Hi,

I'm looking for a laptop which can support Linux well. I've heard that Asus, IBM and Toshiba are pretty good but I'm looking for comments from people who have tried it already and their experience on using it on their own laptops (not necessarily from the brands that I've mentioned).

Oh, and I'm a Fedora user.

Thanks. smile.gif

running an ibm r51, but bought it for 2-3 years. been running linux on it for 2 years.

work like charm on ubuntu, still can't get the internal modem working. thats the only problem. otherwise it is good. by then ubuntu comes with wireless firmware, and run and i810 graphics which have open source driver.

Thanks. I was thinking of getting one with Intel's graphics chipset as well since they have open source drivers.

Basically, I'm thinking of using it more for software development, simulation (not graphical) and working (reports etc.).

What I did last time was google my laptop's model to see what other people said about it. Works better if you choose the bigger brands, and also if the model is not too new.

OK. I guess there are no more response. I'd like to thank everyone who responded. I think most laptops seem to work without a problem but I think I'll be going for 1 with the Intel graphics chipset and make sure that the internal wireless modem has a driver and ACPI is supported. Those are probably the 2 most important parts that may have problems.

Using Ubuntu Edgy on an old Fujitsu Lifebook C2220, everything works except the MMC card reader, touchpad (not working fully - detected as ps2 mouse)... Wireless via a Belkin G PCMCIA card... The onboard ATI 340M graphics chip runs Beryl well enough, but with blur and wobbly turned off. Rain doesn't work at all.

I think getting a lappy with intel graphics for general use a good choice as the intel graphics chipset has the most mature open-source driver, as long as you don't plan to game with it... thumbup.gif

Yeah, I would also like to know how to get the webcam working. Mine is an Acer Aspire 5562NWXMi. I think the difference between 5562 and 5563 is that the former is CD, and the latter is a C2D, but that doesn't matter.

I got my wireless working (ipw3945) with NetworkManager, and my ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 (fglrx) working too. Using Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft with Xgl + Beryl. Everything's working, except the webcam, as I mentioned above.

I'm using Ubuntu for graphics. There's a good vector
package called Xara Xtreme and it's free. One or two
features are still being ported over but pretty usable.

I also use Canvas 7 for Windows through WINE. Works
quite well.

Guys, why don't you pin the thread. This will be quite a help as almost everyone of us will eventually install linux on our laptops (if haven't already).

I suggest the following format of posting:

1. Laptop make and model

2. Tested distro version

3. What does NOT work or is a hassle to set up

Comments

===========================

1. Compaq Armada M300 (P3 600MHz, 320MB RAM)

2. Fedora Core 5

3. Didn't test internal modem - no results guaranteed
3. When installing FC5 - must use NOFB switch otherwise anaconda goes white screen
3. Old Aztech wireless PCMCIA does not work (and I couldn't be bothered trying hard to fix it)

Generally - I'll use it as a home web/ftp server/squid in the future. It works okay as a "desktop", but it's an old lappie and it can't keep up with newest distros (it's slow).

It's a good Idea. You can't change a laptop's components so it's easier to know what you could expect to be broken if you get a new laptop and you could also see which old laptop works with what distro.

I'll test the V3000's pcmcia later and update my list accordingly.

Anyone tried out the hardware virtualization on a core duo laptop before? I can't seem to find any real instance of someone actually using it on a laptop.

It would be great if there's anyone here who has tried it or found a laptop that actually supports it.

What do you mean?

I'm using MS Virtual PC 2004 running Ubuntu on Centrino Yonah, but somehow, it only detects my processor as Pentium 3, 333mhz.

Painfully slow.

Currently, virtualization is done by software (well, maybe not exactly since some desktops do support the hardware virtualization). Examples are VMWare and MS Virtual PC which uses a on-the-fly translation for binaries and paravirtualization on Xen, which needs the source code of the guest OS to be modified.

However, the new Intel and AMD processors support some form of virtualization on the hardware itself. This is supposed to give a better performance in terms of robustness and speed.

Since all Core Duos are supposed to have this technology, I was wondering if there is anyone here who has seen a laptop which can actually do it. I read somewhere that it also needs a compatible chipset, bios firmware and some other stuff to enable the hardware virtualization.

