As the world's biggest and richest club, Manchester United reach a global fanbase.

Part of the attraction for fans around the world has been the football luminaries, such as George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton, who have graced the Old Trafford turf in a Manchester United shirt over the years.

Recently, Manchester United have continued to attract or develop some of the game's biggest names, with England stalwarts such as Paul Scholes and David Beckham having been regular fixtures in the Reds line-up.

The Manchester United team, past and present, reads like a who's who of world football.

It is only fitting that a great team should grace a great stadium. And with Old Trafford's recent development and the closure of Wembley, the ground is easily the largest in English football, holding in excess of 60,000 fans.

Despite this capacity, the demand to see United in action is so great that tickets are hard to come by.

But it isn't only Manchester United fans who flock to Old Trafford. The standard of the ground is such that it regularly hosts high-profile games, most notably, the Champions League Final and Great Britain rugby league games.

Rock fans have also made use of the Reds's facilities, watching a number of high-profile acts at the ground.

But it's football that will forever be synonymous with the Reds famous ground - and with good reason.

The last decade has seen Manchester United under the shrewd leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson maintain a virtual stranglehold on the Premiership crown.

Manchester United has won the league no fewer than 18 times in their history. They are also Cup Kings too, winning the FA cup 11 times, the league cup 4 times, as well as winning the European Super Cup, European Cup Winner's Cup, and 3 times being crowned European Cup champions.

Manchester United has long become a name associated with success both on and off the pitch.

As club profits continue to grow, Manchester United have become one of the richest sports clubs on the planet.

With supporters club branches on every continent, it's hard to go any where in the world and not see somebody wearing the famous red shirt of Manchester United.

Hope Alien will sticky this info later.
Though written in 2006 so no Roy Keane yet.

Ex-United players that have moved on to become managers.

Written by Simon Stone (MARCH 22, 2006)

STEVE BRUCE (1987-1996): Took his first steps in management with Sheffield United in 1998, then swiftly moved on to Huddersfield, Wigan and Crystal Palace. Left Selhurst Park in acrimonious fashion after Birmingham targeted him as the replacement for Trevor Francis in 1991. Took Blues into the Premier League but after a heavy FA Cup defeat is struggling to keep his job.

MARTIN POWELL (1971-1983): Stylish and well-respected Scotland centre-half whose authoritative nature appeared to make him a natural for the management game. Lasted four months at Burnley.

SIR BOBBY CHARLTON (1956-1973): Arguably the finest English player of all time proved to be an unmitigated disaster as a manager. Claimed he was not given the resources to make a decent job of it at Preston but was never lured back into management following his departure after a single season.

STEVE COPPELL (1975-1983): After a knee injury cut his playing career short at just 28, Coppell turned his attention to management. Steered Crystal Palace into the FA Cup final and then third place in the old First Division - the Eagles' highest ever - the following season. It was the first of four stints in charge at Selhurst Park in a career which has seen him move to Manchester City (for only six games), Brentford and Brighton. Now at Reading and about to steer the Royals into the top flight for the first time.

PADDY CRERAND (1962-1971): A key figure in United's 1968 European Cup triumph, Crerand lasted five months at Northampton before getting the bullet and, like Charlton, never managed again.

MARK HUGHES (1983-86, 1988-95): Hughes was never tipped as a manager by Ferguson but has taken to the game with ease. Took Wales into the Euro 2004 play-offs. Took over at Blackburn shortly afterwards, steering Rovers away from danger in his first season. Currently in contention for a Champions League spot.

BRIAN KIDD (1967-1974): Another European Cup winner who proved to be a poor manager. Got itchy feet in 1998 after spending seven years as Sir Alex Ferguson's highly-rated assistant. Took command at Blackburn but dismissed six months later.

BRYAN ROBSON (1981-94): United's inspirational leader under Ron Atkinson and Ferguson. There are two schools of thought on his stint at Middlesbrough - he either spent lots and achieved little (relegation and two losing finals) or he laid the platform for the Teessiders to become an established Premiership outfit. Kept West Brom up in extraordinary fashion last year but back in trouble again this season.

GORDON STRACHAN (1984-89): Scotland international who won the FA Cup with United and the title of the pre-Premiership era with Leeds. Sacked after five years at when the Sky Blues lost top-flight status, then enjoyed success at Southampton - reaching the 2003 Cup final - before resigning to spend more time with his family. Now at Celtic, has recovered from a humiliating Champions League exit to Artmedia Bratislava, and, after winning his first trophy on Sunday in the CIS Insurance Cup, is set to clinch the Scottish Premier League.

NOBBY STILES (1960-71): Along with Charlton, one of only two Englishmen to have won the World Cup and European Cup, he replaced his former England and United team-mate at Preston, with limited success. After a brief stint in Vancouver, returned to England to take over as manager of West Brom. Sacked after five months, having gained just three wins.

Much better than "I don't know what else to do. We strive to be like Man City and Liverpool."

Spurs 4 - 0 QPR.

Rio must be thinking why didn't he retire and be a pundit.

