Good day foldies!

I recently acquired myself a new Dahon Route as a birthday gift. Been riding 10-20km every weekend for past month and currently struck with a bad case of "upgradetitis" biggrin.gif

Could you guys show me the light and what is needed (including estimated price) to upgrade my bike from a 7 speed to 9? (possibly 10 if it's not too expensive)

Also, do I need to change my crankset for the upgrade?

Looking forward to your advice! Thanks a million biggrin.gif

Oh, here's my bike icon_rolleyes.gif

Thank you KenC & Bujal.x for your advice!

Speaking of 8 speed freewheel, I managed to find a couple of options online. 13-28T & 13-32T going for RM 33 each. And Acera 8S shifter (right side) for RM 44.

Question is, will the 8 speed freewheel be compatible with my current 7 speed freewheel hub? Also, can my current Tourney RD be used for the upgrade?

Oh and, boleh ke letak FD for this frame? Been browsing those modified Dahon Route, all is on single front je.

Thanks again. I will hold on the drivetrain upgrades for now and focus more on the little things that matter. Better pedals (current plastic foldable ones are slippery and they look like they're about to break anytime), more comfy saddles, stronger brake levers etc etc.

Thank you everyone for your input!

Do you guys have any LBS around PJ/KL can recommend for me to send my bike for upgrading?

Also, how does it really work? Do we buy the parts ourselves and send to the mechanic or we get the parts at the LBS for them to upgrade? Sorry for the noob question.

Hmm I don't think I could get anything better with a limited budget anyway, plus the idea of taking bimodal transport around cities kinda fancy me lately.

Upgrading to 9 Speed will cost you at least 600 bucks plus a lot of headaches.

A new bike for your usage can be had for RM 700 and beyond.

I suggest a Crius Master V (RM 1,300). Already 9 speed and loaded with Litepro parts. Balance 200 bucks can upgrade to better tires.

Or you could go with a Dahon Route or Tern Link B7

i like the brompton because i tried one when i met some of the commuter at work, it seem easy to fold and carry quickly.  Java not so much i'm stuggling to pickup the pace so it felt heavy.  ill try to check out on personal loan first from bank soon.

How about other 16 inch foldies? See: Dahon Curve. The size is about the same as a Brompton. I think its around RM 1600-ish now.

There's also a 16 inch model from Trinx, below RM 1000.

Having to pay 3-5 years installment just for a bicycle is not really a good financial decision. Get what you can afford first.

All the best! Once you get the Brompton, don't forget to share some pics with us.

Also, don't leave it outside.
