The Negri Sembilan Education Department is conducting a study to identify schools with a low student enrolment before deciding on the next course of action.
Its director Rusni Ab Jalil today said a task force would be set up soon to identify the schools in the state with a declining student intake.
She said there were 113 schools in Kuala Pilah, Jempol, Jelebu and Port Dickson with a low student enrolment.
“This is because the people have moved out and the number of schoolgoing children has eventually reduced,” she said.
The decision on what to do next would be based on the enrolment trend of the last three years at each school, she said.
Asked whether smaller schools would be built in the districts with a shrinking population, Rusni said the new schools that were built were already smaller with fewer classrooms.
“Previously, the schools had 36 classrooms, now they have 24 classrooms,” she said.
She said although more schools were being established in developing areas, the number of classrooms was reduced.
Meanwhile, SJK©) Parit Tnggi in Kuala Pilah has been moved to Bandar Sri Sendayan.
“The school has a low students enrolment and after careful consideration, the school was given a new building in Bandar Sri Sendayan,” she said.
In Negri Sembilan, 16,723 children started Year One, and 18,088, Form One, today.
There are 102,312 primary pupils and 90,649 secondary students in the state. – January 4, 2016.
