since truecharts have abandoned truenas, i changed my setup so that truenas is only for storage instead of truenas running baremetal and other apps/vms goes on top of it, now i have truenas/ubuntu vm running on top of proxmox
thats incorrect. it was truenas that ditched truecharts it was not worth using truecharts, their packages as badly maintained. Just use docker and get direct from the project on github, copy the docker compose, edit it, then use dockge to deploy it. Easy. Using dockge it can also save your docker compose which is easy to backup.
truenas opted for docker since that is more popular and works out for most people.
but for people that want K3 or other, they still can. a way to do this is via jailmaker. you can then install K3, podman or whatever it is you require.
The default for truenas however is docker. You don't need to run a jail anymore for docker, though you can. Jails are still pretty handy, but for simplicity and if you are using docker, may just be a good idea to use the default.
' proxmox is useful if u want to use ur server for more than just truenas. thats one option, personally i never tried that, but i didn't hear bad things about it. just that it's just an additional complexity to the setup
its mutual abandonment. earlier this year ix planned to remove k3s from future versions, so truecharts stopped updating their packages for truenas btw, i'm using scale not core. and truenas is only for hosting media files used for plex moving from bare metal truenas to proxmox and then truenas+ubuntu server makes managing them much easier
Past few months or a year or so, there's a sudden surge of Seagate HDD being sold at considerably low prices that what it usually is. Recently it was exposed those are used HDD with its S.M.A.R.T info wiped out. Now new info have come out, those HDD were from Chia crypto mining farms. Even the seller doesn't know it is used HDD
bought a few seagate ironwolf 6tb from lazada back in 2023 smartctl -x returns power on hours as 9335 (~1.4 years) smartctl -l farm returns power on hours as 38028 (~4.3 years)
price was cheap when i bought it, label also has typo at least it was usable, and i only stored plex media files on it
I'm split between Synology DS1522+ and Lockerstor AS6706T. Looking to multi-purpose the device; for file storage and some for streaming. They are about the same price but with some dramatically different specs. I've been reading thru pages upon pages but I guess local sifus are my best bet
Thanks
just to add on xxboxx's post, on the streaming part, depending on your configuration and playback device, you might not need to be concerned about reencode
my plex setup, playback devices consists of the following: 4k smart tvs windows pc using plex app (using browser sometime requires reencode) ipad (bought the app) mi box s
plex relay disabled, external playback through vpn, all clients are considered local so far all video streams are direct play
