is it photocopy service is allowed in the library since the books are so expensive? and will we need to do a lot of printing job there? (like print out the assignment and project). Thus, u guys advice is we better buy a printer there or bring from here or pay for the printing service at UK? how much will usually a piece of paper cost? Thanks biggrin.gif

No, it's illegal to photocopy book (under the right way) so don't go to a photocopy shop asking them to photocopy a book for you.

You can buy a printer there, but make sure the model is available in both Malaysia and Europe (and not the Europe version) since you can get alot of cheaper inks in Malaysia. Believe it or not, the ink for my printer cost me 30GBP each set (okay I admit, I got the Europe version printer >_> )

I forgotten the price, but one whole stack should be 3 - 4 GBP (depending on quality). As for the printing service, it's 6p for b/w and 12p I think, for color.

Lastly, yes, you need to do alot of printing.

ahhh... printing.

here's a tip on bringing ur own stuff to the UK. u must have a study visa of over a year to do this. pack all ur stuff (printer, ink, PC whatever) into one of fedex's package-box. ask someone to send it after u've settled down in the UK.

UK customs will hold ur package in gatwick. make sure to have ur contact number and email when u send the package. they will contact u in order to release ur package. they will say they're going to impose tax charges on the imported goods.

however, u tell them that u're a student, and just moved to this country, and those are ur personal stuff for studying. they will then send u a form which u'll need to fill. declare everything as personal/private USED stuff. then u'll need to go to ur university's help desk and request a letter proving that u've just registered to that university. send the completed form and the letter back to fedex in gatwick.

after a few hours of processing, the package will be in ur hands probably the next day.
inks are expensive. printers are fairly cheap. and there are virtually no immitatiions here. u buy everything original. what i did was i packed RM200 worth of inks (do check the expiry date!) when i sent my package here. they didnt even bothered to open/check the package, so all my ikan bilis and belacan was safe as well smile.gif

AFAIK, ikan bilis and belacan don't go well now. Just a joke here, my friend tried bringing some of those stuff in at Manchester and the sniff dog followed his luggage all the way while he was trying to "shoo" away the dog. It was a funny sight.

True, they have alot of web of knowledge and engineering village resources at your dispossal and it is highly adviced that you do flip through some of the journals. Relying on webbie information is a huge no no and chances of getting caught plagiarising is higher laugh.gif

If you look like a student and you don't behave like a terrorist, I don't think you'll be checked right?

Regardless, I brought my lappie in smoothly last time and it's better to carry your HDD with you, you don't want it inside a luggage which is being tossed around.

About the TV license, don't watch a TV if you're not willing enough to pay the fees. It's simple. Please don't give a bad name to Malaysians here in the UK.

In the end of the day, you are just giving ourself a bad name and a label of "third world citizens" to the people around the world smile.gif

hey, azarimy, ebuyer.com (the one located in sheffield) is having stock clearance sale because they are moving. Check it out. Their things should be darn cheap. Too bad I'm not there now  sad.gif

For people wanting to get computer gadgets, never try PC World unless you're desperate. Ebuyer has tones of cheaper stuff and speaking of which, I'm thinking of getting a MP3 there >_>

About the Council Tax, I'm not too sure about it myself but AFAIK, my landlord mentioned that they will settle it for me so I have no worries about it and all I need to pay is the rent agreed.

I'm not sure about Zone 1/2 but I was talking to one of the staff yesterday and they managed to find a 350GBP room in Southwark so basically, you might just need to browse around.

if u're a student, u dont have to pay for council tax. u'll need to provide ur landlord with the details (proof of study bla bla bla), and they'll settle it for u. landlords sometimes prefer students coz it'll take a huge chunk of the total council tax, so it'll actually benefit them.

on accommodations, usually u have 1 year contract the first year u stay here. but do mention this to ur accommodations office. they can provide/change u into a spouse room, which is within ur contract. breaking off the 1 year contract, however, is a little harder. u need to check with the accom. office.

another thing:

in london virtually all rents are calculated by week, not monthly. there're 12 months a year, or 52 weeks a year. dont just convert a GBP100 per week into GBP400 a month. here's why:

400 a month = 4800 a year
100 per week = 5200 a year

i made this mistake when i first came here. i thought i misplaced some of my money. then my flatmate told me to recalculate this. easy money for the landlords!
*
I fell for that too >_>

Just remember to calculate it based on 52 weeks and not by 12 month smile.gif

Do watch out on filesharing since some universities are very very strict on this matter. However, there are alternatives depending on whether you find them or not smile.gif

Now now, just create a topic in Kopitiam for all students in the UK to gather okay?

Try to keep this thread clean of chatters. If anyone of you is kind hearted (and free) enough, do create a topic at kopitiam containing the nick/location of the members who are currently in UK so if advice is needed somewhere, someone might be there smile.gif

About the flights, I read in the news yesterday that BAA has requested airports to follow specific security measures for flight bound to UK. So if you are not allowed to carry on any hand luggage and stuff like that, I believe KLIA will most likely inform the passengers prior to the flight.