Edit: After some more googling, I found that Dell will have an option in the BIOS if the laptop supports the hardware virtualization, for IBM/Lenovo the T60 supports it (not sure about others) and you'll need to check for the option in the BIOS as well, HP does not support it at all and seems like Asus doesn't support it either, as of the moment. If you want to check if a laptop supports it, try to reboot and check the bios for VMM support (Intel) or SVM (AMD). Another option is using a Linux live CD and read the /proc/cpuinfo flags. Intel CPUs should show vmx and AMDs should show SVM. I'm excited now. smile.gif

Does your laptop have the BCM4311 in it? It doesn't work well with bcm43xx-fwcutter and edgy. I got problems with that and tried NdisWrapper as some posts suggested. Seems stable for me so far.

Got my laptop last Thursday. I bought an Asus A8FM.

Tried to install FC6 but it crashed during installation twice. Then I decided to try Ubuntu 6.10 and I'm happy that I did that. Glad that I did.

Everything that I needed just worked out of the box like graphics, sound control hot keys, wireless hot keys etc. except for the soundcard (AD1986A) and the scrolling on the synaptics mousepad (not detected).

The mousepad was easy to fix but the ALSA drivers for the soundcard still has some problems supporting the internal mic and the audio output is still not working. However, external mic is working and internal speakers are also ok. Looking forward to the next ALSA drivers.

Beryl is looking great and overall, everything that I want to have is here except for wireless which I haven't tested yet.

Specs of my laptop:
T5500 C2D
1.5GB RAM
120GB SATA HDD
DVD-RAM
Intel GMA 950 Gfx
AD1986A soundcard chipset

tried fc6 too on my inspiron 6400,
it installed well, but cant seem to get the ethernet and the wireless working..
even though it has detected it if checked using lspci..

other than that, well, its the ati x1400 card, which cant seem to work as well, has to resort to vga generic driver which means no widescreen support and not being able to use beryl... sighhh

rite now, i'm using back ubuntu 6.06, every device works except for the ati card. maybe i should try ubuntu 6.10 later

me too. but i didnt have much time to play with the wireless setting. the ethernet worked fine here. as for graphics, im using the intel 945GM chipset and need to do some tweakings to get full perfect resolution.

btw, if you are running core duo or c2d machine,fc6 came with a wrong kernel. it wont detect the cpu info/speed correctly. check out the below links for more info :-

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=211941
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=212091

in other word, just upgrade the kernel to the latest version. anyway, ubuntu isnt that bad afterall. good luck.

Some updates on my Asus A8Fm.

The wireless button works out of the box and pressing it on and off turned on and off the wireless modem as well. To get the wireless drivers for the IPW3945abg chipset, you need to download and install "linux-restricted-modules-generic" from the Ubuntu repository. After that, it worked without any problems.

The brightness up and down keys (Fn + F5/F6) did not work. The events for Fn+F5 were captured but no event handlers were found in /etc/acpi/events. The events for Fn+F6 were not captured at all.

I tried Fn+F4 and it was captured and it's supposed to be the Internet hotkey but it didn't work out of the box. Anyway, I won't be using it as I don't think I need it.

So, I changed Fn+F4 to reduce the brightness and Fn+F5 to increase the brightness by writing my own event handlers.

Works like a charm now.

Other ACPI functions worked out of the box like hibernation, suspend, reduce brightness automatically when battery is used & automatically turning off backlight when the lid is closed.

Built-in camera needed the SPCA (I think) drivers and worked after that.

Sound still has some problems and I'm waiting for the next Alsa upgrade.

All-in-all, I'm very pleased with the Asus + Ubuntu 6.10. Exceeded my expectations. I was prepared for lots of debugging and kernel recompilations.

I haven't been in the Linux loop for sometime but how come the newer distro's don't work on low spec machines anymore.

I got this old P1 machine and I don't know what to do with it, its still in pretty okay condition just that Windows 98 was corrupted beyond repair and I'm looking for a replacement OS now.

Anywhere to find older distro's which flies when run on 286/386/486? The ones with minimal GUI?
I'm just going to convert it to a messanging/skype/internet browser kioks.

I'm running IBM T42 on Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon. Everything works "out-of-the-box" save for the internal modem, but I've got wireless to cover that. And yes...even compiz-fusion works like a charm!