The defence lacks cover from the midfield. Cleverley and Fletch drift forward too much. Still not convinced with the 352 formation, oh well. LVG is the boss.

formation can work, but it depends on the team and the opponent too.

at this time the team is not playing with full confidence, slower passing and niggly play won't help. fletcher and cleverley in CM too.. nottttt confidence inspiring.

Need to be flexible. When teams setup to counter it then gotta be ready to change formation as needed. LVG also had to change things a bit at times during the WC, he wasn't using that formation only.

There's a disconnect between the midfield and the wings. It's as if each doesn't know the timing of the other. Overlap and diagonal runs are being done at the wrong opportunities.

Substitute for?

We have no more Cm and CB. Totally paper thin squad.

And we go ahead and spend so much on ADM. Might as well just throw 45m + chicharito to Juve for Vidal in the first place.

Kesian fletcher. For all d hard work coming bak but he seems like a liability. Swansea match he was not good and thus far his first touch in the 1st half were awful. At least half d time he stopped the ball and it goes further creating xtra work for him n loose posession in d middle of the park

I think mata needs to roam around more and be the bridge between midfield to create chances .. The bridge is not there. fletch and clev too weak..

Yeah. Just kasi Milan 10m and sign him over to steady the ship. Kung fu some players who bulldoze our Mata.

Actually consistency is the main issue here that cost us some points. Some of the players played well this week and then the following week doesn't perform.

hopefully the players play higher tempo in the 2nd half.

the first half was painfully slow no thanks to the sideway passings of the obviously slow fletcher n cleverly

imo midfield is the part that is killing the entire team. exposing defenders and not feeding the attacks.

defenders might have flaws, but a stronger midfield would help cover it a bit.

At this point wonder if James would do better than Young, regardless of his inexperience.

need world class defender and midfield who can dominate and control the ball. Young is totally rubbish.

actually defense was quite ok in the 2nd half.

but here lies the problem.

The transition of attacking from def>mid>striker

Especially mid, oh my gawd. Pass right flank, Valencia dribble dribble, pass centre. Centre look up, pass left. Young do some sh1t dancing. Pass centre. Centre looks up, pass backwards. Backwards surge forward, pass either left or right flank.

I screamed "Float the bloody ball to the centre, or cross it" at my TV for no reason just now

So frustrating....

jones, the best player for man utd today. m.keane was okay.

blackett, while his defending is 'okay-ish', his passing was terrible.

cleverly, slow n too much side way passes. dispossessed a couple of times.

fletcher, slower than cleverly n too many mistake

young, horrible defending, too many inaccurate crosses

valencia, quite good going forward, but hesitant to make crosses when he could have.

the front three no comment coz not enough service lol

Since the club is at this position already, I'd rather take the hit and let LVG manage it properly this time.

At least, he won't give stupid post-match interviews.

Biarlah other supporters make fun. Yg penting, we'd slowly and surely come back on top.

We were too used to SAF reign, that's why we cannot tahan this patch of shitty period.

Frankly speaking, I didnt like januzaj playing style even from last season. He performance on-off but usually off. He cannot cross, he shooting either meh. He only good on dribble but still what u can do after u dribble but cannot cross to others.

The 3 behind did just enough for us to not lose .. Not convinced at all , they're still young , hopefully Rojo Evans Jones can do well this season .

Our CM was bad today ( again ) . We don't need di Maria as much as we need a new CM , rather spend the money on good CM .

Attack was meh , mostly due to weak CM . RVP got no supply , Rooney kind of needs to be like 7-8 years ago where he just runs at defenders and shoot .

Valencia Mata Jones was average , others were sub par today . Not sure why Januzaj played as a CM tho , Kagawa would have done a better job , or heck , Rooney .

Anyway , I think this formation is not working out . The only reason I see us doing this is because of Rooney RvP Mata . If we go back to our usual 4-4-2 / 4-4-1-1 , one of them won't get a chance to play .

Cleverley being Cleverley. Hide himself away from the ball. Points towards other players when his teammate tried to play him. Offer nothing during defense. Afraid of taking chances.

Fletcher was almost playing as the lone midfield LEL

I see the same old team like last season. if not worse.. Van Gaal's "philosophy" need to kick in as soon as possible. I don't know how his philosophy will work anyway without any world class CM. Thank god the fixtures are kind to us.. or we'll be getting a nice thrashing by the top teams now.

Xabi Alonso dropped the hint that di Maria is going to man utd afterall

user posted image

Xabi Alonso: "Good luck to Di Maria, even if it is at Man Utd. We will never forget your assistance in Lisbon."

di maria might be able to reignite man utd's attack, but im more concern with the mid and the back.

also,

LVG: ”I like Di Maria, but I also like Messi and Vidal. You can not always sign everyone you like."

"I cannot say anything about transfers. It's not only Di Maria. Maybe Vidal or Messi. We are a big club."

laugh.gif so vidal is still in negotiation. i can only dream, but this might definitely break man utd's bank account lol.

