Your vet doesn't do scaling? I'm surprised that wasn't the first thing they recommended. One of my cats had gingivitis grade 3 and within two weeks of adopting her, they took her in for cleaning/scaling. She ended up having 9 teeth extracted, but that's not something that is guaranteed to happen for your cat.

How old is you cat? If it's young, then yes, send your cat in for cleaning. Reason why age is important is because older cats cannot handle the general anaesthetic that they will have to go under.

I don’t know if they do scaling or not, going to go ask next week on Monday! I’m very surprised they didn’t recommend anything too. I had to do researches all by myself.

When I first brought her to a vet nearby it was because one of her ear is very dirty and I was scared to clean by myself (because it was near with her eardrum) and I also told the vet how she sometimes would scream in pain out of nowhere or would scream when we touch her neck and mouth area. He opened my cat’s mouth to check it and said “oh it’s nothing too serious, it’ll heal by itself. If her condition get worse come here again”. He just gave me some kind of ear cleaning product for cat and that’s all. I thought nothing was too serious with my mouth’s cat but then she continue to scream out of nowhere so we brought her to another vet for another opinion. That’s how I know that my cat has gingivitis. The other vet injected my cat and provided some meds for 1 week. After she’s off her med her pain comes back then we went to the same vet again for injection and meds for 20 days. This time the meds doesn’t seem to work on her anymore that we decided to go for the first vet we went to (but different doctor) he then injected my cat again and gave 2 antibiotics for 10days. On 7 days or something she seemed to be in a lot of pain that I decided to bring her to the same vet again, by that time her gums were really red and that’s why she didn’t eat much and always hiding somewhere around the house. He injected some steroid and told me to continue the antibiotics if I can. By that time I decided to do all the researches by myself then found out supplements might help so I asked the vet about it and he finally showed me a multivits + lysine supplement 😅

Sorry for the tldr; but I just wish some vets would do their job properly to prevent the conditions from getting worse =_= how come they never recommend me anything ;-;

My cat is 3 years+, I heard so too but I wonder if 3 years is still fine to go under GA? Tysm for letting me know about your experience and helping me out! I really appreciate it and sorry for the tldr reply 😅

Yeah I didn’t know too 😭 thank you so much for the tips! I want to bruah her teeth but I’m afraid I’ll accidentally hurt her especially because she already has gingivitis.. tysm!

hi,

pls dont try to brush ur cats teeth with the current condition not solved.

from your description, the vets that you have consulted doesnt really know what is going on with your cat,

and you yourself cant properly check your cats mouth, cos it is in pain.

so the best way is to have your cat sedated then only the vet can check what is going on there.

i advice that you should consult another vet apart from these 2 klinik.

3yo is still young cat, but if u worry, best can be done is to do a blood test before going for any GA.

the swollen gums might be a dental condition, and might be not, it has to be thoroughly examined.

the cat needs to be sedated in order to properly examine the mouth and other parts.

I study this website many years ago, regarding cat dog dental problems, not sure if u have come across it.

it is a very good read. if you have time, read the whole website. biggrin.gif

Having 9 cats now, (6 offspring from a pair) and spending about RM 400 on food/litter alone. I think thats a bit on the high side no? Not including visit to the vet!

How do people with lots of cats do it more economically? Any tips & tricks?

...

i guess cheapest way is buy whiskas in bulk bags. also buy cat sand in bulk. for vet, go to govt vet. can also mix their food with rice which also lower cost. not practical to raise 9 cats unless you have a large space though... also not good for your health if no purifier or good ventilation in the home.

govt vet cheap?

i have not gone to gov vet for long time. 30 years ago i live in a town without private vet and have to go to gov vet. i remember every time i went the cost is around RM10 to $20, at that time, if you go to human clinic it just around RM10.

few years back i also read the price list of gov vet in sec 15 shah alam, and the price is just slightly lower (around 10) than private vet.

get some advise from vet or go to a pet store to ask. normally small kitten need milk and lots of care. they will get you a bottle and milk formula for the kitten.

We found a cat yesterday, male, maybe 3 month old. Gave some food and now he lives near our house (we have a big indoor cat too).

Kitten is healthy but I want to get rid of flea and ear mites. What do you recommend? Considering he will be street cat, once we get rid of flea, do you recommend anti flea collar?

Do you recommend frontline for flea and something else for ears? Where to buy?

Thanks!

To all readers,

I have read that essential oils (e.g. coconut oil) help prevent flea re-infestation on cat but there is an article that this is not safe on cat because cat's body can't excrete essential oil efficiently. Basically toxic to the cats. So beware & do research more if anyone thinking on using essential oils on their cat.

Try give him a bath first. Don't use human shampoo/soap but use one for animal/cat. You also can use dish washing soap.

For ear mites, I recommend bring him to the vet.

Last time vet didnt do anything for mites. Said buy drops. Drops had to do for 40 days, only that's how got rid of mites. Maybe have more efficient drops?

The vet didn't clean the ears for you? One of my girls had earmites while she was at the shelter and they got rid of the mites for us before we took her home. 40 day drops? That's just weird.

Cleaned, yes. Just few days later more dirt came out. If there are already mites, there could be eggs as well, so takes long time to get rid 100%

I clean my cat's ears occasionally. Try clean your cat's ears using ear cleaner (liquid) which you can get at pet store. I think this is faster way to clear ear mites. My cat's ears remained clear the next day & he/she stop scratching his/her ears.