Tried it on my other Dell Inspiron 6400. But haven't managed to get the widescreen res to work properly just yet. And worse is when you've got another widescreen LCD panel running dual-head with it.

Cheers!

i think this is a great thread but the title need to be more focused.

IBM Thinkpad R60
Installed dual boot with Ubuntu and FC5. Just got the machine

1) Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty - Gnome desktop only
Wireless is fine. Can connect to 128bit WEP wireless AP.
Inconsistent connection to projector. Works sometimes at 1024 resolution, other times must reboot but get only 640 resolution.
Virtualisation with virtual box no problem
GLX gears gave the following: 4207 frames in 5.0 seconds = 841.366 FPS

2) Fedora Core 5 - Gnome desktop only
Wireless cant work!
Havent tested fully.

I am looking for an affordable wireless camera that can be controlled by Linux laptop. Please contact me if any. The ones I have been seeing is about RM900+

i will need to get a laptop. because it's finally dead. before i rush out and get one, i need to confirm a few things.

- how many among you guys got the broadcom working. and how, using fwcutter? or ndiswrapper
- have you guy try intel 965 chipset, with x3100, how well it's run on current linux distro, because found a few lappy with this card
- nvidia, or rather their chipset. have you guys found issue with it, heard there is sound issue, is it?
- what kind of hardware, have sound issue,
- how is your experience in atheros wireless card.
- how many of you guys, experience sound issue.

actually this is not quite true. it seems that me and several other have problem with bcm4311 wireless. most ends up solving it using ndiswrapper. which i didn't try yet. i am trying to use the native driver. because ndiswrapper don't seems to be able to be used for wireless sniffing.

got my new lappy. runs on turion64 x2, with virtualization biggrin.gif biggrin.gif 1gig or ram, nforce board, work like charm on ubuntu 64bit biggrin.gif . nvidia 6150 biggrin.gif . which ubuntu have nvidia-glx in repository that need to be installed manually. via synaptic.

wireless works now via ndiswrapper, as expected. what happen is that this version of card require the b43 driver which in wireless-dev in kernel, and will be in on 2.6.23 kernel. because this card require v4 of the firmware from broadcom. so i have no choice but to use ndiswrapper for now.

p.s i will miss the time when i sniff the wireless network.

EDIT: change the problem of the firmware, add partially to the solution. problem is solved

Agreed... Don't buy a new acer aspire to install linux on... It will run after A LOT OF TROUBLE... You have been warned.. Acer will not give you the support you need either when you tell them the hardware is malfunctioning... Linux is dependant on you having hardware that works correctly. Windows may run with some defects to the hardware because its installed on the front of the disk. But linux would have problems if there's a hardware issue. My set up was faulty but acer would not repair it because they said "but your windows no problem" so your computer is fine.

Which acer r u referring to? I installed opensuse 10.3 to my aspire 4920 yesterday. Everything working fine except the graphic using the vesa driver. Going to install the ati proprietary driver tonight.

Ok maybe not everything coz I didn't have chance to test the wireless adapter... laugh.gif

Yep... And also the fact that I couldn't get my Acer Aspire 4520 to run any linux distro no matter what... There's an issue with the HD. I know it's a SATA problem but even changing the SATA mode to IDE doesn't solve it... Updating initramfs doesn't solve... Modifying GRUB and menu.lst together with /etc/fstab doesn't cut it either...

*
maybe u can try LILO?

I've tried Ubuntu, Mandriva, Knoppix, Fedora Core 8...

It's not an issue with the bootloader... I've tried both Lilo and grub... It's an issue with the OS not being able to find the boot files for some reason...

I don't get it. Can you elaborate more...
You have trouble booting? ( interpretation of : "It's an issue with the OS not being able to find the boot files for some reason...")
But still you can update initramfs? (using livecd?)
If booting failed because it can't find boot partition or something about partition, try search about grub device mapping.

Lenovo N100 running Gutsy quite well. The experimental
Intel driver is good.

