Wow finally something more interesting after quite some time.

Not bad, u got offer from HKU, from the hearsays (hearsays only la) I've gathered so far med schools in hong kong aren't bad at all. Mind to share how u applied and got your offer? Like which pre-u programme u went through etc.

Thanks a lot. >.< Haha, yeah, I'm planning to go there provided I meet their evil requirement and if things go as planned. smile.gif But my canto is pretty rotten though. cry.gif though it shouldn't be that difficult to pick up. I hope. John Hopkins used to be my dream medic school (when i was young, childish and didn't know better) and still is actually (i didn't grow up. sad.gif). Haha. Not sure if it's possible to apply for postgrad there with an mbbs. >.< Arrgh. Postgrad long way more to go so don't want to dwell too much on it.

Thanks again. >.< Haha, my hearsay sources said so too and I hope them hearsays are right. Er. I think I applied online. Sorry, haha, too many blurry application processes. There's an online part and documents to be submitted to them. Then, shortlisted for interview in HK. 12 people were shortlisted and out of the 12, 2 got offers for the Non-jupas appli. I am doing A-Levels. There were stpm students too. Apparently, they don't accept students who applied with UEC. O.o. I have no idea why.

entry requirements matters not to those already in the system or graduated......but it is EVERYTHING to those trying to get in......

hku is highly rated, and healthcare in hk is modeled after the uk, and of very high standard........in the recent survey on top asian unis, it ranks above nus........

it's legacy starts about the same time as uni malaya, in singapore.......and like um>uspore>nus, they have managed to maintain the legacy left from the british......on the other hand, um>um(kl campus)>um has slipped a lot from a series of educational boo boos..........

certainly worth taking up the offer.........cantonese can't be any more difficult than russian........smile.gif

I bet many ppl would want to be in your position now, especially those grown up watching hong kong dramas tongue.gif Don't worry u'll catch up your cantonese fast.
By the way, how much's the overall cost to finish medical education there? 5 years right?

I'm not dreaming (with my UEc, it's far more impossible), but how does one enter the top-notch schools?

I recall seeing a member of this thread which is in John Hopkins right?

Thanks for the advice smile.gif. Haha. >.< It's a bit odd cuz I was sort of the few (or perhaps the only one) who don't watch tvb dramas and when the interviewees were discussing about tvb dramas (like who the heck is laphinko? (i'm very sure i spelled his name wrongly)) i had no idea what was going on. O.o Some of them even talked about tvb with the interviewers.

According to a senior studying there, the total costs including tuition, living and accommodation is only about RM 400,000. Which is pretty affordable given its standard and all >.<. Plus there's a partial scholarship too so not sure of the amount yet. =/

I feel that the competition for NUS is still comparably higher than HKU for some reason. And according to yet another senior, the only department in which NUS lost to HKU is the student-to-staff ratio. NUS beat HKU in all other sectors. Not quite sure what year this was though she said it's pretty recent. Plus NUS has more foreign lecturers/lecturers exposed internationally compared to HKU which has a tendency of hiring their own graduates. And NUS is definitely more generous in offering places and scholarships.

But I don't think it's fair to say HKU is any better than NUS or vice versa as they're both equally prestigious in the Asian region anyway. Plus at the end of the day, it boils down to oneself how one benefits from the high standard of education anyway.

Btw, yes, it's 5 years. Haha.

And to get into top-notch medical schools...

Er...

I think it helps if you have real passion in the field you want to pursue and that you actually show it through the things you undertake (eg. volunteer work, experience, bla bla). A lot of people who apply for medic tend to have outstanding results so at the end of the day, it boils down to the sort of person you are, and whether or not you're the sort of student they'll want in their uni. And of course, they'll like to take in students that are different from the rest. No point gushing about how you love medicine in the interview when in fact, you haven't done anything to prove it (all talk, no action) so it's highly advisable that you try to gain some work experience in the field.

If i am not mistaken, you'll have to take the HK licensing exam upon graduation. I have also heard that the licensing exam is freaking tough, it's actually like MRCP, MRCS, MRCOG, MRCPH combined into one paper.

HKU is definitely one of the top, and it's even harder to enter than many of the reputable western unis, eg melb U and monash.

I heard of a person getting accepted into Taiwan National Uni (?) but more interested in UK's. If you were that person, which would you go for? And why?

Does he or she get offer(s) from UK universities as well? I think the most important factor here is $$$ la. If money is not a concern to me, of course i'll go to UK. But of course there're some other things into consideration as well eg distance from home etc

Look at the title of this thread again. Entry requirement is actually irrelevant and can be considered as off topic. doh.gif

For me, i would definitely go for TNU, as i would prefer to practice in Taiwan. I did my elective in Taipei, and the experience is wonderful. Also, if wanna specialise in the US, TNU is a better choice, as the syllabus is about the same as the US.

Bare in mind that Unis such as TNU, NUS, and HKU have more stringent entry requirement than many of the reputable unis in the western world.

Hoho! I had the same dilemma between HKU and UK. But $$$ is definitely a factor for me so I'm glad I got HKU actually.

HKU is very top notch, they dont take alot of foreigners in think. and yes canto cant be as bad as learning russian!!

haha. hypermax also can also stop posting here.

i think for the past 50+ pages this thread has been about entry only. some one should post up a prospective medical student thread. then you can bash all the questions there.

I heard houseman working hour laws have been in placed overseas already. not like malaysia you can be working back to back two 36 hours shifts, happens when they are severely understaffed. but overseas no matter what you're not allowed to work so long. cause alot of careless mistakes etc. am i right?

They are not off topic, as they are not overly concerned with the entry requirement like you. Cristiano-Ronaldo-7 is right, the discussion of entry requirement dominates this thread. It's ok to talk about it, but not excessive. Everything must be in moderation.

You claimed that you are a practicing doctor, yet you refuse to share clinical experience with us. All you talk about is the eligibility of one to do medicine, which is irrelevant and in violation of the original spirit of the thread starter. Gosh, you even talked about SPM doh.gif

I humbly suggest that you start another thread for doctor wannabes, where you can lecture them freely on how qualified they are to do medicine. wink.gif

Hey, MBBSSiang had been having some network difficulties, which we'll be expecting him shortly, and shortly after that, he's off to MMA.

You know him? He dropped me a PM last time and told me that he will be going to MMA for sure.