Man Utd must pay British record fee for Argentine

Manchester United will have to pay a British record transfer fee to sign winger Angel Di Maria from Real Madrid.
Real coach Carlo Ancelotti revealed Di Maria, 26, said goodbye to his team-mates ahead of an impending move.
United have been quoted £75m for the Argentine, though they do not expect the final figure to be so high.
However, senior club sources say the fee will "definitely" eclipse the £50m Chelsea paid Liverpool for striker Fernando Torres in 2011.
The Red Devils last broke the British transfer record when they paid Leeds £29.1m for Rio Ferdinand in 2002.
"Di Maria has not trained with us today and he came in to say goodbye to the players and people at the club," said Ancelotti on Sunday.
"There is nothing official yet but it is being sorted out. The decision is his and the club has done what it could to keep him here."
United boss Louis van Gaal is a known admirer of Di Maria, who would become the club's fourth summer signing.
The Old Trafford club have already bought left-back Luke Shaw, midfielder Ander Herrera and Di Maria's Argentina team-mate Marcos Rojo for a combined £72m.
Di Maria was named on the 10-man shortlist for the Fifa player of the tournament at this summer's World Cup, though he injured a thigh in the quarter-final win over Belgium.
He joined Real from Benfica for £36m in 2010, and won La Liga in 2012 and the Champions League last season.
"Personally I don't like it," said former Real president Ramon Calderon. "Normally a club who owns the very good players don't like to sell them."

Transfer news: Manchester United agree £63.9m fee for Real Madrid winger Angel di Maria
Manchester United have concluded negotiations with Real Madrid and will pay a British record £63.9million for winger Angel di Maria, according to Sky sources.

The 26-year-old Argentina international is expected to fly into Manchester on Monday to hold talks with United next week with the hope of being ready to face Burnley at Turf moor next Saturday.

When the transfer is finalised, the fee will be a record in Britain, eclipsing the £50m Chelsea paid for Fernando Torres three years ago.

According to Sky Sports’ Spanish football expert Guillem Balague, United initially offered €60m and Madrid wanted €90m, with the two clubs eventually agreeing on €80m (£63.9m).

any decent passing teams can score against us with our defense like that. proper 'triangle passes' and opponents will have a decent chances.

we are fortunate not to meet the likes of arsenal or city this early. they will rape us.

Why put AJ in the middle when you tested Kagawa in that role during pre-season

Other than that... Def didn't connect well with mid, mid didn't connect well with fw

We need someone who really can connect with def and attack at the same time, cuz I don't see any bridge link to each department, we need some one who can do that.

The problem with playing Carrick like that is he has no pace, and rarely attempts a forward ball. He is better with his passing than Cleverly (10 yards in oppose to 5 yards) however he is what 33 years old and has the same pace as a grandma with a broken zimmer frame. United need someone in the ilk of Vidal or Strootman. (WHY THE HELL DID WE LET CHELSEA SIGN KURT ZOUMA? WHAT WERE YOU THINKING WOODWARD? He'd be a massive step up on our defense)

This game was horrible, I don't want to see young on the pitch anymore, cleverley and Fletcher too. Why the f has van Gaal put januzaj ti play number 8 Role?? Why is he insisting with 3-5-2 when the only ten minutes we played well we Used four defenders? For Now I don't think he is doing better than moyes, he takes excuses before the games, while moyes did it after, I am not seeing anything better.

How the club can think of wasting 60 million on De Maria is beyond me. We need to get a top quality midfielder in (Vidal) and get shot of Cleverley, he is absolutely hopeless. The defence is going to get slaughtered against the top clubs. If Van Gaal persists on using this system he needs to get defenders in this week who know how to play that way.

fellana out also. any idea when carrick will return? badly need him now

kagawa arent bad at all under SAF. tht time also his 1st season only. if SAF still around i'm sure he will get more chance to flourish as no 10. SAF probably foreseen him and roon turn sour so he need backup. but yeah now tht we hv mata probably best selling him before his value decreased

looking at how thing goes LVG still experiment.. giving chances to all players.

To those who are still asking why LVG boycott Kagawa,

QUOTE
The Dutchman also appeared to have no regrets about leaving Shinji Kagawa out of his starting XI. “Kagawa did not wish to fulfil my wishes, my philosophy when I played him in the United States [on pre-season tour],” he said.

SOS

If all 3 managers (SAF,DM, LVG) doesn't start Kagawa frequently, surely there is something wrong with him. To me, Kagawa is overrated and lazy. Nuff said. I am still in awe that there is no buyer for him yet.

sorry, just wanna chip in on kagawa case, but i think kagawa is suffering what Couthino did when he was in Milan. Talented but dunno what to do with him until he met someone who truly know how to use him and develop him. It's best to sell him to some club who really value him then wasted his talents in your club.

If you ask me, our team is blessed with attacking talents.

RVP, one of the most clinical finisher in the game. Mata, one of the best CAM in the game. Rooney, one of the most temperamental hardworking forward in the game. With Di Maria joining the fray, I don't see why we are not scoring goals at will? The problem lies with the central midfield and wingers (before ADM). Young can't cross ffs, Valencia is still a one-footed pony but his workrates are good.

The CM post has been our weaklink since Scholes retired. Til today, no improvements. Not sure how much of an impact Herrera will bring but he needs time to adapt judging by his first game.