Sometimes if the laptop goes to sleep automatically, it
won't resume but if you do it manually it's ok.

erm, what are you comparing? functionality? performance? user friendliness? each has its own weight, nix is tight that's why it need not use antivirus cause most of the worms are meant for windows users. there are more windows pcs out there.

update on my aspire 4920G on linux... finally get the lappie to connect to my access point successfully without WEP.

y i said finally is because initially the knetwork manager has problem connecting to the AP, keep asking for passphrase eventhough i disabled it in the ap. Finally figured out is the intel wireless adapter driver is the fault (ipw3945). Substitute the driver with iwl3945 and walla! can connect via knetwork manager thumbup.gif

I'm running gentoo linux 64 bit on a vostro 1500 c2d 7300 geforce 8600m gt with internal 2 mp webcam bluetooth intel 3945 wireless and everything works except the card reader which only reads sd cards. Even the internal modem works. I run virtualized windows guests using kvm for development and it works for the most part.

I have tried xen for virtualization but the xen kernels are quite old and do not have full support for my hardware and nvidia's proprietary driver will not build on the latest xen kernel without patching which I'm not willing to do.

hmm.....devious....you have the same acer 4520 i have too. Though mine is working ok so far.

I tested on 7.04 oso can jalan, except got little problem with wifi coz must install acer-acpi, acerwificontroller and also ndiswrapper manually.

I am running the Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 64 bit AMD on my Acer 4520 complete with sound, graphics hi res and also wifi. Took me a day get it done, since i had to source for some of the drivers and my bband line sux. smile.gif

running for 1 week so far so good, i oso dual boot with Windows XP, only prob i have is trying to install wpasupplicant to allow wpa2 on my wifi at home. If not i have to just live with WEP for Ubuntu and all is good.

Added on January 13, 2008, 6:47 pmOk got it working just have to install wicd and get acerwificontroller and acer-acpi.

So i can safely say, Acer 4520 running Ubuntu 7.10 fully.

my motto is to try the livecd first if it is available for your chosen distro.
if that runs without a hitch you don't need to worry when you install it.

Then there's shouldn't be problem..
As wut i noe.. LinuxMint is packaged with all the proprietary driver + software..
i finnaly got my laptop ACER Aspire 5500 Series Notebook to work with LinuxMint where the main constraint was the ATi graphic card.
beside the point.. i strongly recommendLinuxMint.. there won't be any problem in updating the software as it's using ubuntu software repos..

Anyway, please correct me if i m wrong. Tq.

I'm running LinuxMint 4.0 on IBM Thinkpad R60. everything works ok. graphic card (intel) supported.
Compiz running well with all the bell and whistle.
function keys mostly work except the lcd/projector F7. You need to modify the xconfig
to make 2nd monitor (projector) work. Plenty of ubuntu site explain about this.

I've run older Mint (2.0-3.0) and Opensuse 10.1-10.2 all running ok.

those of you who used opensuse, do you feel your laptop is hotter?
I have this "hot" problem.
If i left the power option to Dynamic, normal surfing will cause the system fan start running noisily. I have to set it to Powersave mode, but it is still hot.
BTW I'm using Compiz Fusion with ATI driver. Any thoughts?

I use it for more than 8 hours a day, but of course in a aircon room.

I had alot of problems with my Sony Vaio running Hardy Heron.. Bought it a year ago, 1.66ghz C2D with the Intel 3945ABG, wireless and everything works fine (nm-applet) with Hardy but the main problem is with the BIOS that Sony laptops use. There's a bug report somewhere on the Ubuntu bugtracker regarding ACPI issues with Vaio laptops, I can't pull up the link but I remember everyone who had a Vaio (not model specific) were complaining about boot problems. Removing the 'quiet' and 'splash' tags from the GRUB menu would help with the problem but occasionally it would still freeze at boot I experienced it myself too, ACPI would 'timeout' randomly during boot and freeze the whole process.. forcing the user to manually restart the laptop a few times by holding down the power button.

Depending on your mode of installation. If you are going to use Wubi to install it from within your Windows, then just mount the disc image should be sufficient. But if you want it in a separate partition, you will have to burn it in a disc.

buying Lenovo Thinkpad SL400 last Oct. Running fine with Fedora10 now.
If you want to install older version, please make sure update the kernel to 2.6.27 above.. If not, you will have a hard time for wireless driver (iwl5100)

Ubuntu 8.10 works out of the box for HP Compaq nx6325

But have not fully tested all features. Seems Wifi needs a little bit of tweaking.

