Ya, if go full package will be expensive sweat.gif
You can get the essential first only then only slowly get more. NAS must get first. HDD if your PC already got and you going to move the data to NAS, you can reuse first, if got 1 HDD only then just get another first, at least must have RAID-1 for redundancy.

UPS can get later, unless your place always have power failure. RAM upgrade not really necessary unless you going to run VM or a lot of apps.

Indeed 😪😪😪... don't have any HDD now thou... store setup also hefty a price... is it difficult to do on our own 🤔

Hye Sifus notworthy.gif

Finally settled for below items sweat.gif puke.gif mega_shok.gif

1. DS1621xs+
2. 8+8GB DDR4 ECC SODIMM
3. IronWolf 4TB x3
4. SSD Cache HP 500gb x2
5. APC Back-UPS BX950U-MS 950VA

Maybe tomorrow can receive it and start exploring the NAS world and may come with weird icon_question.gif

Hopefully this can last for coming 5 years hmm.gif

btw... can I add 2 old 512GB 2.5" SSD on top of the IronWolf as storage or better separate volume as backup hmm.gif

That is not cheap. Powerful NAS sweat.gif

I think better use the 2 old SSD as separate volume for backup, at least you got additional backup in case something goes wrong.
*
really nooo shakehead.gif ... maybe 1st round on the unit then in few years time can just add hdd sweat.gif great will do as separate backup volume thumbup.gif

Sifus... Morning yawn.gif

Guess almost complete the initial setup... I had created;

1. Storage Pool 1 (from all 3 disk in RAID-5)
- Later plan to add another pool from old small SSD as backup if workable

2. Volume 1, Volume 2 & Volume 3
- Guess I should wait for the verification complete before start populate the space is it hmm.gif
- or should I just use 1 volume icon_question.gif read below by "xxboxx" but really blur now confused.gif
- user posted image

3. SSD Cache 1 for Volume 1
- Just cannot create another Cache for Volume 2 & 3... sweat.gif
- or I should create only 1 volume and assign 1 cache rclxub.gif

4. Do I need to perform Data Scrubbing after verification completed?
- user posted image

5. Saw that "Hot-swappable drive = Yes"... Is this means I can put new drive (HDD/SSD) in the empty bay while the power still on? is it wise & ok to do that flex.gif

thanks a lot notworthy.gif

That one maybe because of DSM version but still need to create Storage Pool 1st, select drive (3 hdd) & set RAID-5

Yes then to create Volume need to select Storage Pool

Then I create folder.. just curious, if we do backup later using Storage Pool or Volume sweat.gif

user posted image

but now the Verification at 99.2%... Now thinking of delete Storage Pool 2 & 3 and just use 1 so that SSD Cache no issues;

Storage Pool only the OS sees it.

When create backup, you can choose the Volume or selected Folders/sub-folder in the Volume.
*
ar so it works like that... no sweat had change to 1 Storage Pool for all drives eddy icon_rolleyes.gif maybe another Storage Pool when adding later.

yet self prefer several pool with manageable size rather than too many Volume folders laugh.gif

still waiting scrubbing to finish before start populate storage sweat.gif another 35% to go doh.gif

The wrong subtitle is also in the same folder?
Maybe some issue that makes the Media Server recognized the wrong file. Previously I encounter subtitle not showing because the filename is too long.
*
Yes the subtitle for movie A, played movie D but subtitle A appear 😅😅😅.. I will try play movie A and see what coming out ✌

Subtitle and how the video play is manage by the media player right? You can search and switch the subtitle as you want.

NAS is just stream the data file out.

Sifus notworthy.gif

Friend of mine suggest that I should have a hub connection between the NAS and Desktop...

The Hub will be connected to the Router for internet icon_rolleyes.gif

Will these change any setting that I had already set sweat.gif such as QuickConnect unsure.gif

Becarefull what you can share.

This 2 weeks, my NAS got someone try to log in. But fail.

IP from local.

Attempt 1 -- IP Address [121.122.63.71] has been blocked by (My NAS) via SSH 2020-12-26 08:45

Attempt 2 -- IP Address [14.192.247.42] has been blocked by (My NAS) via SSH 2021-01-05 16:47
*
Not thinking to share yet... maybe movies only later on icon_idea.gif sweat.gif

So if I not enable SSH should be ok is it sweat.gif

QUOTE(thankyou @ Jan 6 2021, 03:46 PM)
Usually is random attempt... if your router have logs, you can try to take a look at the logs...

I do get random attempt on SSH from time to time.. usually from foreign IPs...

and I assume you have port forward 22 -> NAS?
*
would there be sort of marked IPs that I can look in or just wait if someone try access sweat.gif

a bit worried since I'm enabling few things so that I can access the files via internet from office hmm.gif

Personally, I think the best way is to disable all ports except https 443 & http 80 then use reverse proxy with let's encrypt certificates for all your "apps". Helps if you have a domain to configure the dns entries.
*
yes still reading few article on that portion sweat.gif yet to understand it, will be back if got doubt thumbup.gif

Ya, heavy transfer is limitation to QuickConnect. Reverse proxy needs own domain with host, additional cost. Plus need to know how to configure it too.

Since I rarely do heavy transfer I just rely on QuickConnect. When need to do heavy transfer I'll enable DDNS temporarily.
*
Doing the same too until I further understand how to go around sweat.gif notworthy.gif

Hey, thanks for the white paper. Now I understand more how QuickConnect works.
If there's DDNS and DSM port is open, QuickConnect will redirect to DDNS domain.
If there's no DDNS but DSM port is open, QuickConnect will redirect to my public ip.
The problem is even when there's no DDNS, my public ip is still exposed due to QuickConnect will redirect to it.
1 solution I found is port forward unused port such as 5003. When I need direct connection I change DSM port to 5003 and change back to default port when finish use.

If use QuickConnect relay server max speed about 15 Mb/s, good enough for tens of MB files transfer.
*
Maybe I also need to look into this too 😪 accessing the files & folders via browsers not really convenient in the office earlier today 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

is there better & safer way to map my drive over internet 🤔... do I really need an IP address 😅
