yes, it would reform, so the night aeration is to break the film. also to increase the surface air circulation to increase the oxygen level in the tank since the plants are not doing photosynthesis.

otherwise, you can try surface skimmer.

yea eheim classic 350 (2215), just what I have in mind.
wanted ecco pro 200, but the price...

My vote goes to eheim classic - unless you want to go for premium brands like ADA or the chihiros.

Hey tehoice, I'm currently using a lily pipe, is that one of the methods to diminish the thin oil film? I thought that's for producing oxygen during night time.
*
If you want to do night aeration, and don't want to lift and lower your lily pipe manually every night/day, then you can consider what I'm doing.

See pic.

Its a U-pipe connected to an air tube, which is connected to an air pump. Once the CO2 cuts, the air pump switches on. But you need to be careful about water doing a backflow when the air pump is off. Water could backflow and fill your pump instead. So you will need to put in a one way check valve and raise the tube like what I did.

Let us know if night aeration solves the film problem.

I'm using night aeration too, but its not for any film.

Chihiros not really premium, just a copy of ADA.
Should go for either eheim classic 350 (2215) or Fluval 206

question. those cheap shrimps you can get in normal aquarium shops (they sell for RM1 per cup), does it eat algae? and is it safe to put in with other fishes like danios?

those ghost shrimps, if you starve them, they will take algae. safe or not, not too sure, but i think is ok to mix.

I have ghost shrimps in my tank. They're not very good with algae but excellent at cleaning up uneaten fish food. And they're pretty harmless to fish.

my ghost shrimp i bought like rm2 covers nearly my entire 4ft tank. algae eater or not, they are quite nice to populate the tank.. haha...

but most of them have short lifespan...

All shrimps eat algae and leftover waste. Only question is how much?
Ghost shrimps are not safe to crammed with Danios unless its a planted tank with lots of hiding places.

Yamato shrimps are popularly used as algae eaters and they are safe from Danios. They are bigger and won't be picked on.

For algae eater shrimp - I think Amano/Yamato and Malaya Shrimps are quite a popular choice. I use Red Cherry Shrimp because they look good in the tank smile.gif

yep..i bought 2 batch of amano..1st batch 3 young size..but for 1st week, only 1 survived..later in the 2nd batch, i bought 3 bigger/adult size and they survive until today..tank got cherry barbs and tetra neon..maybe the reason the 1st batch died is bcause the fish keep checking the shrimps whether it is food or new tankmates.

Hi davlee, welcome! I started high tech tank 3 months ago.

Yes, you can have a low tech tank which doesn't use co2 (maybe just liquid carbon), that's mean you won't have a lot of choice of plants, plants will grow much slower and doesn't need a lot of light.
