guys... im in a dilemma,

currently my gear is nex 5r, sigma 30mm f28 and kit lens 1650.

now im not sure whether should i get SEL16f2.8 or not for landscaping purpose. ive done some look around at flickr and none of the beautiful shot requires f2.8.

im still new to this. please help me.

You're right. None of the landscape shots requires f2.8, except for maybe shooting the Milky Way. But it's not something bad to have. You can't find a 16mm lens built specifically for the e-mount whose aperture starts at F8.0 anyway. But the SEL16F28 can be closed down to F8.0....

Ehhhhhh?

Then ini apa?

Taken from my A6000. Apparently all Nex cams *capable* of bulb need to be in M-mode, single drive shooting before you can access bulb.

Or you can buy a cheapo IR remote to get there instantly... and take pics without the shake of pressing your cam in bulb (maybe the timer would work there). Or you could use the smartphone remote - if you have enough battery for your phone.

Oh, and IMHO get the Sigma 19mm over the SEL16 for landscapes. It's much sharper across the frame and cheaper too (400 new).

If the Sig19's not wide enough for you, get the Samyang 12mm But that one's a bit more exp (1.2k) and manual focus only. But it's almost as good as the Zeiss Touit 12 so that's that.

Unless you need the pancake-ness of the SEL16, in which case the SEL20 is better in every way.

When we say "cobra" we mean Quick Shift Bounce - Sony's term for the rotating mechanism introduced with the HVL-F58AM, appearing on the F58AM/F43AM/F60M/F43M.

It appears not to be Quick Shift Bounce, from this:

Not true, both my NEX-5R and A6000 has bulb mode.
But you do not need bulb mode to photograph milky way/stars.
Below are the milky way and star trails taken with Sony NEX-5R + Sigma 19mm F2.8 lens.

Did you take Sigma 19? I'm using that. Besides that, what's wrong with stopping down?

DPreview are idiots and always try to mislead people and will boost any company that pays them to market.

and milkyway cam be shot even with 15sec @ F2.8... in fact, try avoid 30sec... earth rotation in 30sec is obvious, instead of dots of stars, u get lines(dash) of starts.

and even my first generation nex3 has bulb mode.

Samyang has 16mm up to 12mm prime lenses but like I said the 12mm is the best of the bunch - small, fast (f2) and sharp. Only issue is MF but you don't really need AF for landscapes now you know.

edpaul But star trails are so pwetty wei.

Sifus. some noob question on wide angle for NEX. Is it necessary to have AF for wide angle lens (12mm).

no matter short or long zoom length, big or small aperture... the question is actually direct back to you, do you need AF? can you cope with MF?

some event shooter rely on AF... some event shooter rather shoot MF. so its a personal thing. if you shoot wide(12mm) for like wedding, if you do not know how to operate MF well, then u definitely will need AF....

my own 2 cent is always good to have AF, since u can switch to MF anytime..... if u get a MF lens, u cant mod it to AF.

Thanks. was looking for budget wide angle lens and mostly this budget ones are manual focus. Search some from google and few mention MF is enough.
looking at your reason, i have to rethink again my options.
