QUOTE(adam808 @ Mar 17 2018, 10:18 AM) Good day foldies! I recently acquired myself a new Dahon Route as a birthday gift. Been riding 10-20km every weekend for past month and currently struck with a bad case of "upgradetitis" Could you guys show me the light and what is needed (including estimated price) to upgrade my bike from a 7 speed to 9? (possibly 10 if it's not too expensive) Also, do I need to change my crankset for the upgrade? Looking forward to your advice! Thanks a million Oh, here's my bike If youre looking for speed then 9 speed above is what you need but then again, its all about your leg. Mine is sora 9 speed but rarely i use 8th and 9th gear. Kayuh slow type of person i am and 7th gear is the best for me as my santai mode is 20km/j and laju mode not more than 30km/j. Perhaps you can start with crankset upgrade (53/39t) and if still not satisfied, go for 9/10 speed groupset.

Thank you KenC & Bujal.x for your advice!
Speaking of 8 speed freewheel, I managed to find a couple of options online. 13-28T & 13-32T going for RM 33 each. And Acera 8S shifter (right side) for RM 44.
Question is, will the 8 speed freewheel be compatible with my current 7 speed freewheel hub? Also, can my current Tourney RD be used for the upgrade?
Oh and, boleh ke letak FD for this frame? Been browsing those modified Dahon Route, all is on single front je.

Compatible. But try that 11-40t one, you can determine exactly what you need for your next mod. "upgradetitis" no cure wan… Resist changing everything in one go… do one at a time to determine your "leg spec". Once you determined your "leg spec" or "spec kaki lutut" than you buy what ever branded/expensive stuff that your heart desired.

Change however you like. Only after you know what you need… Rule of thumb, if you must ask "what is better", you don't know what you need yet.

Bicycle specification is a very personal thingy… You and only you can decide. Others are mostly kaki kipas me included.

Thanks again. I will hold on the drivetrain upgrades for now and focus more on the little things that matter. Better pedals (current plastic foldable ones are slippery and they look like they're about to break anytime), more comfy saddles, stronger brake levers etc etc.

U will tempt to upgrade sooner or later for better drivetrain. Better go for 10s or 9s straight. Change chainring to 55t vs 11t-32t for ur cassette. Can tackle any terrain with this. (G. Perez sapsapaui). If want more speed go for 10s. Add another chainring for better climbing. Mostly people use 39t for climbing. But with 32t at the back i doubt u need the second chainring. I upgraded from 7 speed to 8 speed. (11-34t). An absolutely bargain! Still with the 8 speed after 3000km... it just refuse to break down! I also swap to 52/36T Semi-Compact Hollowtech Crankset. My biggest climb with it was Cameron KOM. Longest ride was 182km. Used to do Frazer every fortnight for 2~3months.
Mod as you wish, don't just confine to "people say wan" you are the only one who knows what is best for you.

Thank you everyone for your input!
Do you guys have any LBS around PJ/KL can recommend for me to send my bike for upgrading?
Also, how does it really work? Do we buy the parts ourselves and send to the mechanic or we get the parts at the LBS for them to upgrade? Sorry for the noob question.

Hi sifus, will be getting a hybrid for myself soon, at the same time, was planning a foldie for me wifey/kids as well. So I got limited budget for a foldie, wallet will be kinda dried after buying me own bike Saw the Gammax brand, seems cheap around RM660 only, but how's the quality? of cos I don't expect similar quality like those respectable brands, but I just need it to be lesser problems than those cheaper china foldies