About getting a job, I'm not a bright/young/genious graduate, but I did found a job here. And some forummers also managed to find a job here. It might not be the job that everyone dies for, but I certainly love that job because the field I'm in has little prestigious companies and this is one of the best companies in this field smile.gif

Lastly, for now, the shortage falls on civil engineering sector, so in other word, it's easier for civil engineer to get a job because companies do not need to go through a series of hassle to apply a permit for them compared to other engineering discipline.

Here is a list of jobs for which it is relatively 'easy' to find a job (as in the companies do not have to write a detailed report to prove that they have not managed to find anyone else suitable within the EU for that job, etc etc). Not to say that you cannot find a job outside of those listed, but you will probably need to be specialized or are a very promising graduate/ worker for the company to pick you above anyone else in the EU who is competing for the same job.

http://www.skillclear.co.uk/skilllist.asp

Of course, you need to have an officially recognized/ accredited degree, etc etc.
*
It's easy but not the easiest because you are required to have two years experience in the related field. It took my friend with a Masters degree half a year before he can get a permit.

Erm.. sorry i'm a bit blur regarding this. from the link u provide, it states engineer require 2 years working exp to get a work permit.

then, under  SEGS - Science and Engineering  Scheme, if graduate with second class honours (2.2) or higher can stay in UK for a year. So, if during that period i manage to work in the engineering related field till the given term is finished. This means i cannot either stay or apply for worK permit? due to i dont have enough working experience (just work till about a year only)  arang-arang  doh.gif

Or as long as my employer agree to sponsor me, then i can still work in UK for the remaining time. But is this kind of work permit same as the work permit that u showed us? sweat.gif  (need two years working exp one).

Thanks in advance
*
The SEGS scheme is introduced for graduate (science/engineering) to stay for another year here in the UK. You can work for one year anywhere in the UK without restriction with the permit. Before the one year is up, your employer will need to apply a working permit on your behalf smile.gif

My old part time job earns me around 5.05 GBP per hour so it's rather acceptable.

It's not that hard to find a job, all you need to do is just scout around smile.gif

Should i buy my labtop in Malaysia or buy it in Uk? as u know that after the incident of 11/8, i afraid labtop, psp all these stuff would be prohibited aboard into the plane..and is it cheaper and i will able to get a lastest labtop in Uk? by the way, how much XBOX360 sell in Uk? i am going to portsmouth, anyone there can give me some advice? thx a lot
*
Get it in Malaysia if possible, since some of the lappies here in the UK are slightly more expensive compared to in Malaysia.

-Edit: Forgotten to mention, you can save the cash in Malaysia and buy a set of suit here (you'll need it, either now or later) in a shop called George. It is a subsidiary of ASDA and believe it or not, I got my self 2 shirts + 2 tie + 1 jacket + 2 slacks for 40GBP = RM280 and the quality is very good as well, just that it's not branded stuff, that's all smile.gif

Well, that's a valid dilemma. If following current scenario I will get it over there, coz I can't imagine checking in my laptop. Sure hancur berkecai when get there. Whatever extra expenses incurred when buying over there, should be worth it to cover the potential damage.
However, I got mine a month ago oredi, so now pening la cry.gif

Yeap that's true also, however, I remember you can get your baggage insured at the airport? I used to wrap my stuff (ext hdd) in bubble wrap and put it in between clothes before checking in my baggage.

I'm not really sure about the insurance so you might have to check it. Sorry

By the way, where is GEORGE?
Can I find it in Birmingham itself? Or it's only in London?40GBP is really cheap!!
Let me know where can I find this shop.
Is there a link of the shop?
*
I got mine at Leeds. They are still having a discount now so you can check it out if you have the time, they have some pretty decent clothing there and if you wanna save some bucks on clothing, you can try there (or Primark).

http://www.george.com/company/

For those who are going to UK, you can save some money on winter cloth since there'll be quite a lot of sales later and also, you can spot for some cheap deals at shops mentioned above.

Checked out the site, really great deals even for duvet and pillowcase sets.
But seems to not have outlets in Central London. I'll be staying around UCL area. The nearest is at Clapham Junction 7.6km away!!!
I noticed from your earlier profile you're from Baker Street, London, so where do you go for the nearest George store?
*
It was just a joke about the baker street since I used to study at Bradford, so I take the train to go down to Leeds. Though I'll be moving to Surrey Quays in the coming days as I'll be starting my work there.

About the George, I think 7.6km is still pretty acceptable though you can try other outlets like Primark for some cheap stuff. But after buying from George, I would stick to this shop more often than Primark now. Also if you intend to get some cheap stuff like kitchen ware or duvet set, you can drop by at IKEA for a visit since sometimes, they have some cheap stuff and also, the hot dogs taste nice (for 75p) smile.gif
