QUOTE(dEviLs @ Jan 28 2007, 06:27 PM) Hi guys, have a few questions on star tortoise: here's a quick answer for ur question1) Do i need to provide them with a water dish? 2) I m using corn cob pellets as bedding, is it fine? 3) I m not suppose to feed them high protein food right ? 4) Do I need to bath them ? Thanks in advance 1. yes u need all living thing drink water 2. im not very sure on this, i heard some ppl said cord cob pallet got toxic or something but im not very sure on this, someone plz correct me on this thanks. however most of us use wood chip as bedding. 3. yes you are right, only greens 4. it's a good practice to soak them everyday, this is to allow them to release their poop and urate, which is crucial in preventing bladder stone. hope this give you some basic idea about ur question, hope other sifu will add something also, especially the 2nd answer. |

About the drinking water, do I need anti-clorine for that ? And also whats the best way to soak them ? Like how deep the water should be and the temperature. I read somewhere that 40c is ideal http://www.cngui.com/Article/Special/yinxing/Index.html Also found this useful site, but in Chinese |

QUOTE(dEviLs @ Jan 28 2007, 08:43 PM) Thanks alot, that helps i think no need anti-chlorine lar, i just use tab water, never use anti-chlorine. the soaking water level should never higher than ur star's nose, better just reach "dagu" there, around 1cm like that, and the temperature i never measure it lar but i make sure it's not too hot and warm enough for a human baby to bath into lol soak it around 20min ok oledi.About the drinking water, do I need anti-clorine for that ? From experience.... woodchips is better. Tortoise tend to pee alot, when corn cob become wet, it will harbour bacteria and mold.... also, corn cob is small and can get stuck on wet genitals. Another fact is that corn cob can accidently be eaten by tortoise, so kinda dangerous since can cause impaction.
For me, I use a mixture of woodchips and wood pellets. Gives good results and I do spot cleaning once a week while major cleaning only when the wood pellets become mushy. |

cat litter does the job nicely. it's cheap too. wood chips tend to trap moisture if not monitored properly.
for adults, you may try neo peat (can get at nurseries, about RM14-15 for a whole lot of them). the bacteria in the substrate breaks down faeces and such, so the substrate lasts longer, no smell whatsoever. much cheaper than wood chips. however, it is troublesome for baby torts as the substrate could stick to wet parts. me and uzairi learned this from someone who refused to be known hwa: torts should drink water that we drink, plus occasional calcium supplement. untreated tap water is not advisable... jared: found your answer yet? |

QUOTE(dEviLs @ Jan 28 2007, 06:27 PM) Hi guys, have a few questions on star tortoise: I will answer the 3 question for you since others had already answered your question. About the food, leafy green are recommended like sawi(mustard green) for their daily staple food and alternate them with bendi(lady finger), kacang buncis(french beans), kacang pangjang(long beans), Exo Terra Tortoise pellets and once a month labu(pumpkin) as pumpkin is a good natural dewormer and good for their stomach.1) Do i need to provide them with a water dish? 2) I m using corn cob pellets as bedding, is it fine? 3) I m not suppose to feed them high protein food right ? 4) Do I need to bath them ? and may i add... kangkung is not advisable for stars because they may refuse other greens altogether once they tasted kangkung. and kangkung might cause calcium binding right?
good food includes hibiscus flower and leaves, grape leaves, opuntia. hibiscus and grape leaves are not tasty, so the torts might not like them but they are rich in fibre. and i don't think that the majority of us would cut their opuntias...
