I am aware of serverpartdeals but the customs tax and shipping could be high. I bought 6x 18TB seagate Exos X18 a year+ ago from Taobao, back then no but even with 10% it's not that bad. The drives are refurbished or from data center as well, zero hours (probably wiped) but they were < 1 year old.

All 6 drives are still working fine today. However it was a gamble, also worried that I get DOA drives. Shipping HDD back to China is close to impossible so you weigh your risks.

Synology latest DSM 7.2.2 update will remove the app Video Station. Just a heads up for those that use the app before installing the latest update. They never state the reason, only how to use this party app

Synology pulled out this update because it's not clearer on the details. The new update Version: 7.2.2-72806 was released and looks like in addition to removal of Video Station, they also pruning H.265/HEVC, HEIC/HEIF, H.264/AVC and VC-1 codecs on OS level, except Surveillance Station still retain H.264/AVC. Probably due to licensing fess changes. Now video decoding is moved to the client side, and you'll need additional software and browser extension on PC for Photos.
QUOTE
4. Starting from this version, the processing of media files using HEVC (H.265), AVC (H.264), and VC-1 codecs will be transitioned from the server to end devices to reduce unnecessary resource usage on the system and enhance system efficiency. These codecs are widespread on end devices such as smartphones, tablets, computers, and smart TVs. If the end device does not support the required codecs, the use of media files may be limited. Refer to this article for workarounds. In addition, please note the following exceptions:
  * Surveillance Station on DSM will continue to support server-side processing of AVC (H.264) streams, see the release notes.
  * Deep Video Analytics (DVA) series models and VisualStation clients will retain support for AVC (H.264) and HEVC (H.265) codecs.

5. To ensure package compatibility, Advanced Media Extensions (AME), File Station, Media Server, Surveillance Station, Synology Drive, Universal Search, Synology Photos and Snapshot Replication will automatically update to the latest version.

6. Video Station is not available on DSM 7.2.2. Refer to this article for workarounds to stream videos to end devices.
Gonna wait this first to see how everything panned out

Has anyone here using the 2.5G/5G dongle 'hack' for their Syno NAS?
Which brand of adapter is available to purchase here in MY?

Finally took the plunge and update to DSM 7.2.2
It give a long words of warning what will happen once you update it.
user posted image

And the update can't proceed until I uninstall Video Station

For my usage there's no difference. HEVC video uploaded from my phone will still playback on PC browser without the need to install the Synology Image Assistant app or the browser extension. I guess the app is for upload from PC but previously it is also won't playback HEVC if upload from PC, now maybe with the app it can playback.

I'm using Jellyfin. On my PC with browser, phone with Jellyfin app and Google TV with Jellyfin app, all can playback after update. I only direct stream, didn't use the server convert function.

since truecharts have abandoned truenas, i changed my setup so that truenas is only for storage
instead of truenas running baremetal and other apps/vms goes on top of it, now i have truenas/ubuntu vm running on top of proxmox
*
thats incorrect. it was truenas that ditched truecharts laugh.gif it was not worth using truecharts, their packages as badly maintained. Just use docker and get direct from the project on github, copy the docker compose, edit it, then use dockge to deploy it. Easy. Using dockge it can also save your docker compose which is easy to backup.

truenas opted for docker since that is more popular and works out for most people.

but for people that want K3 or other, they still can. a way to do this is via jailmaker. you can then install K3, podman or whatever it is you require.

The default for truenas however is docker. You don't need to run a jail anymore for docker, though you can. Jails are still pretty handy, but for simplicity and if you are using docker, may just be a good idea to use the default.

proxmox is useful if u want to use ur server for more than just truenas. thats one option, personally i never tried that, but i didn't hear bad things about it. just that it's just an additional complexity to the setup smile.gif

its mutual abandonment. earlier this year ix planned to remove k3s from future versions, so truecharts stopped updating their packages for truenas
btw, i'm using scale not core. and truenas is only for hosting media files used for plex
moving from bare metal truenas to proxmox and then truenas+ubuntu server makes managing them much easier

im using dragonfish with jailmaker for my dockers.

tried eel, but it broke my jailmaker from working (but stux who tested it said it worked for him). stux video is how to migrate from jailmaker to truenas native docker support.

jailmaker ended support, so may have to do that in future.

right now eel is release candidate, i would not recommend it just yet.

Ever since from DSM 7, when uploading HEVC/h.265 video on PC with web browser, it won't generate compressed video that will be used by the web browser for playback. I remember with DSM 6 it will generate compressed video.

Hence now Synology comes up with Image Assistant app and extension to solve this. And this is what I wanna try now
user posted image

The app must be running in the back ground and the extension must be installed and enabled on the web browser then only it can create compressed video for playback on web browser. The app doesn't have much settings that can be tweaked

user posted image user posted image

First I try with the app installed but the extension not installed. HEVC video uploaded by web browser to Photos can't be playback in the web browser.

Then I try upload after extension installed. Now the web browser can play back the HEVC video. But something seems off.

This is the video thumbnail
user posted image

And this is when the video playback in web browser
user posted image

It looks like the video have a grey layer on top of it.

I tried using Photos app on my phone to upload the same HEVC video, it also will make a compressed video for web browser playback. This is when the video from phone playback on web browser.
user posted image
Now it doesn't have the grayish look.

To make sure really have issue, I tried with another old video that I uploaded from phone few months ago.
The thumbnail

Playback

Now I re-upload again from web browser and let Synology Image Assistant do the compressed video.
The playback

Again have the grayish look.

The Image Assistant solve the issue of creating compressed video for web browser playback, but it create another issue. Looks like for now I still have to use my phone to upload video.

I've just changed my ISP from Unifi to Maxis. I am now unable to use Synology NAS outside of my home. I am still using the same TP link AX73 router and only changed the ISP settings from Unifi to Maxis. Does anyone know how to enable router access?

Previously you're using public IP and port forward? Maxis now is private IP?

I don't know if can request Maxis to give you public IP. The other 2 options is by using Synology QuickConnect or Tailscale to be the middle-men that connect your NAS with other device from internet.
