https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005007783782928.html no idea about warranty for aliexpress. the one i ordered from shopee, when i check seagate it says it's genuine but for warranty, to ask from the seller. so i asked seller, they explain 3 year seagate, 2 year seller for warranty. so a bit odd. but when i ran the short, long and block scan on one drive, it came out fine 0 errors. for 12tb exos i got from here. others reported ok (not sure if anyone tested warranty. seller claims international warranty and 5 year though) https://shopee.com.my/Seagate-12T-Helium-Ha...352.18188395289
Anything coming out from aliexpress need to be careful. Maybe parts inside already swap out or refurbished units and make it like new. You know la China.
probably overspent and overkill though if you are looking for ddr5 ecc, this seller on ebay has it (but no warranty i heard) https://www.ebay.com.my/str/tmgalaxy?_trksi...6.m3561.l161211 but there is an odd situation with ddr5 ecc. it's not as good as ddr4 ecc. if you want proper ecc, stick to something like am4 platform using ddr4 on an asrock motherboard. certain asrock were validated by users as having working ecc confirmed. do your own research
personally i just went for am5, non ecc (cauz expensive and hard to find a ddr5 ecc udimm, also even then it might not be as good as thorough as ddr4 ecc anyway) my build does not have an ipmi, though you can look for an ipmi mobo if you want. I'll just use a hdmi cable to do initial bios update and truenas install. Under consideration is a jetkvm but considering it's a kickstarter it's also high risk whether they actually deliver
all this for home use? wow, throw in a 4000 series GPU, it's a better gaming PC than a lot of us here
well to be fair, i did not recommend my build to others. this is simply what i built for myself. its my first time, be kind but yes you are right, probably overkill. this was simply a diy nas project of mine for homelab. rather than buy a prebuilt like synology, i wanted to try something like this for once, also a rack nas build rather than tower (i got 4 of these already which i am phasing out )
but i had future uses in mind, maybe convert it to a desktop gaming rack by adding graphic card. maybe use proxmox then i can setup vms for different usage (1 for truenas, 1 for OS e.g. windows or linux desktop for gaming but then for that use case, maybe the ryzen 7900 would have been better since more cores and threads to share compared to the ryzen 7600. even wendel recommended it in leveltech1)
however this mobo is a pcie 4 (not 5) despite being an am5 mobo. so it has it's quirks. would i be able to later move a RX 7800 XT nitro plus to it in future? even if i remove the middle bay to hopefully make space for it? i dont know.
but a rack case that may allow for big graphics cards is this one
they have more cases. some allow you to install the graphics card horizontally using a riser rather than vertical. This solves the issue where there is a height issue where u cant fit the power cable connector. example with graphics card installed
if i could have done things different, i could have gotten a better rack case for a better price/value. probably from aliexpress. sliger is good but not sure about shipping and availability, or that would be a great pick (but expensive)
also my open rack cannot adjust the depth, making finding compatible rails a problem.
but there is special instructions to update to allow new bios. has some quirks and not enuff pcie slots to fit my stuff, so i went with the msi b650 tomahawk wifi instead this was another another board i was looking at https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/B650M-HDVM.2/...p#Specification some of these motherboards if u populate all m2 slots, it MAY deactivate 2 of the sata ports (most of these only had 4 or 6 sata port). Only the msi i got seemed didn't have that issue.
If you need more sata ports, then you'd need pcie slot to then use a hba card (IT mode) to add more sata ports. need more m2 slot, then u get the m2 pcie card (also requires bifurfaction support which AMD tends to have. u have to check ur motherboard specs first)
You have server rack at home? I like server racks but no proper place to put them. I just end up going for desktop pc case.
well the nas booted up and running truenas. now just restoring datasets from backup right now :}
well i'm using a 15U rack, it fits all my switches and the 4u rack in it. As for the OLD tower nas, putting that on an ikea box shelf along with the rest of my collection. Thinking of replacing that with a sturdier metallic shelf.
if you check shopee they got 15u open rack. for homelab this size is good for most builds. But i would recommend navepoint 12u or 18u open rack
but i didn't see any local stock, but you can't go wrong with this one. it's depth adjustable (which you would need if later you want to use rails for something like the 4u nas case i got) well nothing wrong with going desktop pc case. as long as it can fit ur drives, the motherboard psu etc... thats really all u need
thanks for sharing! how many users your homelab is catered for?
I have a synology at home Malaysia. My home using unifi 300mbps (Pro Upgrade 500mbps)
May I know is there a way I can let my family download file from it ? Family is in Singapore.
** Because file is 400gb, looking away to let them download directly instead of using google drive **
One way is to setup Tailscale or Zerotier on your Synology NAS, and they need to install Tailscale or Zerotier client on their devices. Then they can directly connect to your NAS.
Another way is if you got public IP then can setup port forward and use DDNS for OpenVPN or QuickConnect but this is more technical.

I have Unifi 100Mbps Pro Upgrade to 300Mbps, lost my public IP last week. Migrated some services that I share with my parents to Cloudflare Tunnel and non-shared services using Tailscale.
For Synology, didn't they have File Station and QuickConnect feature that can be Synology drives remotely?

Without port forwarding QuickConnect would attempt to establish a virtual tunnel, Hole Punching. If it's able to then you'll get good speed. If not then it will go through Synology Relay Server, in this case the speed would be throttled.
Recently Synology updated its Drive app to support directly editing .txt and .md files within the app. Finally there's a solution for .md files user that also sync it on multiple devices of different OS such as Windows, Android, Mac OS and also iOS. Only on iOS it can't sync files in Synology Drive to folder that other app can access due to iOS sandboxed environment restriction. Now on iOS can directly edit the file. Previously I have to manually copy out, edit on markdown app, then upload back.
When the eye is enabled, it will show the markdown syntax.
When disabled, it will hide the markdown syntax and show how it would looked like.
At the bottom it also have buttons for some common uses syntax
