Planning on getting either a hybrid or folding bike for short range commuting + exercise. I checked USJ Cycles and the cheapest they have in stock is around 1k.
I also went online and saw some sub RM500 ones. Wanna ask how much I should spend for my first bike and what brands I should look into? |

Try scouting around more. You'd be surprised when you compare it to usj cycle's prices later.

QUOTE(belson0425 @ Jul 19 2017, 11:36 PM) Planning on getting either a hybrid or folding bike for short range commuting + exercise. I checked USJ Cycles and the cheapest they have in stock is around 1k. USJ Cycles sell their bike same price as their online. Is slightly cheaper than list price. I visit their shop before, service are ok, not too pushy and patient enough to explain. I also contacted "WMS Adventure-Bicycle Shop", their price are cheaper, shop at Wangsa Melawati yet to visit. My guess part of the additional cost are due to rental and operation cost, USJ Cycle is at one of the prime area and their bike shop are more modern and comfortable to walkabout.I also went online and saw some sub RM500 ones. Wanna ask how much I should spend for my first bike and what brands I should look into? Try search from here first http://bicyclebuysell.com/, and visit their actual shop before buying. I do see some member here selling some fine used foldable, maybe they can offer you a "beginner" price This post has been edited by weikee: Jul 20 2017, 08:59 AM |

Hunt for the best deal online only if you are very good mechanic. Or buy from your friendly neighborhood bicycle shop. Driving 20km across town for any sort of tuning, repair, after sales service will be tedious and add up cost too…
When I first started looking for bicycle online, it sent me all over the state for a few months, than I just took a ride around town and realized there are 3 bicycle shops within 300m radius of my home… over 20 within 5km radius including Roda link, GW cycle, Specialized flagship shop, Vans etc etc… 80% of them don't show up on Google search… So ya, bicycle shops had been around us before WW2, they are everywhere, many of them are 2nd 3rd generation family businesses... many don't do expensive bikes, but many still do. Some are outdated but there are also Mahguru hidden somewhere right under your eyelids. Hunt around your neighborhood for a good bicycle shop that meets your needs and wants. Don't be intimidated. Bicycle has been around for over a century, it's not rocket science. The headaches comes because all the bike makers go the extra mile to ensure parts are not compatible. Here is where you need to read up to find the right stuff to go together. Since bicycle today are highly customized, you need to find your needs and wants. The only way to discover your needs and wants is to start cycle. So, just buy one and ride the hell out of it. And move on to the next bike or start modifying once you know your needs and wants. *PS, there are no such thing as a perfect bicycle… This post has been edited by KenC: Jul 20 2017, 10:22 AM |

But before this I met this guy, solo ride on recumbent bike from Kuching to Miri. Met him at Kuching highway and then few days later I saw his bike at this hotel lobby at Miri. |