All this is made possible by using Wubi and a new 500G HDD! smile.gif

will the latest Ubuntu be fine on my eeePC 900 on the 4GB SSD?

considering to either run it fully on the eeePC or maybe look at running it from a 4GB SD card (Class 6).

Hi, I'm new to linux.

I just installed Ubuntu 8.1 for my Compaq.

Anyway, is there any compatible issue to install Open Suse for Compaq? I tried installing, and after Welcome screen and I chose installation, display goes blank/dark.

Ubuntu working just fine.

hi, if you want to run linux operating system, you can select your choice with:

1. running dual operating system (linux + windows)

2. running single operating system (linux)

Please bear in mind, although linux is very powerful, most software available in the market associates most with microsoft, unless you have two laptops, you can choose to install single operating system.

i suggest you to install ubuntu 9.04 and above. Ubuntu is the most easy graphical user interface (gui). you can get open office as replacement for microsoft office. but, my experience with open office always made me miserable, all settings that i'd done in microsoft word need to be re-edit in open office.

Try updating your GC driver. My desktop wasn't showing the proper resolutoin too, not until I updated my GC. I think GC update for Ubuntu is always very easy unless if you're using other distro. smile.gif

Ubuntu is the most user friendly so far. I think... But you should wait 'till 29 Oct for Karmic Koala to release.

My suggestion, get yourself a latest livecd/liveusb with a latest kernel.
Latest kernel is important because all the latest modules(driver) is there.
Then test booting that livecd/usb before you buy.
If the tokay does not allow you test before you buy... walk away..go to other shop that allow you to do that.
Do some checking on hardware.
If everything works ... buy that laptop.

Karmic Koala is an update release of Ubuntu, which happens twice a year.

Kernel is the core of the OS, managing resource and device interaction. Latest kernel would probably has a more updated version of the device drivers, therefore better support for newer hardware.

...don't get tied down with others suggestions mate... some would 'say' ubuntu is friendly this, friendly that but I start off my students/friends/clients with fedora and they have no problems with it... I am not saying one is better than the other (*coughFedorarockscough* biggrin.gif!!!), just saying you should do some more research yourself first... as long as you use the latest kernel, you should have no problems with hardware either... but saying that, it would be a good idea if you are a beginner to stay away from the more uh... exotic flavours, since support/forums won't be as extensive as with a more established flavour e.g. Fedora, Suse and uh... Ubuntu biggrin.gif

Anyone know how to get the multimedia keys and volume shortcut keys working on a laptop? Using MEPIS 8.0.10 on my Dell Inspiron 1420. I tried mapping manually in X after hotkeys and hotkeys-daemon (or whatever that program was called) failed but still tak jadi. Dunno whether I am mapping the keys wrong or something. I mapped and saved the config already and restarted X but nothing happens.

You probably do not enable kernel module dell-wmi or that module does not exist.
Try modprobe dell-wmi

CODE
$ modinfo dell-wmi
filename:       /lib/modules/2.6.30-oshirix-spe/kernel/drivers/platform/x86/dell-wmi.ko
alias:          wmi:9DBB5994-A997-11DA-B012-B622A1EF5492

Thanks. smile.gif

If you've downloaded a live version, just go ahead test it on a notebook. chances are, the GUI is modified to suit a smaller screen, like eeebuntu I've installed on my student's notebook. For the record, I really like to clutter interface on Moblin.

Ubuntu nice, installed on Asus F8vr... WIth duel Boot OS (Win7 and Ubuntu) Ubuntu is installed on my 16GB Thumb Drive, before this scare it will clash and kacau my win7 things... so i install it on my USB, means that every time i wan to boot it, i just plug in my USB and choose UBuntu at the startup screen of the laptop... Very impressive on Ubuntu as i m a newbie and 1st timer for Lynux, Even boot on USB, everything work damn smoothly... No serious lagging, no jam, and just work fine... One thing damn marvelous is, after i install the clean copy UBuntu, everything seems working very good, Wifi is on, function key is on, Lan is on, TouchPad and even the touch scroll is on, i haven't test the mic and the finger print yet... i hope is good... @scorps: there's linux netbook distros nowadays. easy peasy and ubuntu netbook edition are some of examples.

oh yeah, not to mention the moblin/meego too. this would be even easier as moblin/meego was developed by Intel, the same company which developed Atom which was used primarily in netbooks (for now)..

