To all newcomers on this thread, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do some research first. There are tons of info about traveling in Japan all at the tips of your fingers, just a google click away (and plenty of info listed on this post). There are many resident forumers here on this thread that are super friendly and helpful so please do not annoy them with questions like "What to see in Tokyo?", "Recommend me sightseeing places in Kyoto" or similar questions. Narrow down your questions and list down your expectations/requirements so that we can provide you with more accurate advices.

7. Easy to find halal or pork free food in Japan?
QUOTE(mat sputnik @ Jan 8 2013, 03:01 PM)
'halal' ... because there's no certification. one thing about a traveling muslim is that, you spend time looking for 'halal' outlets, and when you get there, you see 'halal' inscriptions, some quranic verses on the walls, maybe a pic of mecca. and in many cases there's also a bar with beers and hard liquors. so you just have to trust these guys, right, because there's no way to confirm it. like this 'halal' restaurant in danang (vietnam) -- the counter has a pic of jesus on the cross, so i asked, are you a christian operating a halal restaurant? yes, he said, but all my stuff come from a halal supplier in saigon!

obsession with 'halal' foods can sometimes take the fun out of traveling. so take it easy lah. as for me, during my travels (esp. to odd places) as long as i see rice, bread, pasta, fish, eggs, vegies, i deem them all 'halal'. of course no need to check out the kitchen lah. take the journey from lhasa to everest base camp in tibet, say -- all stops are at decrepit, dark eating places, which only serve every known body part of a yak. so how? smile.gif

Go to arashiyama as early as possible, best around 8am, only joggers there. Because after 10am, tourists will start flocking into asrashiyama, so you wont be able to take nice pictures. As for Kinkakuji and Ryoanji, I am not sure that it will be as many people as arashiyama in the afternoon.
Yeah, I'm hoping tips are coming back as well  biggrin.gif

I'm no recentcid. So there won't be any tips of the month of any sort. You guys can search the previous threads or PM him for help as he mentioned in his last post.

Anyone know where to buy JR Tokyo wide pass outside Japan? My flight will arrive in Haneda at 10.30pm and I read the sale counter open up from 0745 to 1830 only. I am going to shinjuku that night.

QUOTE(amidamaru @ Sep 26 2016, 10:19 AM)
it is possible to buy in malaysia? late at night i think most of sale counter close already. If i buying the next day then a bit waste my time and money since i will directly using midnight train after arrival.

Try checking with JTB. There is one branch in KL and another in Shah Alam Aeon Mall.
Most of the time, they are more than happy to help you with your queries. smile.gif

QUOTE(Cloud2322 @ Sep 27 2016, 04:22 PM)
Hello all!

I'm planning for 11 days 10 nights trip! On November
From 7th-17th

There's a few questions wanna ask..

Do I need to carry thick shirts and umbrella? I'm not really sure would it be cold although according to the information I found it's around 15c-23c.
Need some good advice on this.
My flight is departing from KUL - OSAKA

7th-11th staying in OSAKA

Planning to take night bus to Tokyo on the 11th, so I should be arriving in Tokyo in the morning where I actually save cost for 1 night.

12th-14th staying in Tokyo

Leaving on the 14th from Tokyo to Kyoto

14th-17th

on the 17th I'll be going back to Osaka and back to Msia.

Should I get JR pass?

Any recommendation? Besides about my transports and which location is the best and the location I should be staying at.

Thanks!
*
Clothing wise, just bring a normal jacket. That temperature, tshirt and normal jacket is good enough. Most likely you'll stop by Uniqlo Japan to get more warm clothing anyways. tongue.gif

Oh and why not just concentrate in Osaka and nearby cities instead? You don't have much time in Japan to travel both Osaka and Tokyo. Somemore you have to get back to Osaka to fly out of Japan.

QUOTE(amidamaru @ Sep 27 2016, 09:38 PM)
6pm to 10pm not enough? i think 4200yen around 4hours inside there still worth it. Just walking around and try a few ride. icon_rolleyes.gif
No option left bro as i dont have much time. On the 1st day I just go any place along JR Keiyo line and Chuo line. So just walking and hopping between station. After 10 can go back direct and sleep laugh.gif
2nd day is around Yamanote Line and maybe take one or two metro line.
After a few more read I think Tokunai pass is more worth it for my plan than JR Tokyo wide pass. Am i right bro? Please correct me if I am wrong  laugh.gif http://www.jreast.co.jp/e/pass/tokunai_pass.html
*
If you ask me, Disneyland/Disneysea, it's a full day or no day at all. Don't like to rush here rush there when there's so many people around already.

i think its easier if go with someone who has been there before instead of experimenting or trial n error

even better if can speak some japanese

Japan is perfect for solo travelers. You can either just post here saying looking for traveling partners or in the thread dedicated to looking for backpacking partners.

Otherwise, exploring, experimenting and trial and error is all just part of the fun of traveling.

The travel sim is quite good. Otherwise just get pocket wifi from local sources in Malaysia, these days not that expensive also.

Hey guys, just looking for a suggestion, I'm planning for a 3 weeks to 1 month trip in Japan, trying to cover a few places.

Is it possible to cover say.. Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima in the first 2-3 weeks, then head to Hokkaido for the next half?

Will probably fly into Narito then back from Shin-Chitose via airasia.
*
You have quite some time to play around with. Yes, it's possible. Get JR Pass for shinkansen, it's very convenient to move from one city to the other. Plan out your itinerary and get back here to see if others can advice you on it. Do some research on what you want to see and stuffs so others can help you better. And when are you traveling.

The last time I spent 3.5 weeks there, I got quite fed up with Japanese food lol. Even though I'm a huge Japanese food lover. laugh.gif

To me lah, I'm a Kyoto fan so I find Tokyo stifling after a few days. Rather get out to Nikko, Kamakura etc.
*
Depends what kind of traveller you are lor. I think 6 days Tokyo is just nice. Any longer will be too much also.

Hi guys,

I am going Tokyo on April 17, plan to stay in Shibuya,
Our group are 8 people, planning to stay with Airbnb.

Could anyone give suggestion of hostel with 8 people with affordable price at shibuya?
*
Why don't you just search airbnb for 8 pax units?
Just make sure got some good reviews and contact the host beforehand.

Japan is very easy for solo travelers. It's better if you have your own friend to tag along though. It's not easy traveling with other random strangers especially if you're not a frequent traveler.

I'm planning for Osaka-Kyoto self travel for around 7 days

Any tips and advice for budget self travel?

Is rm4000 enough for about 7 days?

Accomodation tips? Is airbnb guesthouse advisable?

What about the railways, around how long from one station to the other ?

Generally if you have any advice for budget self travel, please do let me know!!

I'd really appreciate it thanks!!