I know this sounds a bit nuts but i think United should revert back to a 4-4-2/4-2-2-2 hybrid but the deal is though Rvp would be up top and Rooney slightly deeper, then put Di Maria(true winger) on the right and put Mata(false Winger) on the Left but he has a free role to move around the whole field besides staying on the left (sort of like the kagawa role but with less restrictions) My GOD we need Hererra back clevs doesn't have the confidence right now and fletcher isn't playing the best right now. The system shows we need a midfield destroyer next to herrera or clevs ( i know) De jong seems like a legit option right now and then get strootman in January. Defence will be back considering Rojo doesn't have work permit and Shaw is coming back so not to worried about that yet

Conclusion, 3-5-2 never work for EPL fast pace.
go back 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3.

With maria sister joining man utd, the only formation that suit him will be 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3.
So expecting LVG revert back to 4-3-3.

yeap. not to mention, man utd's tendency to buy multiple players playing no 10 role, and none in the mids.

the extremely mediocre mids cost man utd 5 points becoz there's a disconnect between the defense and the forwards. the strikers are not getting the services they required.

he's okay, but not great. man utd need to sell their mediocre players like cleverly, welbeck, ando, chicharito etc.

the rest of the premier league has stepped up after our 20th premier league trophy. we won simply because the rest of the premier league teams were mediocre. but not anymore. chelsea for example has been excellent in their recent transfer captures. liverpool, after a shaky first season under BR, has matured. Man City's original 11 has always been top notch since last season.

we can no longer play the same mediocre team.

last season was a shame. remember how we over relied on januzaj? man utd team, 20 times premier league champion, relying on a kid to save the campaign? laugh.gif

We still need to keep some mediocre players as backup.

Imagine if Welbeck and Chicarito leaves, what happen when RvP or Rooney is out injured?

We can sell one of them, I think we need to retain Welbeck as he is more mobile and adaptable. Furthermore, English.

The squad is wafer thin. Shaw, Valencia, Rafael previously all injured. Rojo no work permit. Reece James not starting most likely because LVG don't want both Blackett and James starting on the left side of defense. Too inexperience and raw.

Understand the squad before criticizing.

i still trust the system. no system is perfect. but good system always need a suitable set of players.

di maria will not improve us tremendously. he's an upgrade, but at the expanse of the likes of kagawa and januzaj.

biggest holes are obviously on cm and cb, while both side fullbacks occupied by make-shift players (valencia and young)

wordward spent on wrong 'furniture'. di maria are great buy, only if another class cm also on board.

Almost having heart attack watching the game last night..poor2 performance by Young and Cleverly, defending looks uncomfortable most of the time and the lack of wing player that can truly cross has truly affects our scoring chances..

Young is starting because of his impressive transformation in pre-season.

Thought in EPL I also cannot tahan. Still, we need to keep him for now. If Young goes in the next few days, who else can take up the wing position with our injuries.

Cleverly also won't be sold for now because of injuries too. Most likely January kick him out to Sunderland.

maria come also can't fully address the problems in the team now.

Young: damn, worked my head off during pre-season and i'm in the starting XI. so now relek liao. smile.gif)

I think 3-5-2 works if you have a blardy solid midfield, which we dont have. and super 3 at the back. which we dont have. and we are playing 3-5-2. swell.

Agreed.
we should revert back to 433 or 4231.
But i think Rooney will push to right side if use 433 or 4231

Di Maria, RVP, Rooney
Mata
Herrera, De Jong
Shaw, Rojo, Jones, Rafael

*
A lot of attacking talents, most of the midfield and defence, freaked up. sweat.gif

QUOTE(limjenson @ Aug 25 2014, 12:28 PM)
The squad is wafer thin. Shaw, Valencia, Rafael previously all injured. Rojo no work permit. Reece James not starting most likely because LVG don't want both Blackett and James starting on the left side of defense. Too inexperience and raw.

Understand the squad before criticizing.

in the meantime we gotta hold on~~~

All i can think of is that..
Defence:Lack of experiences&too young.
Midfield:Not helping
Attack:Not firing.

Starting to think this is what we've to play, but Helela will get smashed though.. laugh.gif
I'm 100% confident that if Strootman isn't injured,we'll get him,he'll be playing in that role instead of Herrera. nod.gif

352 working well only if the wing-back purely is a defender (primary position) that convert to wing attack (secondary position).
If it is purely a wing attack (primary position) that convert to defender (secondary position), it won't work.

To those who are still asking why LVG boycott Kagawa,
SOS

If all 3 managers (SAF,DM, LVG) doesn't start Kagawa frequently, surely there is something wrong with him. To me, Kagawa is overrated and lazy. Nuff said. I am still in awe that there is no buyer for him yet.
*
Wah habis la... anytime a player rebels vs the manager tactics like that, confirm no future unless he begs forgiveness. He was amazing at BVB, but for whatever reason 3 managers have refused to give him an extended run in the #10 role he played over there. He can't (or won't) do well in other positions. Looks like time to sell is nearing.

i still trust the system. no system is perfect. but good system always need a suitable set of players.

di maria will not improve us tremendously. he's an upgrade, but at the expanse of the likes of kagawa and januzaj.

biggest holes are obviously on cm and cb, while both side fullbacks occupied by make-shift players (valencia and young)

wordward spent on wrong 'furniture'. di maria are great buy, only if another class cm also on board.
*
Well given that Kagawa has failed to nail a starting spot, and Januzaj has been hot and cold (young player, cannot expect super consistency)... it's definitely an upgrade.