ASUS X42J (a.k.a ASUS K24JR)
Intel Core i7 740QM @ 1.73GHz
4GB DDR3 RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 1GB
HDD 500GB

Running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

The rest are pretty standard stuff

Notes for owners of this laptop!

1. What works - Everything except for touchpad disabling/enabling, maybe I forgot to manually activate something

2. What doesn't
*Display - ATI drivers will have to use ATI's driver, not from repo, and do NOT use newer kernel other than the one Ubuntu came with else the driver won't work.
*Sound - speaker works but for redirecting audio to headphones, upgrade ALSA to 1.0.23 manually via a script that can be acquired HERE. Follow instructions and reboot, voila you're done thumbup.gif

-- UPDATE: I don't know but somehow 2.6.37 kernels solved my problem. Same with sound, so everything's good as done o_o;;

The free laptop provided by streamyx, HP Mini 110. Installed with opensuse 11.3 gnome, everything just fine and working except for it's broadcom wireless can't detect any wireless, however downloading the correct firmware from packman resolved the wireless issue. Speed wise, you won't want to use the win 7 starter anymore!

I just tried using ubuntu 10.10 desktop version on my old acer laptop.

spec:
Acer travelmate 4102WLMi
Intel® Pentium® M Processor 740 (1.73GHz, 2MB Cache, 533MHz FSB)
Intel® 915PM Express chipset
15.4" WXGA colour LCD, supporting 1280 x 800 pixel resolution and dual display via Acer GridVista
ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X700 with 64MB of external DDR video RAM support DirectX 9.0
60GB HDD
1GB DDR2 RAM (upgraded)
Integrated 56Kbps modem & 10/100 Mbps LAN
Integrated Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG 802.11b/g Wireless LAN
Acer SignalUp wireless technology support
DVD-Dual double layer drive
Integrated Bluetooth

so far, I haven't seen any hardware compatibility issue, the sound, wifi, touchpad, bluetooth, even some of the functions keys are working fine.

Installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my Asus K40IN. All is well, all is well. The only problem I face is the ugly resolution of plymouth screen right after I install propriety driver and reboot. But it is solved now.

Depending on what the specs are, but first you'll have to make sure you can boot the LiveCD or the LiveUSB. Else it's going to be a tough time trying to install.

But if you can get a live session running from either two then I suggest you do a test drive and test what works and what doesn't.

MSI U100Plus + 2GB RAM + Ubuntu 10.10 on latest kernel 2.6.35-28-generic after update.

Everything runs great out of the box, with WIFI, Bluetooth and all Fn keys includes my TURBO switch for this model when on AC power.

And just as a side note for people update to the very last update, which might cause problems to SKYPE fail in loading, just delete the following 2 files and load skype again and it should work.

~/.Skype/shared.lck
~/.Skype/shared.xml

Cheers ! whistling.gif whistling.gif

but it seems that its still a hit or miss thing, from the backtrack forums, the best way suggested was to boot a live cd/usb and test it out.
Sadly i tried that and alot of promoters very dulan about it.

Best option is to build up from a minimal one. Either Debian, GRML, Arch, Crux is a good bet. You'll need to do your homework to know what kind of hardware you have (especially wireless chipset) and it'll take some time. If you do it properly and install a lightweight WM, it'll fly. Learn to compile your own kernel and do some undervolting with phc to maximize battery life and lower temperatures on your netbook.

Gentoo and sorcerer work great too, but require even more time.

If you want something out of the box with all the Gnome bling-bling widgets and effects, try Fuduntu : http://www.fuduntu.org/

Other options,

Zenix
http://zenix-os.net/index.html

CrunchBang
http://crunchbanglinux.org/

Aptosid (Xfce version)
http://aptosid.com/

If you want something ultra-light and small, but without as many apps as the big distros, you can also look at Slitaz: http://www.slitaz.org/en/

Use jolicloud! Nevertheless, stay out from Ubuntu 11.10, on my netbook it's has minimal delay and lag. on 2GB dual core Atom.

Hi everyone,

Happy hari raya, I stumbler on this very old thread, i guess smile.gif and got attracted by the topic, here is my own UX on linux over the years, it all started in year 2000-2002, wow I am very old.

Back then, it was hard to learn or deal with linux problem, where all my PC kaki are all win based... sad.gif and getting help from internet is not easy if your 1st linux distro installation doest get the modem to work!

