running an ibm r51, but bought it for 2-3 years. been running linux on it for 2 years.

work like charm on ubuntu, still can't get the internal modem working. thats the only problem. otherwise it is good. by then ubuntu comes with wireless firmware, and run and i810 graphics which have open source driver.

dell ideastorm is ended for sometime, seems like dell is going to sell laptop with linux preinstalled. along with desktop.

hmm, we may not get our favourite distro, at least, the laptop is alot easier to work with.

i wonder whether it will come to malaysia

i will need to get a laptop. because it's finally dead. before i rush out and get one, i need to confirm a few things.

- how many among you guys got the broadcom working. and how, using fwcutter? or ndiswrapper
- have you guy try intel 965 chipset, with x3100, how well it's run on current linux distro, because found a few lappy with this card
- nvidia, or rather their chipset. have you guys found issue with it, heard there is sound issue, is it?
- what kind of hardware, have sound issue,
- how is your experience in atheros wireless card.
- how many of you guys, experience sound issue.

QUOTE(kockroach @ Sep 4 2007, 04:10 PM)
my broadcom works out of the box in ubuntu
*
actually this is not quite true. it seems that me and several other have problem with bcm4311 wireless. most ends up solving it using ndiswrapper. which i didn't try yet. i am trying to use the native driver. because ndiswrapper don't seems to be able to be used for wireless sniffing.

got my new lappy. runs on turion64 x2, with virtualization biggrin.gif biggrin.gif 1gig or ram, nforce board, work like charm on ubuntu 64bit biggrin.gif . nvidia 6150 biggrin.gif . which ubuntu have nvidia-glx in repository that need to be installed manually. via synaptic.

wireless works now via ndiswrapper, as expected. what happen is that this version of card require the b43 driver which in wireless-dev in kernel, and will be in on 2.6.23 kernel. because this card require v4 of the firmware from broadcom. so i have no choice but to use ndiswrapper for now.

p.s i will miss the time when i sniff the wireless network.

EDIT: change the problem of the firmware, add partially to the solution. problem is solved
