Here is my tank. I'm a complete newbie so pardon me. I'm not sure if the filter thing at the left corner of the tank is a salt water only feature and whether it's removable. For convenience sake I'm actually considering to convert it into a rock and sand only cichlid tank if a planted tank is too inconvenient. Please advise.

chuakz : as long as the tank doesnt leak, it will be fine. but i do caution if the tank has been kept outside (as in under sunlight) because prolonged dry tank will make the silicone crack and thus leaking will happen later on.

your tank has built in filter compartments which will save space coz u only need a motor pump to bring the water back into the tank again. cleaning maybe a hassle due to the tight spaces.

about cosmetics wise, due to old tank and also you already have fishes in it, i would advise to use it as it is. the salt water created lime deposits (the white line above water levels) which could only be removed using vinegar or manual scraping with pocket knife etc. again since its tight space, i dun think you can reach those areas in the filter.

i do not have experience with cichlids but i think they may need larger tank to roam more freely. from your pics, the fishes already limited space.

last thing, is tat a heater? i dun think ur goldfish need heater ba... the room temp is about 28c to 30c is quite normal for these fishes right?

hope above helps. if you need any advise, do let me know further.

cheers.

add on : looking at the filter compartment, i feel there is missing a piece of glass? there should be another piece to separate the filter area so that the unfiltered water will not flow directly into the filter substrates (the black ball thingy you have there)...

thanks for the advice. i need to ask my dad about the details with the tank as he knows it better. i don't think there is a heater, not sure what that thing is though. thinking of getting smaller cichlid species.

Wanted to share my male Pearl Gourami. Rarely (or just me?) see this species. Got him from Fish Depot, the last one in the tank. Feed him and the tetras New Life Spectrum Small Fish Formula almost exclusively and my cories Hikari Sinking Wafers.

Related to planted tanks: I just changed to the Up Aqua Pro Z LED light smile.gif I got it during Fish Depot's sale period and for the price (RM 180+), totally worth it since don't need to change tubes anymore. I only have low tech plants like Anubias, Java fern and moss however.

i have thought of putting the downlights on my 4ft tank but ended up with led spotlights. much cleaner look and dun have to worry about protruding ballast etc. plus the chance of the water splashes during water change also better to get those outdoor led spotlights.

3 ft tanks should ideally have about 3 x 20W 6000k lights. i know mine with 2 x 50w but it was overkill. now i went down to 20w red/blue grow lights. all plants are liking it. i have have mostly java ferns / anubias and some Straugyone on foreground.

cost wise i am not sure how much are the spotlight locally coz i bought it overseas and get it shipped at rm250 per piece (3 years back!). it should be much cheaper now.

u should consider the led spotlight.

Hi, I'm getting ready to start my planted tank, so I have been doing a lot of research and also visiting local fish shops to know what's do they have.

I visited -
- Midvalley East Aqua
- Ikano East Aqua
- NSK Kuchai Lama Alive Aquarium
- ADA Malaysia
- Irene aquarium
- Nilufar in scott garden
- Aquatic International Shah alam

Do you guys have your favourite local fish shop that sell many aquatic plants? I have been looking for "Limnophila Hippuroides".

Hi Guys,

I faced a critical situation last week where 90% of my fish population and 1/2 of my aqua plants died after cycling about 40% of water change with Anti-Chlorine.

I had to separate my remaining fish to a separate tank while re-scaping and change whole tank of water. My fish survive but my aqua plants doesn't look too well. For your information, i'm using Seachem Excel and Flourish. Any hints of what went wrong?
