wat course r u studying?
let's say i gonna  study at bradford Uni for 1 year, the fees should be around 10K GBP
after i sum of everything u listed there, cost of living shoud be around 300GBP per month. so total expenses for 1 year at there should be RM 120K ( minimum ) ?
and for any emergency case, i spare a RM30K there, so the whole thing with RM 150K should be sufficient?

400/month should be fine. For entertainment, increase your budget abit just in case. tongue.gif

QUOTE(kelvinbongcn @ Aug 17 2006, 09:03 PM)
Some silly questions here. actually the university accommodation will include something like pillow, blanket and provide plates or spoons in kitchen or not? or we need to buy ourselves one?
*
Your room will be stripped naked. You need to get all those basic things on your own. Pillows, blanket (they called it duvet), bedsheets, spoons, forks, frying pans, kettle, etc. For starters, bring along one pair of spoon and fork (or even chopstick if you like) when you are leaving. Once you are settled, then you could go for mass shopping spree tongue.gif

QUOTE(kelvinbongcn @ Aug 17 2006, 09:03 PM)
Ya the accommodation fee really varies a lot. like mine one which is nearly about GBP 85 per week without "makan"  shocking.gif  (at U of Birmingham for 42 week contract). so if i estimate GBP 6000 for my living cost. then only about GBP 2500 for the transportation, clothes, food and little.... entertaiment. actually enough or not lei? blink.gif
*
6000 = transportation, food, clothes, entertainment (a little bit whistling.gif ), and travelling. Yeah, it is enough provided you are super shoppaholic

QUOTE(kelvinbongcn @ Aug 17 2006, 09:03 PM)
ANd usually what u guys cook at there ar? hope all the "SI FU" here can share their "recipe" a bit...  notworthy.gif
*
Me cook everyday because me live in self-catered hall. Nobody cook for me. Me cook for ownself. Once a while tapau fish and chips, or chicken and chips (their fried chicken taste like KFC, serious!! ), or go to chinese restaurant with group of friends (later on off to pub for drinking feast tongue.gif ). I don't cook when I'm busy.

Are you bringing a small rice cooker along? It is quite handy. For bak kut teh, seal tightly. When comes to desperate times, you will end up chucking anything there is available and stir fry to serve as dinner

When I first went there, I brought 13,000 (bankdraft) along with me plus 700 cash in my pocket. Those are for;

1) Tuition fees (8,000 after discount etc)
2) Accomodation (2,500)

So, the rest is for me to spend on;

1) Basic stuffs (pillow bla bla bla mentioned earlier)
2) Food
3) Transportation
4) Travelling
5) Entertainment

After one year, I still have some left for next year.

So, 2,500 is alright. This is where your money management comes to practice. Control yourself. I have friends who spent quite alot. In the end they left quite a little and we are still in semester 1. It is a pity to see them without money and have to save alot so that they could survive till end of semester 2 (that's when we all go back to Malaysia for summer holidays).

One more advised I would like to give to you all;

Know your friend(s) well. In terms of atitude, characteristic and trust.

At times, you have to make strict decisions even it hurts your friendship. I have experienced this before. So, becareful of what you do because one wrong step might lead you to somewhere you don't wanna be

Well, I had a discount because I'm from INTI so my fees and halls of residence both cost 8800 GBP per year.

Minus the accommodation, 3000GBP per year for living expenses is more than enough and you will have quite a bit of spare cash to go for trips as well. Don't forget you can work part time too, earning around 30 - 50 GBP per week, so basically, you'll have quite a bit of cash to spare if you spend wisely smile.gif

*PS, I did Mechanical Engineering.

Would this apply to Central London as well? DOubt it.
My weekly rental at Langton Close (self catered flat) is already GBP104.95, which works out to GBP454/month and GBP4000+ from Oct to July. shocking.gif My monthly allowance from JPA only GBP550, so have to fall back on my monthly salary to live properly cry.gif
Fees thank God covered by them otherwise die sweat.gif

tommy141184 : Heard from my frens that the rice cookers over there not as heavy duty as ours here. Just need to get a basic small one. DOn't think will take up much space gua.

Of course not. Central London is a different ballgame altogether from the rest of the UK (property prices at the least).

Food expenses actually can reduce more lo if u work on those Chinese shops..

Mostly this will work during the night.. so b4 you work, u got one meal to eat, then after finish work get another meal.. This depends on the boss ...

I usually work on the chinese take away shop.. so get one meal b4 working ( b4 5pm ) and get another one after work. ( 12 midnite - u can save it for breakfast the next day.. ) Wee!!!

This is the part time job... Free meal lo... save ur money to buy and save ur time to do da meal.. how about that?? Dun say you are poor student, even rich student also da same.. We all lazy to cook and hard to cook yummy food..

You only start to look for odd jobs IF you are confident enough that you could handle your time table well. No point working if your results is bad. smile.gif

wah.. watching movie in UK cinema is very expensive... so try watch in Malaysia puas puas.. One person is 6 pounds +-.. but I know every wednesday if u use Orange Network can get buy 1 get 1 free ticket promotion..

Yup.. aim your target first.. The Aim is too study and get good score at there.. Not getting jobs... That's just part time job after you have feeling study time is alrite wit you.. I had a hard time but now i have graduated and happy about my result. Of course I can't get First Class Honors for my degree but at least i can cope myself surviving in the UK..

If you wan to work like Chinese restaurant, try to speak english and cantonese more fluently.. Mandarin is second... Most boss are from Hong Kong and they speak Cantonese than Mandarin or English.. English is when you chat with the customer.. So .. jus give u some hint for that.. But for me I won't do those waiter job... Very tired ... Each night can earn from 20 - 35 pounds depends on location and the business.. Work 4 days you can earn 100 Pounds and this is enough for weekly expenses..

In Sheffield, you could watch a movie for 3.80 (that was last year's price). And on top of that, they sell monthly pass whereby you could watch as much as you want within a month with a fixed price of 9.90 (I think)

You need to read chinese too if you want to work in Chinese restaurant.

this is the dialog i had with the tai sun clerk(a chinese groceries store in sheffield) last week:

me: how much?
clerk: (said something in chinese)
me: i'm sorry, what?
clerk: GBP 7.20. u no speak chinese?
me: ummm no. why?
clerk: u're not chinese?
me: ummm no... for the thousandth time: i'm not chinese! laugh.gif

(i frequent that shop almost everyweek)

anyway, u can apply unlimited cinema pass for GBP9.90 a month, like goliath said. the contract is one year, but u get to watch films for free for the whole year. but do plan this well ahead. make sure there are good films in the coming year, if not u'll waste ur money watching crap movies.

and no, adult cinemas isnt around anymore laugh.gif

Then what did you do? Washing plates?

We've discussed about laptops, now want to ask about printers. Think it's a necessity in addition to the lappie, as we have theses to print and stuff. I imagine printing costs are pretty high in the UK.
How much does a decent inkjet and refills cost there? 3rd party refills available? Don't think can lug one from over here.

@jooku1

Not washing plates.. I do take telephone or meal orders... Actually that's a gal job, but they say my talking is more polite than da gals... so I do those stuff.. Just talk talk talk.. Like Customer service type lo..

Printers... Imagine u buy 1 orignal Canon black ink cause RM20.. in UK original black ink cost 13 Pounds = 3-4 times expensive... So I suggest get from Malaysia for the ink.. no matter on 3rd party as well... INK are very expensive.. Printer ah... hmmmm... price still resonable... but if u think wana bring it, better ask your parents to send by poslaju once you have arrive and settle ur accomodation.. So.. it's up to you.. Check the price in UK then u can compare wit Malaysia..