Only issue is the CM position is the one SCREAMING for upgrades.

Seems a lot of people are panicking about the formation not working.

Take it easy wei.. With a CM of Cleverley and Fletcher in this kinda form, ANY formation also will have issues. 4-4-2 you will puke blood. More to the point 4-4-2 then see Young and Valencia as wingers still puke. And since Shaw is injured and Rojo can't play, Rafael also hasn't been back yet for minutes.. gonna open alternative problems (including how to fit Mata + Rooney + RVP at the same time)

Trust LVG to figure it out, he said time and patience is needed smile.gif

So, no Vidal then. Give Vidal to Arsenal lah brows.gif

I'm wondering tho, since united are playing 3-5-2 now, where do you guys think di Maria would play?
No way he will be used as wing back. The one position that I can think of is CAM. But you already have Mata and Kagawa for that? hmm.gif

It was a frustrating draw and naturally we would be trying to pinpoint the faults from our play. but lets look at the positives:

- blackett did a convincing job at the back, mainly coz sunderland had a proper winger on the right, Will. he's also getting more confident in playing the ball up the left side into oppo half
- Valencia, imo, is the current best rwb in our squad. good on tracking back and defensive duties although his marking for set pieces lead to the oppo goal.
- Mata worked harder and better than the swansea game. can see him on the ball more eventhough was just a pass and go.
- adnan replaced fletch and he was comfortable with the role. did a good job to make quick passes. only time i saw both CMs just outside oppo penalty box, press oppo into their own box.

-it's an away game and its better to get 1 pts than nothing.
-players are still new to the system, they will master it eventually.
-we still have carrick, evans, hererra, rojo to come into the team
-if signed, Di Maria will give further boost to attack line

So keep the faith guys smile.gif

Powell is more to CAM/FW. he was plating CAM with his lower division club and when on loan with Wigan, i believe he play fw role. he's got good height and an eye for goals but bit slow body movement. so cant really compare these 2 la..

there was this 2nd deal that man utd offered to Juve for Vidal, which is 40mil euro + 1 unknown player. this unknown player, contrary to earlier reports, is not chicharito, but instead kagawa.

so dunno lah. i also pening kepala where will di maria gonna play. obviously he wont be playing as wing back because he is not capable to defend. take a look at young, a winger but playing as wing back. his defending is atrocious, with lots of mistackles and poor man marking during set pieces.

if di maria gonna play robben role, 1 of the striker (rooney or persie) might have to be dropped, or rooney replacing mata as the AM.

Jones praises young charges

http://www.manutd.com/en/News-And-Features...C2-14510BCD3D0C

QUOTE
After Chris Smalling became the latest player to join the Manchester United injury list on Sunday, Phil Jones praised deputies Mike Keane and Tyler Blackett, who both produced solid performances at Sunderland.
Manchester-born Blackett, starting his second successive Barclays Premier League game, impressed and was joined on the field by fellow youth-team graduate Keane after Smalling was forced off just before half-time.

Jones, who himself led by example at the heart of the defence, was keen to praise the young duo following the 1-1 draw with the Black Cats.

"Both of them did a really great job," the Reds’ no.4 told MUTV. "Tyler looked very comfortable and Mike came on and did equally well. Defensively they were very good."

"It’s not what we want [defensive injuries mounting] but these things happen and we’ve just got to adapt and move on."

Damn. After watching yesterday's game against Sunderland, 3 things are painfully obvious....

1) A defence comprising of Valencia, Jones, Smalling and Blackett is going to be smashed into pieces by ANY TEAM in the Premiership currently. We got Rojo and Shaw, but unfortunately they can't play.... now we need is Blind and De Jong. Get it done, Woodward!

2) Midfield of Cleverly + Fletcher? You got to be kidding me. OK, I understand the injuries, but come on... it is one of the WORST pairing at the moment. Sunderland was just plowing through them like they weren't there. And Young... sigh. Should have just started with Januzaj.....

Oh yeah, Di Maria = GET HIM. NOW!

3) Rooney = captain? Uh, no. RVP seemed better. And that's even after his WC adventure, he STILL did more than what Rooney had done the entire match.

He is quoted by Voetball International: "No one came out and played combination football. For that you need a high ball speed, but that is difficult when you play with one of Viergever and Blind in midfield. Both of which are not fast enough and technically in order to accelerate."

commentator mentioned that we looked like a flat 5 instead of 3 central defenders, which i believe all fans noted. valencia and young's position looked like fullbacks, should have went up higher up the pitch imo. anyway, we should be patient smile.gif interesting week ahead.

Everyone on the pitch yesterday was afraid to take chances. In the end, it was a 19 years old who got the balls to muster a shot outside penalty box.

The captain was the worst of the lot. Couldn't beat a defender, first touch like an amateur, no defense splitting passing ability. He offered almost nothing.

