All engines are Dual VVT-i units, so it looks like we won’t be getting the US-market’s Valvematic engine. The 1.8 litre 2ZR-FE does 139 PS at 6,400 rpm and 173 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm, while the 2.0G and 2.0V use the 3ZR-FE, producing 145 PS at 6,200 rpm and 187 Nm of torque at 3,600 rpm. Both engines are mated to a seven-speed CVT gearbox with sports sequential shift, but only the 2.0V model gets paddle shifters. Both engines use an EPS steering system.

The specs of the 2.0 engine’s gearbox looks similar to the outgoing Corolla Altis. Curiously, the 1.8 litre model’s gearbox seems more advanced than the 2.0’s gearbox – it has a variable ratio for the reverse gear as well – 2.604 to 1.680 – whereas the 2.0 model has a fixed reverse gear of 1.668.

As for forward ratios, the 1.8 litre model’s gearbox has gear ratios of 2.480 to 0.396 with a 5.356 final drive, while the 2.0 litre engine’s gearbox specs are 2.396 to 0.428 with a 5.182 final drive.

The 1.8E and 2.0G model uses halogen projector headlamps while the 2.0V gets an upgrade to LED projector headlamps with daytime running lights and auto leveling. There are no auto headlamp or auto wiper function for all models. The 2.0V is further differentiated on the exterior with a smoked front grille, while the other cars have a chrome finish.

On the interior, the 1.8E and 2.0G get ‘standard’ trim finishing while the 2.0V gets something called ‘Cyber Carbon.’ Features exclusive to the 2.0V include keyless entry and start, cruise control, black leather seats, and an eight-way adjustable power seat for the driver.

The 2.0G and 2.0V get a seven-inch 2-DIN head unit with a touchscreen and reverse camera, while the 1.8E makes do with a regular 2-DIN head unit with a CD player. Navigation is an optional upgrade for the touchscreen head unit. Aircon is a single-zone unit as standard, and so are steering wheel audio controls.

In terms of safety, only the 2.0V variant gets VSC stability control and traction control. ABS is standard, and so are two airbags and ISOFIX points.

The specs are actually pretty interesting because thanks to the lighter kerb weight and more advanced gearbox, the Corolla Altis 1.8E actually has a top speed that’s 5km/h higher as well as 0 to 100km/h acceleration that’s 0.2 seconds faster than either of the 2.0 litre models. Fuel efficiently will likely be better as well. If you don’t need the extra equipment that the 2.0 models offer, it might be a better buy, but then again it lacks VSC stability control.

What a shitty car with some of the worst specs ever. First time see 1.8 variant that actually has better speed over 2.0 variant. Well done Toyota

It's a nice car indeed. Initially we shortlisted this car as my wife likes it, particularly the appearance and good looks. This new Altis is IMO the best-looking model out of the bunch of Toyota sedans. The new Vios although much better looking than the old Vios does not look as good as this Altis. The Camry also does not look as sporty as this Altis.

Unfortunately, I do think the price is quite a bit of a letdown. THe 1.8 at RM115k is quite a bit overpriced if compared to the competition. The 2.0 at RM125k only comes with fabric seats and not fully-specced features, and the 2.0 full spec that is selling for RM137k is too much. It's still a desirable car to own though, if the prices are about RM15k cheaper.

When i was at Taiwan, i saw their 1.8 version come with smart entry and push start button together with 17inch rim. So, UMW is a big big let down in Malaysia, not Toyota

well, after you post the photo from the showroom in thailand... i guess it is not full spec cos dont have fog lamp... anyway, another car similar to vios... looks nice in their website and brochure... but when its on the road, er hemm... well, maybe it is just me...

That's nice of you, but disappointed in the sense that the Australians got the better design than us in Malaysia.
The design that they get are close to the Concept Corolla Altis that was featured previously.

Which is why I'm disappointed and yet they have a 6 Speed Manual for the S spec Corolla Altis which is identical to the Concept car.

i tested the Mazda 3 1.6HB last weekend, love the steering feedback, feels somewhat like 320i but really bumpy ride

and 1.6 is tad underpowered, feels like it has a heavy body, slightly reluctant to accelerate even if you floor it... and the engine is quite loud if you floor it

Its actually sad that Toyota Malaysia still hasnt made Stability Control a standard feature across all its models. Even the current Preve as it as standard. And the funny thing is that many Malaysians still do not even know what is VSC and its importance. They dont even bother than Toyota is now one of the few car manufacturers still stuck in giving 3 years warranty. So Toyota laughs all the way to the bank.

1. Either Altis got no problem and nice to drive. Nothing to highlight or shout about or

2. Altis is for uncles and majority don't know what lowyat.net is.. Only know Low Yat sells IT gadgets or

Actually the interior of Altis is much better now. Just that the digital clock and the buttons at the steering is hmmmm. Other than that quite classy I would say.

I lengthen the remote tie n has reduced knocking now. Still it is a design overlook.

Another design fault is the shiny stripes across the cliff panel and gear surround, reflect sun light like mad under hot sun.

few days ago, I saw a Altis with yellowish headlight.. Got the DRL in yellow..

Am I correct or did I see wrongly?

That's 1.8G. No DRL, but maybe he opens position light so looks like DRL. Yellow like Mazda CX5's DRL.

May I ask your impressions on the Altis 1.8. Is it a quiet car as claimed which is free from wind and road noise? THe suspension is fairly quiet as well when going over bad-surfaced roads, and the Super CVT provides a smooth and jerkless drive when accelerating from standstill? Is the engine fairly quiet during acceleration?

As for the fabric seats, are they fairly thick and comfortable? May I ask what is your benchmark ie. the vehicles you have driven, currently driving or owned, when you are describing on the performance of the new Altis?

I would appreciate your thoughts. Personally from The Star review of the new Altis 2.0V, I think it is a good sedan, though at a price tag of RM138k it does appear to be quite overpriced in my book. The 1.8 although quite bare in features at a more "down-to-earth" price looks more attractive.

Quite a lot of Altis on the road, compared to M3.
