any tips on Nikko?
im doin trip from Tokyo to Nikko for a day trip.

Japan guide say Chuzenji Lake is best on Mid-October. (an hour bus ride >1k yen)
i rounded my plan, earliest ride (my JR pass still active) shinkansen to Utsunomiya then JR Nikko train to Nikko.

bus ride to Chuzenji (or perhaps Ryuzu Fall but there are more bus to Chuzenji Onsen area, Kegon Waterfall than further down) n back to visit Toshugu-ji n return to Tokyo.
I would probably wont have time for Kirifuri Waterfall.

or skip Chuzenji part. stick around Toshugu area (few temple near it, Kanmangafuchi Abyss, Botanical Garden) n perhap visit Kirifuri Waterfall.
Rennoji is under renovation. so will skip it.

I just visited Nikko 2 days ago. I think Rennoji is still worth a visit even if it is under renovation which will continue until 2020. You can see the statues up close which it is mentioned that it's a rare opportunity due to the renovation. You can climb up to see the roof renovation too.

Toshogu was very crowded on the day I went. Lots of locals and school children on field trip. And weather was really nice. Around 14C.

It has been raining for the past week. And weather is forecast to be raining as well this week. There is some typhoon, but not expected to hit Tokyo. Temperature is pretty nice, average 25C and sometimes 20C which is very rare in Tokyo.

Sadly... No. Just visited the shrines and temples. You can get the earliest train out of Tokyo if you want to have more time. But I think you need to go on good weather to see the fall too? If not gonna be all foggy.

Sounkyou very touristy in that generally the ryokans/hotels are built to cater for large tour groups de. Anyway I stayed in Choyo Resort, ¥30k/night. Was OK ba, nothing particularly special or anything. More pics on blog if you interested: http://look-see-eat.blogspot.sg/2015/11/ho...nkyo-onsen.html

As for your timing ... a bit neither here nor there leh. You're already way past autumn leaves season so no koyo, yet not quite in winter sports season. See snow definitely can, just go up to daisetsuzan mountains; but those dates possibly the ski resorts haven't started operating yet (depending on your luck whether this year how early the major snow starts falling)

It's been really warm today, and a little humid. There's a typhoon on the way which I think is due to pass through (near/around) the Tokyo area maybe on Thursday.
