Actually, it is illegal to catch wild animals and take them as pets in Malaysia... but our law still a bit slow loh.
Soon, star tortoises may need licence but that was just said, not done yet... I heard it last year summore... Porcupine and Pangolin, the wild ones in our forest is illegal to keep... if you caught keeping one can kena high fine loh. I dunno bout tortoises and turtles though.... still, we gotta be careful. |

Actually, they do catch... just cannot catch everyone of them. Also, the enforces dunno when or where the turtles lay eggs, as in their direct spot, so sometimes it's hard for them to monitor. Also, there are more turtle egg stealers than there are enforces...

QUOTE(ekiddie @ Sep 16 2006, 11:01 AM) as said all these tortoise lives on dry land... but in de wild... it does rain and heavy downpour mar, rite... so, where all these guys hide?? wat if flooded? will these fellas died? or de habitats of these tortoise won't have downpour and plain sunlight? In the wild, well, most of the land tortoises try to stay on the dry areas.... when rain, if a little is ok, they do enjoy a little rain. If say african and indian tortoises... well, they don't get much rain. But when flood, they drown... no choice. But most of the tortoises will go to higher land sometimes...hehe... know nothing much about tortoises tho... |

Hatchling sensitive mah... very prone to diseases.... I have experienced this before. Pet Family get older stock so that they got less chance of dying. Other countries, even RES gotta be sold at minimum of 4 inches... but RES here people only want small small plus they are easier to maintain than land tortoises in terms habitat.

If turtles are fed a diet of fish, shrimp and turtle pellets, already got calcium in their diet.
Only land tortoises need the extra calcium coz land tortoises do not eat fish or shrimp. The fish and shrimp already has natural calcium... land tortoises eat greens... so greens don't carry enough calcium. We also cannot feed tortoise pellets to them everyday coz tortoise pellets is actually high in wheat and corn, not what tortoises eat in the wild and high in protein. A land tortoise basically needs more fiber in their diet. The extra calcium from supplements boost their bone and shell health. |

Singaporeans try and make do with Chincillas and hamsters heheheh, cheap also.... but they got better freedom with dogs.. unlike here, not so open minded bout dogs lah.
The rule was impose so that people will not be careless and also sellers won't go and catch wild animals. you see, most of our exotic pets here, especially reptiles are caught from the wild... if keep catching the wild animals, sure pupus later loh. Most of the turtles and tortoises are wild caught... pity lah but that is Malaysia's pet trade. Singapore saw this happened in their country and they wanna preserve the wild animals so they make a law that no wild animal or exotic pet should be caught or kept as a pet. It keeps suppliers from asking the orang asli to catch wild animals also... Also, many people tend to abandon their exotic pets. If I'm not mistaken, there is a turtle and tortoise santuary there.... it houses the confisticated tortoises and turtles I think... or is it a library? LOL, my brain not working so my memory fuzzy... but many exotics get abandon at the zoo and animal shelter.... In Malaysia also the same mah, Zoo Negara always get Iguanas, snakes, parrots, rabbits, mice and gerbils and loads of RES dumped at their doorstep. But many do not know that most of the rabbits and mice and gerbils or whatever rodents are fed to the snakes.... as food.... no choice, Zoo Negara no space to upkeep more animals and of course rodents are food to snakes. One day, this law will come into Malaysia... I sense it loh.... We just dunno when. |

Hay can become moldy and breed bacteria when wet. Stick to woodchips. It is the best.
You can also try a brand called Woody Pet. I mix the woodchips with Woody Pet, absorbs pee very well. |

QUOTE(shadowcaster @ Sep 26 2006, 07:44 PM) Suggest wood chips. Get Chipsi Extra... or you can go for Woody Pet, great at absorbing pee... I found the best is mixing Chipsi Extra with Woody Pet, works really well compared to many types of bedding I used.I have used Aspen wood shavings, corn cob, peat moss.... forest bark.... |
