Has anyone read Sinchew paper recently? Have a look at this: 吳名‧醫生的素質問題 | 評論 I'm sorry it's in Chinese. Would be glad if anyone can properly translate it. Or else use the goole translator....

Correct me if I'm wrong, since I myself is not Chinese-educated. My friend roughly translated the article orally. Although it's a bit racist, it's roughly about 7 final year Chinese medical students at University of Malaya (UM) who failed their final MBBS exam and has to undergo supplementary semester. For your information, this is the first ever failure of Chinese final year medical students which has never happened before. Incidentally, this was also the first batch of students with non-bumi matriculation students. Tho anonymous author blamed the system for denying the 128 STPM 4.0 students (the 2004 incident) from getting a place in the local university medical schools and stated that this would have never happened if the 128 STPM students were accepted in the first place.

And this is the rebuttal article written not long after the first: 吳名氏‧醫生素質與128事件無關 | 評論
Something about getting into medical school depends not only on brains but other criteria as well. And also stating that the 128 students were offered to do medicine elsewhere other than local uni.

These articles have sparked outcries from one of the junior batches, with most from matriculation disageeing with the first article. Those from STPM, who are the minority, did not participate although there was a general consensus of agreement with the first article. In other words, the age-old debate about STPM vs Matriculation has started all over again.

Being from STPM myself, I can't help but to be more inclined towards the first article, although I still think that we should not generalize things. So guys. what's your take on this?

maybe they had some quarrels with their malay colleagues and didn't manage to get exam hints from them

Matriculation is more accepted to IPTA than STPM. That's a common fact to live by.

My advice is if can't get JPA to do medicine when got 4.0, better go elsewhere and never come back to Malaysia. I'm planning to do just that biggrin.gif

I heard some university like highly regarded UK Edinburgh only concentrate on academic result and so far, they are still being regarded as top university.

Then there was a study done whereby it says something like, those with with stronger academic result entering medicine undergraduate are usually the ones sailing through the later post graduate specialist exams.

And there was another reporting saying some top Australian university see there is no benefit in looking for the other 'non-academic' qualities and was thinking of going back to selecting student purely on academic result.

Just writing what I read. Make of it what you will.

It is common for people to defend themselves like these Matric student defending how tough are their course. Sure, i would wholeheartedly agree their matric is tough but I would say STPM would be harder. It is all relative.

there has NEVER been any doubt that medical students should be selected from the academically strongest......only wannabe-doctors mediocre students, hopeful unrealistic parents and 3rd rate for-profit med schools argue otherwise......

the 'other' criteria used in aussie med schools entry is to select the most suitable from the cohort of academically very strong group, generally above ter 97........NOT allow academically weak students 'try'.....you have practically zero chance of entry below 95, and will be barred from applying below 90........even so, they have found it makes little difference, and the best students still come from those with high ter's to begin with.........in fact, melb u NEVER attempted this 'selection engineering', and admit purely based on results......and they are ranked amongst the best med schools........

other oz med schools that tried such engineering have found little difference......and some that changed into graduate entry like uq have found they are NOT attracting the best school leavers......those high flyers prefer to enter undergraduate entry med schools, or prefer to do something else, after their 1st degree.........uq have now attempted to attract some of these top school leavers by having a double degree ba/bsc + mbbs programmes......

Isn't it premature to think about mrcp? You haven't even graduated rite?

Still waiting for induction. Hopefully somewhere near KL.

Eh, no one knows anything about MRCP? I thought there are many practicing doctors here? Should know a thing or 2 right?

Or people here prefer to talk about entry requirement rather than sharing info about medical studies?

Thanks for the replies. Because i've just gone through my interview and i think i did pretty badly at the end. It was quite ok at the beginning but i got a bit stucked at the case scenario. I hesitated for like 10 seconds and my answers were not that good i think. I stumbled alot after that. I dun think i've actually answer that question.  sad.gif

Hopefully my results can actually compensate my badly done interview.  sad.gif

Oh yea, 1 more question. I know IMU will mail u a letter if u have been accepted. How if u were to be rejected? Will IMU still mail u to actually tell u that u din get through the interview and that u r not accepted?

Thanks.

sem 1 relax as much as you can honestly, sem 2 only work. but keep track of sem 2 work. you'll be missing out most the years activities when you come in. i dunno if you're a typical imu student or not. if you are you'll love the place if not suffer like me biggrin.gif .

2 hours a day leaves you with alot of time to catch up on work and have fun. so dont neglect either side. you'll be begging for fun in preparing for eos 2 otherwise. so good luck! and i wont be part of your orientation so i wont meet you smile.gif

EOS 2 MONDAY TUESDAY. HELLPPPPPPPPPP.....

SAQ- 5 mins per questions. crazy . OSPE also.

OBA has gotta boost me.

If you're malay go to Indonesia but most of the time just go to MSU or other med school in Malaysia. They're cheaper than living oversea.Try Cyberjaya medschool as requirement might be as low as BBC. Never look at their official requirement. It always lower than it. smile.gif
