The shortcut was removed on latest update(SE 7.0.X) but
it will be back in future update(SE 7.1)

To power off shield:-
On Shield 2015/2017, user need to go to 'setting>about>power off'
On Shield 2015, user have another option where there is power button on Shield device to 'wake/sleep/shutdown'

btw, sleep/standby on Shield will only cut off hdmi signal/output. laugh.gif

You should thanks Nvidia Shield give you power off function.

They is no power off function in my 2 TV Box - Mi Box and Apple TV 4K.

Wonder whose idea TV Box should be always on and in standby mode when not watching.
I prefer power off when not using, what for standby it.

I never let any of my Electrical devices in standby mode (except fridge), I always off it when not using.
*
QUOTE(Andrewtst @ Sep 3 2018, 11:46 AM)
Because you choose Power Off. When Power off it is totally turn off the device where impossible the remote can turn it on.
That the reason you need to go unplug the cable (where you from, why need unplug, I know certain country don't have on off switch button in power plug but definitely not in Malaysia). In Malaysia we just need to turn off the power plug switch.

If you choose standby then is different story, all electrical devices only able to wake up by remote when in standby mode (Not power off mode).

Relax me Hermanos... This is my experience with Minix boxes.. Cuz you see, dem got users top of dem minds.. With Minix, using the power button is easy. Point at box.. Press and hold to bring up the power menu from anywhere or any action on screen.. You'll be met with 3 options.. Standby, Shutdown (for good), and Reboot. Select and done! Alternatively, just press once to enter standby and press again to wake up from stand-by/sleep mode. Best is that, even while it's shutdown. One can still power it up (perform cold boot) by either pressing the power button on the box's side or pointing the remote and pressing the power button once.. No need to touch plug here and there. Just setup, tuck the box in its corner and forget it's there. All done from the remote.. rclxs0.gif

Kidding.. Nvidia Shield is still the greatest.. notworthy.gif notworthy.gif

i used minix before. new u9-h has IR remote where u can u can power ON using IR remote, then only it boot up the android OS.
plug in power, press on button on IR remote, then it boot up.
for power off, u also can use IR remote on/off button to totally shutdown. ( depend on ur config, u can select sleep instead of power off)

old model like x8-h dont hv this feature, , plug in power, then need to press power on button on the side of the box to boot, since it need android os to boot up 1st, then only able to received the IR.
then if u press on/off button again, it just go to sleep.

for me, nvidia sheild is running android after all. every1 hate waiting for the OS to boot up like windows.
they like press on, then the screen show up.. like how those people like Mac laptops.

but i understand , not every1 have same thinking or requirement.

Yep, you used a very old model which can't be used as a reference point today or even 3 years ago. Since then and their subsequent boxes like the Neo U1 and Neo U9-H, they've learnt a fair bit, gained tech prowess and included such easy to use functions. I still use em cuz I don't need the full powers and or limitations of the Nvidia Shield just yet. When I do require such performance, I hope a 3rd more powerful and user friendly Nvidia Shield is released and or more bugs ironed out.. biggrin.gif

Yes, we all have different thinking or requirements, that doesn't mean (as pointed out by sonypshomer) that simple tweaks and tools that would greatly ease customer usage and satisfaction, should be avoided. Just as on a desktop PC, you can't say that always unplugging the power without properly shutting down won't leave negative effects on the Nvidia Shield. It does and in the long run may prove unhealthy to it and shorten it's life span.

Correct me if I am wrong, as long as the box accepts input via remote. It's still consumes power, hence in standby mode.

Minix shutdown still consumes power how little it may be

You are not entirely wrong. But it's standby to cold boot and not standby to wake mode.. Those are very distinct differences. So whatever power consumed is very insignificant because at that point, it's only powering the IR Receiver and nothing else, no usb ports, SD card, etc..not even the led light in front of the box.. Nothing else. A major advantage of this is that the box actually and safely shuts down the hard drive, ram etc.. Thereby guaranteeing that there won't be memory loss or corruption, etc as a result of repeated power off while in sleep mode. Other advantages include easy off, sleep or reboot modes.. All from the comfort of one's sofa.

i noticed that my shield remote is abit off, as in there is a significant delay. (sometimes) on and off.
it's weird, because if i walk closer to the shield, it's better.
It's not infrared, so distance doesn't make a difference, wonder if anyone experienced this?
controller is perfect
