Hi all. I am presently working as a lecturer in a private uni at my hometown in perak. Current gross salary is 4.9k. I have been thinking of switching careers and so started applying for jobs some three weeks ago. So far, i have attended interviews with 2 companies in the klang valley and have another scheduled for next monday. Yesterday i received an offer from one of the firms i had met earlier this week... rm5.9k gross.

I am turning 31 later this year and have been contemplating a change of career to the industry/corporate environment. My wife who also teaches at the same uni is also looking for a job in klang valley so we are thinking of relocating some time later this year. Our present commitment includes paying monthly installments for our house in ipoh and the one myvi which we share.

Hope to get some advice whether i should accept it and put in my resignation right away. If you have questions, just ask and i will reply. Thanks in advance for sharing your opinions.

Stay better. 1k didnt worth it. Go work jam, comeback home jam, higer cost of living. More petrol + toll. 4.9k already alot in education background.

I assume your property are landed.
Getting a new job with rm1000 extra will result to rm4000(estimate) of lost if you were to accept it. And you need to rent a pigeon hole that sure have break in every month.

Thanks for the replies. Yes i understand the increase of living cost means moving to kl may result in a nett loss. Hoping my wife will also get a similar increase that will slightly cushion the impact of having to rent a relatively safe place to stay.

I have been contemplating this switch of career for a year now, and we both feel a short term sacrifice may be worth it considering the potential of salary growth in the industry as compared to staying on in academia and having to invest in a phd journey which will take many years with only a small pay rise at the end.

Am just worried that we will lose both value and drive each day we continue staying in our present comfort zones...

Dilemma... listen to the heart, which urges me to explore a new path... or listen to the brain, which urges me to listen to your advice.

I say take the leap, you might not have that option anymore after you have kids, it's not fair to yourself and your family if you go on living and wondering what would it have been.

15% is good (im not sure what's your industry's average) seeing the current economy turmoil that we're in now.
*
Percentage is misleading, since 2%-3% annual corporate raise is consider average in the US. Let's put it in actual figure, less than RM800 increment from originate salary after 3 years of service.

However, people are still staying with the firm for 3 reasons.
1. The firm is constantly promoting values, in result, people are actually nice here and also built up a perception that money is not that important.

2. The firm provides quite a number of non-monetary perks which I don't really care for.

3. Job security, it's not walk in the park to replace an experienced employee to do what we do, one has to undergo 20 hours of training every month.

Fun fact, the average age in the firm is 29 y/o, most of them have been here for more than 4 years.
Maybe it's just me being too young to say this, but I think at the end of the day it's more realistic to receive a big paycheck to be recognized of your efforts. Don't you agree?

If you don't have plan to have children, go ahead.
As said, there's no safe place for stay in KL, you only have choices of either get rob or get house break in. And this is each month's routine.
I have friends that working in Singapore and 2 children. Every Saturday morning I sure can see them and Sunday afternoons I can't see them anymore. His wife are same age as my wife, but his wife look much more older than my wife. Is just because they have to rush everyday while we are still staying in comfort zone.
In current economy, hoping for good are wrong, shall hope for the bad. Worst days are not even started.

Yes. Don't want to live with regrets, whatever the decision made, I want to be able to look back with the knowledge that I had tried my best to fulfill my potential to the fullest.

Absolutely valid points. I suppose it is difficult to be optimisticin our present economic uncertainty. Things may only worsen and we may fall down and hurt ourselves a couple more times than if we choose to remain in our comfort zone. Thanks for the advice. Hopefully a year or two from now I will ba able to say with conviction that I overcome the odds and achieved my dream of doing well in a rewarding career rather than being stuck with a job with little potential of growing any wealth.

3.5k with no other benefits? Seems underpaid for OnG industries. In semiconductor fresh grad u can get 3.2k - 3.5k easily. If 2 years should get >4k. Just my opinion.

Exactly,.. this is the right way to look at things.

Job hop for early years is the way to go. When I was starting out, I jumped twice In two months. In two months I doubled my income. It's easy.. At entry level, you are underpaid.

So what are you going to do about it? If you are as skilled or hardworking as I am.. Be confident in yourself and command your rate upfront. Use your first job as back-up plan. If you don't get your rate, hey, just stay and work. But KEEP applying and Keep looking!

Yes, that's the correct mindset for people out there. Always constantly find yourself a better pay job whilst during in the current company. Then let the company counteroffer or whatnot in order to maximize your salary. wink.gif Always put yourself to choose the job, don't let the job choose you. biggrin.gif

Job Desciption : Provides technical support to end user
Years spent in company : 1 and a half
Company : MNC
Industry : ITO
Tenure : Permanent
Employment Level : Snr Exec
Experience before joining : 3-4 years
Highest paper qualification/ education background : Degree
salary : RM 4.2k + 1 month contractual bonus
Location: KL
Age: Almost 29

Am I earning it right for my age?

This is an easy job, always leave on time and there's no more work after working hour, due to this, I have become lazier, and my brain somewhat become dull, because every day just doing trivial troubleshootings for noob users, as opposed to previous job where I need to deal with server and networking.

my lead has made it clear that this job won't have fat bonus and increments, maybe only less than rm100 increment each year, but everyday you just clock in clock out on time, end of month you shall receive the salary without stretching much of your mental and physical.

I am now in a dilemma, shall I step out of my comfort zone and try something more challenging? but I am the kind of person who doesn't like official stuff after working hour, I see most of my friends having to stay back or work during weekends, I don't want to be like them, but at the same time, the salary seems like not enough these days, especially the fall of ringgit

what would you do if you were me?

btw I am single, one of the reasons is I don't want to have a busy career which hinders me from looking up for potential partner. I become worried as I see my brother and most of his colleagues who work as journalists, have no time for dating.

i think you should take a leap of faith. if you don't want to work hard when you are still young, then when? forever be like that? nothing challenging in your life?

sometimes long working hours is good. no one ask you to go for a job that you doesn't have rest time at all. strike a balance.

partner will come when the time is right.

funnily you're saying like those auditors/investment bankers/ any other busy profession won't have partner?