That's a crazy loads of money if true.
So, no Vidal then. Give Vidal to Arsenal lah brows.gif

I'm wondering tho, since united are playing 3-5-2 now, where do you guys think di Maria would play?
No way he will be used as wing back. The one position that I can think of is CAM. But you already have Mata and Kagawa for that? hmm.gif

Harapan.. flex.gif flex.gif

He played as a CM for RM last season with Xabi Alonso and Modric IINM. hmm.gif

When rooney was set free on the counter yesterday, he couldnt beat even one man and lost the ball. The commentator then mentioned about the difference between lvg holland and lvg united is robben. We saw how devastating he can be in the world cup on the counter attack. Perhaps di maria can be that player, theres none in our team who can do that at the moment.

All it does is raise costs for all buyers eventually. Either the jersey itself, or shipping pricing/class that is used.

he mentioned the "flat 5" issue too many times until the main commentator shuts him off by saying "you can see that, LVG can see that but why it is still the same"
and he replied saying valencia and young needs to cover the 3 young cb's from sunderland's counter attack and utd does not have a commanding cb. there you go.. you answered it yourself.. it is already obvious we have 3 young CB's playing and are prone to counter attack, that is why valencia and young are not being too adventurous.

LVG can afford to smile.. players are still getting used to his tactic.. new players are coming..give some time la..these commentators sometimes are really annoying shakehead.gif

Van Gaal: Kagawa not buying into my philosophy

QUOTE
Louis van Gaal said Shinji Kagawa does not want to play his brand of football as he explained the Japan international's absence from the Manchester United team so far this season.
Kagawa has been an unused substitute in both league games, even though Van Gaal has had what he called the worst injury crisis of his managerial career, with nine players sidelined and new signing Marcos Rojo ineligible to debut in United's 1-1 draw at Sunderland.
The Dutchman tried to play Kagawa as one of his two central midfielders during United's pre-season tour of the United States. But he said in his news conference at the Stadium of Light: "Kagawa did not wish to fulfil my wishes, my philosophy when I played him in the United States."
Juan Mata has been operating in Kagawa's preferred position behind the strikers and Van Gaal explained in July: "Kagawa was a No.10 at [Borussia] Dortmund but I want to try him at No. 6 and No. 8."
But while United have made a slow start under Van Gaal, collecting a solitary point from their first two league games, Robin van Persie believes the results will soon come.
Van Persie told Sky Sports: "I worked with him for two years, and he's very clear. He's clear in what he asks of each player in the team every day. So, where I can, I will help the other players.
"I think that everyone has faith and everyone believes in the staff and players. We have great players, and it's just a matter of time before the points will start coming in."

Well that explains kagawa's absence....

their first half was a bit shaky though, but man city played better in the 2nd half except for the last 10 mins or so in normal time.

anyways,

di maria was seen with his entourage en route to United's Carrington training ground. a deal worth 59mil pounds have been reportedly agreed upon, way less than the rumored 75mil.

in another potential united transfer news, man utd scouts were spotted during PSV vs Ajax match, presumably for Daley Blind. which makes me question the purchase of Luke Shaw in the first place lol

just get de jong and we're good for the first half of the season.

Shaw is overpriced to start with. Now we have a specialized winger, where are we playing him? There's no second winger to play wide both sides. (valencia?)put him upfront and drop rooney back with all the gazillion no.10s?

I think if Blind really join us, he will be placed at midfield until Carrick is return. As Blind playing at midfield position for Ajax almost the whole of last season and took the player of the year.

I think it's unfair to judge Smalling-Jones-Blackett for now. They are relatively young and inexperienced let alone playing in an unfamiliar formation with scarce defensive cover from midfield leaving them exposed and vulnerable. I felt that Jones should tone down on his attacking and focus on staying behind because he is always leaving gaps at the back and his position was all over the place.

Awaiting for Rojo to play and add some steel to the back rclxm9.gif

LVG most probably waiting to get his cm man before changing from 352 to 433. the back 3 should be LCB=Rojo, centre CB= Evans, RCB= Jones

Somehow, I feel more secured with Blackett playing than with Smalling playing.

Keane - Jones - Blackett seems more solid than Jones - Smalling - Blackett.

Wonder if it's just me alone.

Keane - Jones - Blackett seems more solid than Jones - Smalling - Blackett.

Wonder if it's just me alone.

Agreed with you.
Blackett smart and quick. can attack also... Smalling is small. haha

Yup. Smalling is still a nervous wreck to me. Probably will develop more over time but he seems uncomfortable at the centre-right position, as always. I think he suits the centre role better due to his height

well seems like Maria is pretty much near unveiling.... so.... unless someone coups him away.

Oh Garay... I wished we bought him instead. If we can land on Blind that'll be a HUGE plus. Sorry to say, Vida and Rio combo is just too imba. The current CBs can't compete with them at all.

Our wonder kid shaw? overpriced, and injured liao =(

No one want free Ando? tongue.gif Nani is gone now, left Ando, ?tony V, thatkid, and cleverly. And Cleverly. And Young.

i can see LVG is going for 4-3-3 formation with the purchase of Di Maria.
just get Nigel De Jong for our DM and Shawcross our former old boy as our CB.
*
Share the same opinion on that.

Share the similar formation as RM is doing currently but I really wonder how they gonna fit all the players just bought together.

