That is called withholding tax. It is because you didn't apply for a Tax File Number. So go apply for a Tax File Number from the ATO, then tell the bank your number and they'll give you back your money.

Your uni should have a online market place, right? Otherwise google around and see.

There should be plenty of noticeboards plastered all over the uni which people advertise second hand stuff. Online sites most universities should have their own so maybe if you ask around in uni you might get the answer biggrin.gif

If possible can you attach the weight of each category packed, I'm sure it'll help more. =P

Really simple. Cut back alot on clothes. Wash more often. Bring only one jacket/windbreaker here and use it all the time. Get additional ones if you want here instead =P. Don't bring too many CDs, if you have enough time just get an external HDD and copy them all in.

You're missing bedsheet or a blanket/quilt cover. You can get it here though, but I had extra so I brought them. Jackets, you don't really need that many IMO.

Most importantly don't forget your passport.

Its possible to trim to the minimum, but even when I pack, its hard to keep it light.

Lightest I ever got was 10kg of clothes, and 10kg of gadgets.

Been in Melb for 3+ years already. Avoid bringing in food if you can. Cause if you do, you could get fined, or worse, end up on Border Security the TV show.

MildBluese,
Don't bring your blank CD/DVD and make a copy of all software, movies (legit and/or pirated) as a CD iso image and save it on a portable hard disk rather than bringing them all. You can buy blank CD/DVD easily for cheap at local comp stores, JB-Hifi, BigW, etc.

@Sesshoumaru: Well, I can't attach the weight of each category because I packed them all together in a bag and a few boxes. Besides, the weight will vary for other people depending on the weight of the bag they use. My bag seems to be the heaviest. x.x 6.5kg when it's empt, what a waste of weight!!! Argh! As for the quilts/blanket, my brother advised me to get it there since malaysia's comforters are too thin for the weather during winter.

@chris: o.0 *glomps* Thank you for the brilliant idea!!! Now the problem is how to save the ISO thing. x.x My Nero only allows me to save it in NRG. Is it different?

@KV: I haven't really decided on the course yet. x.x I applied for Commerce but there's a big chance I might switch to Mass Com when I arrive. I'll be studying in Perth.

^ try to get the extra baggage allowance from the travel agent/office that u got ur air tickets from. eventhough i dont need it, i always apply for it just for the sake of applying(extra 10kgs). when u pack, ur jackets try to pack it into ur hand carry, and sandwich your electronic equipments between the jackets so they wont move around that much when placed in the cabin. remember, 1 hand carry, and 1 laptop bag. hand carry is about 7kgs if i'm not mistaken, so in total u would have about 37kgs(with the 10kgs extra if u apply for the permit, and im not sure the 7kgs includes the laptop or not sorry)

also, try to fold ur clothes like how u would normally do, after that, roll them up and place them into the luggage immediately, side by side, that'll free up abit more space. try to place your shoes in a plastic bag(preferrably sneakers) then when u declare, declare that u have soiled shoes. when u reach the perth airport, head to the red lane after claiming ur baggage, and the attendant there will either 1. ask u to go thru the xray, or 2. let u go just like that without even checking. that's what i get every time.

it's riskier to go thru green lane if u have lotsa baggages and u might be asked to open up ur stuff if ur unlucky. don't fret if the red lane is too packed, cos the more packed it is, the better for u since if u declare soiled shoes, they'll ask u whether u've been to muddy areas(just tell them u jog with those shoes, they'll ask u where u jog usually, say u jog either on roads or on treadmills, but just declared anyway just to be safe), after that they'll most prolly xray ur stuff or let u go since they have more important ones to search anyway.

what uni are u goin to anyway? why havent ur course been finalized eventhough its already so near to the start of sem?

Whhoopp, kinda late here but well........

I've been studying in Aus for about 3 years now and still going on..... I left for AUS (Melbourne) after form 5, did Cert 4 (1 yr) there and then continued on to Diploma (1yr)..... did those 2 in MIBT at Toorak (also known as Deakin Uni at Toorak).......

After that I continued on with my degree in Deakin University at Burwood...... at first I was doing the Bachelor of Contemporary Arts, majoring in Film and Video but I've change my major to Animation and Digital Culture..... so now trying to finish my degree......

Generally I'll put Melbourne as a rather laidback and relaxing city..... now being a geeky and indoor person I am, I'm unable to comment on the nightlife in Melbourne but I would guess the nightlife to be quite adequate here....... there are quite a few festivals here and there in Melbourne, like the comedy festival, moomba water fest, christmas parade etc........

I've already gotten the extra 10kg limit. ^^ Thanks for the advise. If I'm not mistaken, the extra 10kg limit is given to you upon the presentation of your student card and that no application is necessary? Correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm from penang as well! Going to Curtin International COllege. Well, I've registered for the Diploma of Commerce so that I may continue to accountancy in order to obtain the PR. However, accountancy is not something I'd like to see myself doing in future. So with the free time I had, I've been thinking and I'm still torn between security and doing the thing I like.

Where are you studying? Which course?

I was told by my mum's travel agent saying that (this is for M'sian Airlines)...... the extra 10KG for students is only when the student is going over for the first time...... after that, its only the usual 20KG :/ ...... though, I'm getting rather confused as each time I travel, there's another rule change and another and another >.>

Perhaps you might want to finish off your current course at the moment, then only go for what you like...... I guess this way, you have something to fall back on and well, keep the old folks happy tongue.gif ..........

/emo ranting mode on

For students, SQ gives a weight limit of 40KGs. Good ol MH only gives out 30KGs doh.gif

/emo ranting mode off

price wise, SQ is just a bit more expensive than MH

My dear I never asked you to bring the blanket/quilts la, what I'm asking you to bring is the sheets/cover for it =P. Roll it up real tight and it'll take up relatively little space. Quilts here though are kinda expensive so be prepared, a good goose down one will be like 200+?

Use daemon tools to rip them to ISO.
