We've discussed about laptops, now want to ask about printers. Think it's a necessity in addition to the lappie, as we have theses to print and stuff. I imagine printing costs are pretty high in the UK.
How much does a decent inkjet and refills cost there? 3rd party refills available? Don't think can lug one from over here.

Get a printer if you think that you need to print alot of assignments/projects/paperworks. Get your refills from Malaysia.

Not washing plates.. I do take telephone or meal orders... Actually that's a gal job, but they say my talking is more polite than da gals... so I do those stuff.. Just talk talk talk.. Like Customer service type lo..

Printers... Imagine u buy 1 orignal Canon black ink cause RM20.. in UK original black ink cost 13 Pounds = 3-4 times expensive... So I suggest get from Malaysia for the ink.. no matter on 3rd party as well... INK are very expensive..  Printer ah... hmmmm... price still resonable... but if u think wana bring it, better ask your parents to send by poslaju once you have arrive and settle ur accomodation.. So.. it's up to you.. Check the price in UK then u can compare wit Malaysia..

I buy good black refill inks online plus delivery for only 1.6pounds for my canon i250 so i dont think it is necessary to buy ink over so its up to you.

So I guess it's still cheaper to buy here and post over there, than to go buy there.

Yup, checked the prices. So much more expensive in the UK cry.gif But if you add in the posting charges, will probably come up to the same. Sigh.... dilemma.

What did you guys do?

I bought my printer as well as the refills from Malaysia. I brought it along, I didn't post it.

Hhmm... Good question.. I knew I was going to print colour pages as well. So, my option is to get something portable and colour printer together (in the end, I bought Canon i80). Though it is expensive, I get to put in my backpack instead of inside my luggage.

Besides, I could bring it back after easily..

What he meant was you buy in UK, use it and sell it (in ebay.co.uk or wherever it is) when you are about to leave UK for good.

Check this site (I used to get some stuff from here) or Amazon.co.uk .

Goliath,

After 2 to 4 years, it may not be worthwhile for you to bring it back..

Actually, it does to me coz my home has no printer at all. In fact, I'm still using now after 2 years. I wouldn't have brought it back if it cost me extra space/weight. smile.gif

A printer is pretty handy when you need it. Sometimes the printers in the library/labs have pretty long Q, especially during the deadlines for assignments or coursework.

Besides, you will be priinting a huge chunk of notes and as well as your final year report.

You can gather another 1 or 2 buddy, share some some cash and buy the printer. Each person buy their own refill so change the refill whenever someone wants to print. That's how we do it last time laugh.gif

At a postgrad level, some universities bear the cost of printing etc. Your office should come equipped with a laser printer and you just take the paper from stores.

only if u're under a kind of special scholarship or grant. in my dept, where grants arent that common, we had to spend our own money for printing and stuff. at the same time, my housemate, who's in the engineering dept, even had his weekly tram passes paid by the department. bleeeehhhh....

architects are being discriminated! waaargh!!!

Not really. I'm under no scholarship or grant, and I have my own office that I share with a couple of friends, and we get to print what we want at no additional cost. I have other friends from other departments who don't get their own office, though. So it all boils down to departmental policy, if you ask me.

That's for students account. You have to be resident in UK for at least 3 years to qualify unfortunately sad.gif
But of course with a big enough bank draft, doors will magically open rolleyes.gif

Paper is heavy. At any rate, you can buy a 500 piece stack for around 3. And
quite frankly, all you need to bring are things to settle you down. The rest can be bought; it is not too expensive if you shop smartly.

One thing which I think I should mention to people with regards to laptops. The issue of where to buy laptops (and to quite frank, anything electronic and expensive such as dSLRs etc) were discussed before, but I did not point out what could be the turning point: Warranty.

If you are here for one year, then buy them from Malaysia. The international warranty will cover you (most manufacturers offer one year international warranty), although trying to claim the warranty could be a pain in the butt.

If you will be here for longer, then buy them from the UK. Sure, its pricier, but think about it. You'd usually be able to get three year (local UK) warranties, and you don't need to suffer the hassle (price-wise, for courier expenses which can be very very expensive; and time wise especially). If you will be here for your entire course, this option is well worth looking at.