Front 3
Mata - RVP - Rooney

Mid 3
Di Maria - Carrick/Vidal/Strootman - Herrera

Back 4
Shaw - Rojo - Jones - Rafael

Where will Young/Valencia gonna play?
I assume Cleverly/Kagawa/Anderson/Welbeck to be shipped out within this few days.

btw. ESPNFC quoting that we are focusing on Vidal. If that's gonna happen...... rclxms.gif brows.gif our general is coming. + maria and existing RVP, mata, Roo, Carrick, I think 3-5-2 is possible. Well, like you said, back 3 would be the problem.

Feels like another desperate move from last season ; overpriced Fellaini , mata when we have Rooney & Kagawa as #10 .

If its true that we will get Di Maria , I don't think we will sign any more high profile players or we'll end up like city few seasons back ..

I think the other way:
4-3-3 OR 4-2-3-1

4-2-3-1 (Attack)
RVP
Di Maria - Mata - Rooney
Herrera - Carrick/Vidal/Strootman
Shaw - Rojo - Jones - Rafael

4-3-3 (Defend)
Di Maria - RVP - Rooney
Herrera - Mata - Carrick/Vidal/Strootman
Shaw - Rojo - Jones - Rafael

with the purchase of adm, I think lvg will experiment with 3412/433. Di maria (winger) has proven that he can play as a cm like how he did last season with Alonso. This is when the term "universality" kicks in. Lvg is a smart man and we all know it. He has his reasons behind the di maria purchase.

Agreed with you.
Better than Moyes x100 times.
Moyes shouldn't spend 37.5M pound on Mata, i knew Mata is good, but we already have kagawa at first place.
And failing to sign 2 center-back is moyes biggest mistake.
Tactical wise also vomit blood.

Kagawa and Mata is both useless under Moyes due to his flat 4-4-2 formation that he favors. Both Kagawa and Mata is inefficient on the wing.

players have to embrace "universality". There's no such thing as playing out of position anymore. That's modern football. The ability to rotate and also play other positions. This is why lvg said it takes time for his philosophy because its not easy. It's a transformation.. This is also one of the main reasons why lvg only buys players that can fit in his philosophy because they can fit straight in unlike others which will take time for them to adapt.

hi mate...

I had been to old trafford for a match late last season but changed my mind. Why should I watch a so called mid table team and spending thousand for ticket. LOL!

But I did my research well prior to my trip. The best bet you can get a match ticket is tru man utd website. but you have to be official member. 1 member can buy only 1 tickets. If you going with family or other persons, they have to register as official member as well.

Another method, you may buy those VIP seats in MU web as well. It normally comes with pre or post match meal or something. That gonna cost you a little bit more than above methods.

Last method I found was to buy from 3rd party agent. MAke sure you find the reliable one, otherwise you would get your ticket. This way, you do not need to be a man utd membership but you pay a little extra. The best of this method is you can buy good seating position in the stadium to get maximum match experience.

Hope it helps.

3412 more likely
if 433 either RVP benched or Rooney benched.
Unless Rooney willing to sacrifice by playing in midfield (which he was very reluctant)

meanwhile Benatia to Bayern is done. €26m + €4m add-ons = the €30m Roma wanted for the player.

Angel Di Maria to Manchester United: Winger was once sold for 35 footballs - now it's £60m

When the winger, who used to work in a coal yard with the rest of his family, was transferred as a youngster, the fee was not much to shout about.

By PAUL SMITH
Monday 25 August 2014

Britain’s most expensive player Angel Di Maria will cost Manchester United a staggering £60m – a sum that somewhat dwarfs the first transfer fee the 26-year-old commanded: 35 footballs.

Di Maria, one of three children born to Miguel and Diana, grew up in the city of Perdriel in the Mendoza district of west Argentina. He was obsessed with football and spent every waking hour taking to the streets with friends in his neighbourhood. When scouts from Rosario Central first spotted him there was a minor issue as he was already committed to playing for the local side Torito.

“They drove a hard bargain to release me,” recalled Di Maria. “The transfer fee was 35 footballs. That probably puts into perspective where I was and how much it took to get me. Mind you I was very young, about four so I’m not sure it really counts.”

Mind you, the hyperactive youngster was lucky to make it past his first birthday. The family had moved to a new home which was falling apart and Di Maria fell down a well in the garden. “My mother always recalls the story,” Di Maria added. “I was a year old and had a baby walker and went outside and fell into a well. I was lucky because they saved me in time otherwise I wouldn’t be here to talk about it.”

That was the first of many incidents that prompted Di Maria’s mother to take him to a doctor because she was concerned there might be something wrong with him. However, he believes it was the start of his career in the game.

“My mother got tired of me breaking everything in the house so she took me to see a doctor when I was three. I was running around the examination room breaking everything. The doctor just said ‘Sign him up for a sport’ and that is where my career began.”

Growing up in relative poverty has taught Di Maria to appreciate the finer things in life. “I had a humble upbringing and grew up playing on the streets of Perdriel. We didn’t have much. Our house was small and I shared a room with my sister. But I don’t feel angry. There are people who are a lot worse off. My values come from my upbringing. Humility, to become someone in life. My childhood was about having enough to eat, having the bare necessities.

