I didn't know about Netbird before this.
Looks like good option if want to connect certain devices without opening many ports, but must have public IP or public domain.

tailscale or netbird are some good options. with tailscale there is a package for pfsense so makes it easier to set it up on the router side if you prefer.

alternatively there is cloudflare tunnels also does not expose ports for remote access. and adds an authentication layer for added protection

for homelab setups you can check techno tim's channel he shows how he does his

I used Tailscale before when TM put me behind CGNAT. It was very easy to setup.

some people consider tailscale a privacy issue. so there is headscale for self hosting version of it.

Hey guys. Where do you get your NAS drives from?

The ones from Shopee are tempting especially those from China. They offer 3 years warranty though but i'm sure returns for claim will be challenging.

Anyone tried serverpartdeals before?

OpenVPN or Tailscale for connecting securely back to your local network when you're outside.

Synology own Drive or third party such as Nextcloud as replacement for cloud storage.

Self hosting Bitwarden for password management

Calendar and Contacts self hosting.

Active Backup for backing up your computer

Synology own note taking app or self hosting

Check out the list here for other stuff that you might be interested to self hosting

Vaultwarden is an alternative to Bitwarden that supports the Bitwarden clients and uses less resources.

Jellyfin an open source alternative to Plex/emby

Crazy. You believe this warranty from China?

My NAS spoiled before due to Intel chips problem. Lucky brought from local. 1 to 1 exchange even expired warranty. (It is known to manufacture problem)

have to take into account of shipping and customs.

packaging should be fine because they are renowned for packing very well. so the question is the price for the shipping + customs. And yes they do ship to Malaysia.

They are a better deal for US because free shipping for them but not elsewhere

the recertified which is cheaper than brand new MIGHT be worth it. yes they are used and recertified hence why they resell at a lower price. But some of these could simply just be drives that are resold once they reach a certain time period of a few years. So the enterprise would sell them off regardless whether they have issues or not. so that is what you are most likely buying.

They have a 2 year warranty i believe, so that is something. But if the drive you get is seagate, i'm not sure the rma is covered by seagate, but is by serverpartdeals themselves directly? i'm not sure. If it's seagate, seagate rma is good with free shipping, if not, then you probably have to pay shipping yourself for rma, which could be problematic.

That’s the thing that’s holding me back. It’s a gamble.

There’s a few local Shopee sellers eg Curated PC, 3C selling exos/ironwolf pro. Prices are not bad but I suspect they source from China and from the reviews, seems like they honour replacement/warranty.

$/TB may not be as good as serverpartdeals but at least the returns/replacement is local, unless they MIA after a few years.

Exactly my thought. $/TB is pretty good with 2y warranty. Only issue is the return process if the drives fail.

May I know where you get your NAS drive from?

Had a shocker last week on the DS-2411+.

Out of a total of 12 drives, 1 drive went missing. As a result, the unit had to do a parity check which took 2 days with 10 drives. The missing drive got replaced by a hot spare automatically.

Once done, fucking TNB decided to cut the power and once back after 3 hours, the missing drive came back.

I replaced the drive immediately and now seems ok. It will remain as a hot spare.

The fan mod on the DS-1010+ failed. The CPU fan cannot be modded. The 2 case fans no problem. Haih. Gonna retire this unit once I find another 5 or 8 or 12 bay. Fed up with the email warnings and constant beeping.

shopee. but i recently found out that recertified might not be that bad a deal, so that was why i was doing research on it and found that. so just sharing. i mean, for the same price roughly would you rather get 4tb or a 12tb? (both nas 24/7 drives) put it that way hmm.gif

yes recertified but i think it should be fine if it has some warranty and somebody inspected it before reselling. I've had brand new drives that died within 2-3 years, so it's not much difference in that sense rolleyes.gif

china second hand? i wouldn't risk that. But from a reputable company similar to serverpartdeals i might.

here is another list of apps you could self host
https://github.com/veggiemonk/awesome-docker

this is hardly everything, but it's a glimpse of the kinds of apps you can self host on a nas.

I am aware of serverpartdeals but the customs tax and shipping could be high. I bought 6x 18TB seagate Exos X18 a year+ ago from Taobao, back then no but even with 10% it's not that bad. The drives are refurbished or from data center as well, zero hours (probably wiped) but they were < 1 year old.

All 6 drives are still working fine today. However it was a gamble, also worried that I get DOA drives. Shipping HDD back to China is close to impossible so you weigh your risks.

don't need truenas anymore since you can run alternatives like nextcloud/cloudreve/owncloud on lxc's right
