Paper is heavy. At any rate, you can buy a 500 piece stack for around 3. And
quite frankly, all you need to bring are things to settle you down. The rest can be bought; it is not too expensive if you shop smartly.

One thing which I think I should mention to people with regards to laptops. The issue of where to buy laptops (and to quite frank, anything electronic  and expensive such as dSLRs etc) were discussed before, but I did not point out what could be the turning point: Warranty.

If you are here for one year, then buy them from Malaysia. The international warranty will cover you (most manufacturers offer one year international warranty), although trying to claim the warranty could be a pain in the butt.

If you will be here for longer, then buy them from the UK. Sure, its pricier, but think about it. You'd usually be able to get three year (local UK) warranties, and you don't need to suffer the hassle (price-wise, for courier expenses which can be very very expensive; and time wise especially). If you will be here for your entire course, this option is well worth looking at.

I am not familiar with Dell actually. Well actually, yes thank you for reminding me. Some manufacturers do allow you to pay more for an extended international warranty but it has to be done within a certain time frame of purchase. I do not recall the price but I think it is a couple of hundred ringgit or something.

There is another problem though. Some of the UK dealers would try to avoid accepting liability for international warranties - they really beat around the bush when my friend's laptop's hard drive failed on him, telling him that he should contact Malaysia, that it wasn't their business etc. It took him a few months just to get that problem fixed.

And if you buy it here, you get to get your hands on some of the newest models which might not come on sale in Asia for a few months.

Elb,

If you buy Dell, you get service from Dell UK directly without dealing with dealer.

true about those laptops.

and plz, dont even think of bringing A4 papers to the UK. yeah, it's slightly more expensive than in msia, but it's cheaper to ask for friends who've lived in this country for quite sometime to get it for u. it costs aroun GBP 3 - 4 per ream (500 sheets) in sheffield. when i was in london it did cost GBP 7, but i was desperate back then, so i'd just had to grab it.

shop smart. if u can afford to wait, look for special offers (usually when school starts in september) or any shops closing down.

Just a friendly opinion, if you guys are thinking about cooking yourself, do spot for the special offer (3 for 2 / buy 1 get 1 free /half price) deal. There's plenty out there and in addition, if you're not brand conscious, you can try out those Tesco branded / Morrisons branded stuff because they are almost 50% cheaper than the branded stuff.

About the A4 papers, they are slightly more expensive but not TOO expensive. Try and get some of those Tesco branded papers or Stationary Box.

PS elb, your friend's laptop is a Toshiba?

Yup Dell offers international limited warranty for 3 years if you take their full-blown 3 year complete care package. But to take advantage of their full service (not limited) you'll have to be in Malaysia.
HP on the other hand gives 1st year international warranty, with option for extension for another 2 years at a fee. The caveat is, that the extra 2 years are only valid locally (Malaysia). For international coverage you have to purchase a care pack from the country you're going to within 90 days from purchase date of laptop.

Hopes this clears up the confusion.

BTW, my bro who is training with MAS, says that on UK flights, only ONE hand carry is allowed (with strict adherence to required dimensions). So if you bring your laptop on board you can't bring a second bag (unlike previously). Just stuff all your stuff into the laptop bag, I guess.

the weirdest thing i'm asked to bring over to uk soon is "A4 papers".

said it cost a bomb!! if bought from there. how true can it be?

any other necessities to be brought over from msia to uk?

opinions are alll welcome once again.

I brought this list of stationaries to UK;

1) 3-4 ball point pens (reliable ones and 2~3 types of colours)
2) 2 rulers
3) 1 eraser
4) 1 Scientific calculator
5) 1 notepad

No point of bringing A4 papers because it gonna cost you weight and space in your luggage. As for toiletries, bring a small amount that could last for 1~2 weeks.

2 cases I have experienced before (one of it is my friend):

1) I bought my Acer laptop from UK. When my HDD failed, I brought it to Acer Highpoint in Subang Jaya. They fixed it for me.

2) My friend's HP laptop LCD failure. The HP support team in UK are quite good. They come to my friend's house, collect the faulty laptop and fix it within 2~3 weeks, and send it back to him with no charges.

Point of story: If you wanna get something expensive and that comes with warranty, get something internationally well known.

AS per my post above, they've relaxed the ruling somewhat. Laptops are allowed, but need to be removed from bag and placed thru scanner at the checkpoint. Also no need for transparent bags, just ONE cabin bag that conforms to approved dimensions.
However, ban on liquids remain.

Indeed, my friend's laptop is a very well known international brand. So I disagree with your 'point of story'.

I have no idea what is considerred as well known brand. But, from my experience , there are only 3 brands of laptop that worth buying: Toshiba, IBM Thinkpad, and Dell. The other brands did not survive the abuses of frequent travels.

Well, if you notice at the airport, near the check in counters there's this metal structure where you can put your bag in to see if it fits in it. Anything that fits in this structure will be allowed on board, anything jutting out will not be allowed.

They sometimes have this structure at luggage selling stores. Just to make sure before you buy thumbup.gif

dreamer101 : Well that's why I'm thankful I can carry on my flimsier Compaq (according to your list la biggrin.gif ). It will be trashed in the cargo hold.

this sort of ruling is getting more n more crazy.
i just called up the MAS enquiry center n they said i'm allowed one hand carry and laptop bag.
the dimension for the hand carry luggage would be: length=45cm, width=35cm, depth=16cm sweat.gif

it is just too small sleep.gif
i wonder what can we put inside that hand carry bag laugh.gif

The purpose of hand-carry luggage is for you to put 1 or 2 days of clothes (t-shirt, pants and undergarments) just in case your luggage is lost. That's all. I think the size is alright. Bear in mind that it is quite troublesome to carry big stuff on broad. You got only a pair of hands.

Oh cmon, nobody care about those rules.

My baggage exceed those dimensions all the time and nobody check. Just make sure your luggage is not that big until you cannot fit inside the overhead compartment and they also said the max weight allowed is 7kg but mine is always like 15-18kg. I have flown many times like that without any problems on MAS, SQ and Emirates.

Emirates is also to be very lenient on excess baggage for students. One of my friends actually checked in 38kg of baggage.

That maybe true previously. But as of late (my brother's freind just travelled last week) they are very strict with it.

Wouldn't want to panic and repack on the spot when they really don't allow.

But like goliath said, you don't really need a huge carry on, as long can fit your lappie and valuables.