Fast forward to year 2006-08, where I got my hand on one of the Ubuntu distro, forgot the version number, forgive me guys. I do remember I did the installation on the Pentium 4 (Dell) desktop, everything just work out of the box.

And time goes by, in year 2010, I bought a 2nd hand Dell laptop with AMD64 cpu that came with it. And I upgrade the bios under win xp b4 I removed the default OS. Well according to Dell that this laptop only supported upto 2GB (max), but Ubuntu linux told me differences things, " sudo lshw " .

walah... it shown the Dell laptop can support upto 4GB, hmmm... after some research on the web, I bought new 4GB ram and remove the old ram, here goes the new 4GB ram. Then install Ubuntu 64 bit OS. Done deal smile.gif happy os, happy laptop , and a happy guy

drum roll, here the new toy in year 2013, my new Asus K46C . This time Asus told me (what they told the world in their product specs, this K46C just run at 8GB max). As always, "sudo lshw" it shown 16GB max. Alright, so I told my pc supplier to install 16GB on it, after it send by from Asus with the new 16GB installed. By then I am ready to roll up my sleeve and install the Ubuntu 13.04 64 bit OS on it. Everything work fine, aside for the display card, battery time and the brightness bug, I can live with those bug smile.gif

a side note : if anyone play with the mini-itx (intel box), this baby can hold up to 8GB ram, not 4GB as they advertised !

I'm lusting over this rig but it sure as hell won't ever get to this side of the pond. Closest thing probably would be the latest Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro but it's not the small OTG size I'm looking for. Hopefully there's a Yoga 3 11 in the pipeline or anything else similar.

Sorry for very late reply.
Mint LMDE can upgrade to newer versions "forever" without breaking anything.
Base distro is debian, not ubuntu.

I think for compatibility questions, Google for that particular model and its relevant models, most things are covered in Archlinux wiki there and can applied on Ubuntu too

generally should be no problem but do take a test drive with an Ubuntu live USB or you haven't bought yet? hmm.gif

Cant go wrong with Thinkpad.

But still, you have to face one universal linux problem:
Fingerprint sensor driver that actually work is nonexistent.

I doubt many people will be able to reply to this thread. Did you open a new thread on this?

If im not wrong, generally HP laptops are almost always compatible with Ubuntu. I've just installed the 18.04 LTS on one of my 4 year old HP Pavillion, so far good for the usual media and web surfing usage. You might want to try dual booting before installing it on yours, just to test check the necessary.

Do not buy HP 15-BE series. It is extremely struggling experience to install wifi drivers on it. I managed to do it when i was in my home country and had ubuntu 14 (LTS version) but when i decided to upgrade to newest version of Ubuntu I couldn't use wifi at all and drivers didn't provide for the newest version. I had to use Linux Subsystems to do my development work. So try to avoid it.

Actually, Not all models, The one I am currently using has lots of quirks for Linux. One of the major one though was wifi driver. It was hard enough and took me lot of time and efforts to figure out for ubuntu 14 but new version of ubuntu completely broke my os. I had to switch back to windows and use the linux subsystems to get my work done.

Many of these problem can be solved by using updated kernel.

I have a old HP pavillion. 2014 old. Hmm windows is so bloated, i might install linux and play around with it. Older machine performs way better on Linux(ubuntu) than windows right?

In general. Shouldn't have any driver issues as well as Linux has good supported if the hardware is out for a year or so. Newer laptops generally have more problems with driver support.

Hi every Linux Master, I am currently using Asus S56cm with i7 3517U Processor. It is already 6 years old. Thinking of experience Linux and wanna install it in my windows laptop. Is my laptop able to install Linux? Is it good for dual booting? Will Windows and Linux mess up everything? Btw Ubuntu or Mint is a better choice for newbie like me?

Main problem of laptop for Linux that some older models do not really support something like standart SATA 3 SSD today they always do keep it like something of like SATA 3 HDD or SATA 2 SSD speeds for whatever reason anyway.

biggrin.gif Currently I am rely on Dell XPS 14 with Ubuntu 18.04 with latest stable kernel install into my notebook. I am thinking to purchase a Macbook Air and replace operating system with Ubuntu Linux. That's my planning for MCO.