“My parents worked so they could earn enough to buy me a pair of football boots. It’s something I will always keep inside me. For me to play football and have boots meant my two sisters went without.

“My father worked at a coal yard with my mother. It was a horrible existence and when the weather was bad all they had was a metal roof over their heads. But both me and my sisters worked at the coal yard as well. I started aged 10 and by the time I was 15 I was helping with deliveries. It was hard work.

“I often think how lucky I am to have football. I was a terrible student. If I didn’t have football I would have continued to work in the coal yard. What else would I have done?

“My father worked at that coal yard for 16 years until I made him give up work when I joined Benfica. It was nice to be in a position to be able to do that and say ‘Dad, you don’t have to do this any more’.

“I was heartbroken for my father because he could have played football but got a serious knee injury playing for River Plate reserves. My mother always reminds me how lucky I am and that I am doing what my father wanted to do, I am living his dream.

“None the less he is a very kind and wise man. Family means everything to him and I feel blessed that I am now in a position to repay him and my family and make sure they don’t have to struggle. My father made so many sacrifices for me. I will always remember what he said when Benfica made a bid for me: ‘Son, this train only passes by once in a lifetime so you have to get on and go forward.’"

Di Maria’s mother also made sacrifices for her son. “When I began to play for Rosario Central when I was six it took us 30 minutes to get to the training ground,” he added. “She took me on a bicycle, three of us on that bike. I would sit on the back and my younger sister would sit on a seat on the handlebars and my mother would ride the bike. It was hard during winter. Can you believe we did this for seven years?

“My mother is religious too. She is the one who blesses me and gives me strength before games. She lights candles for me before every game. Religion is important for all of us. My wife, Jorgelina, also lights candles for God to bless me and look over me.”

On the field Di Maria has a reputation for being a relentless runner with extraordinary stamina. “I have frequently left the field when an opponent asks where I get the strength to run so much. But I have always been the same, it’s just the way I am. I never stop running.

“I’m very focused, rarely get emotional. I think I have only ever cried once in my career when I got injured playing for Argentina in the semi-final of the Under-20 World Cup against Chile. I was heartbroken to miss the final and wouldn’t wish that on anyone. Naturally I get goosebumps in big games but in general I don’t let emotion give way to weakness.

“I like to think I have given my family back something by buying them houses and gifts. Hopefully I will be able to continue doing that until my career ends.” With his cut of the transfer fee, he will.

players have to embrace "universality". There's no such thing as playing out of position anymore. That's modern football. The ability to rotate and also play other positions. This is why lvg said it takes time for his philosophy because its not easy. It's a transformation.. This is also one of the main reasons why lvg only buys players that can fit in his philosophy because they can fit straight in unlike others which will take time for them to adapt.

should've elaborated more, my bad. i think the reason why he's using 3 at the back is bcoz he knows we dun have the CMs to win the battles in the middle of the park, hence the extra men at the backline. so, i'm guessing if we do get a strootman or a vidal in the middle, we would revert to a 4-3-3.

back to the question of doubt against Smalling, i then mentioned that the back three should be Jones, Evans and Rojo, with smalling and blackett as backups smile.gif

Evans back for Dons encounter

Very good news, keep them coming back yo! rclxms.gif

QUOTE
Jonny Evans is in line to make his first appearance of the season in the Capital One Cup tie at MK Dons on Tuesday night.
The Northern Ireland international impressed on the pre-season tour of the United States but sat out the opening Barclays Premier League fixtures against Swansea City and Sunderland due to a leg injury.

After missing the end of last season with a foot problem, the centre-back is making a timely return and will be an experienced option for manager Louis van Gaal.

The Reds ended the 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light with Mike Keane, Tyler Blackett and Phil Jones in the middle after Chris Smalling was forced off with a groin problem.

With Smalling missing the trip to Milton Keynes and Marcos Rojo still awaiting his work permit, Evans will add some nous and steel to the backline for the encounter with the League One outfit.

Keane eager to stake claim

Mike Keane says nerves are a thing of the past for him as he aims to stake his claim with a fourth outing in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday.
The defender made his Barclays Premier League bow as a substitute in the 1-1 draw at Sunderland after his other three appearances came in the League Cup. If selected for the trip to MK Dons, the 20-year-old will aim to show Louis van Gaal he is capable of pushing for a place this season after impressive loan moves in the Championship.

"Obviously, I'm used to playing against men now," he told MUTV. "I've been playing in the league for a good year-and-a-half and am used to that. I am also used to playing for points in every game and knowing what the games mean to the fans, players and staff.

"I'm getting used to the crowds, too. I don't get really nervous playing in front of big crowds any more. Obviously, I get a bit of nerves before the game but, once I start playing, I'm fine. Going on loan helps with that.

"You just get excited, really. Maybe, a couple of years ago, I got a bit nervous but it turns into excitement and you look forward to the game.

"I've played three times already in the competition and, to be fair, I love it. It's when I get my chance so hopefully I will again on Tuesday. United want to win every game in every competition and, if I get a chance and do really well, you never know, I might get thrown in for the next game in the Premier League.
