hi guys. i have a pretty general question on NAS.

NAS basically comes with one or two USB ports. im wondering if these ports are specific for printserver only (because most actually markets the USB for such)? i have a not-so-smart sony LCD TV and i depend on my portable HDD connected via USB to watch movies etc.

do NAS' USB ports function the same? or do i have to get a smart tv so i could access them via network?

at the moment i'm looking at entry level, home use NAS, particularly the D-Link DNS320.
*
Depend what NAS. The USB port can use for printer, ext hdd, ups, speaker and webcam.

QUOTE(Halia @ Aug 31 2013, 12:40 PM)
I just bought QNAP TS220 and have few basic questions (I have searched the forum earlier.  I am not PC savvy)).  My main PC is win 7, plus one in Win 8 and another one with XP, and a smart TV.  I am running the latest 4.xx firmware version and the NAS is connected to Linksys X2000.

My very basic questions are:
1.  Does the NAS needs to be power on 24/7?
2.  How do I know if the NAS is running a realtime behind-the-scene back-up?  I have been searching for this but failed to find any related info.  My main objective is automatic always-on back-up.
3.  What is the best way to import folders from the PC to the NAS ( I tried copy the entire folder, and used the USB one touch but end up at 'jalan mati')?
4.  How to set-up the security?  I read that the security can be based on IP address but I am not sure how this may affect mobile/internet computing.

I know nut about NAS and so far running tons of problem in configuration of it.  I have not found a model specific or instructions that are precise for dummy like me.  Any references are very appreciated

Sorry for asking so many questions.
*
How you buy a NAS if you don't do research first?

1)NAS built to run 24/7.

2)You can check the backup data in the NAS. Is it same as your latest data in the PC. When it fail to backup, it will send a massage to you.

3) map the nas folder. Drag n drop.

I base on general NAS infor. Cause I don't have QNAP TS220.

Hi all, have anyone ever lost data on your NAS due to harddisk failure or file system corruption? I would like to hear it from you and the setup you have when you experienced the failure.
*
For my home, the NAS is in raid 5. So I pull out the problem hdd and replace a new 1. File no corrupt.

For office, probably the NAS will have file corrupt. The symptom is, some file cannot delete. And will hang the NAS. Got to pull the plug to reset it. I m waiting to get a new hdd to replace it. Anyway that hdd already 6yrs old and about time to change.

Your office NAS seems to have an interesting problem. Have you tried renaming or move the problem files to lower folder down the tree before deleting them? Could be due to long filename that OS unable to handle.

Are either of your NAS aftermarket brands such as Synalogy, QNAP etc or own-build NAS? If we can share these info, we may be able to safeguard our data better either by avoiding buying problem NAS models or better data management practices.
*
The NAS seem like can't delete large file or qty of file in 1 go. It crash the HDD and I need to reboot the NAS. Another is, the file is deleted. But the remain empty folder cannot delete and have error message.

I m not sure it is the HDD problem or the NAS fw. To solve the problem, I need to get a new HDD than upgrade the fw.

Both my home and office is using sinology. The data is pretty safe. Either office or home. Even if the NAS is totally gone.

Just wondering whether any of you guys have redundant NAS setup to cater for NAS Failure. NAS protected us from harddisk failure, but once the NAS kaput, that is the unsolvable problem.
*
Yes. My NAS setup is 100% safe. From hardware till software.

That was a good game plan there. My previous NTFS-based box used to be unable to handle Unicode filenames. Had to rename and remove the unicode characters before I could access or delete the files.
*
Don't seems like any Unicode name. Look normal to me.

Bought a new Dns-327L...much better writing speed...around 60MB/s....unfortunately, streaming HD from this device is still a no-no...video will halt momentary every now and then just like the DNS-320l. I don't think it's a bandwidth or read speed not fast enough issue.

If i share a folder from the NAS and stream from my PC using TVERSITY, then there is no issue and can play smoothyly...
This will even use up more bandwidth with data transfer from NAS->PC--->Android Box, yet it does better.

My conclusion: Forget about NAS streaming HD movies....they don't have the processing power to do it or the streaming application sucks.... Haiz...Maybe those high-end NAS will do better.
*
Since this NAS have Dlna or upnp, it should be streaming alright. Try to check along the line. Router, switch etc.

Snology below rm1k, can stream hd without any problem. Even my old Synology just upgrade the fw can do the HD streaming without problem. But not 3d. Since the bitrate for 3d is much higher. (I still haven't solve the 3d streaming problem. Either router or the NAS)

I don't see any speed figure on this NAS in their website.

Depend on your router model, shouldn't be hard to do port forwarding.

Once you have done the port forwarding on your router, then you need to configure your DS213J and install apps on your iOS or Android devices.
For this, refer to this step by step video guide - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsZQV3sSeFY

Bro...this is dlink. ..rm 385..synology cheapest also double the price....
I believe it's the processing power or buffering not enough...no such issue when using pc to stream pointing to the same NAS as mentioned above...

Btw, the file I test above 10GB.
*
Than don't complain. You know that good thing not cheap. If a Synology is rm600+ can do the job, than just save another rm300+.

It is not true that " Forget about NAS streaming HD movies...." I been streaming HD movie from NAS over many yrs. the media player can't hold that much HD movie.

The trouble drive has already been returned to Seagate.

DSM works very well with Apple products.

File is accessed via SMB or Mac file service. You can configure your NAS for time machine backup.

Synology also build apps so your iPhone or iPad can access the file.
*
I always use my iphone/ipad to assist the synology NAS. BT, photo and file manage. But the DS video have limited usage.

If you want expandability, get the DS2413+.  biggrin.gif

[attachmentid=4172422]

Expandability, DS1813+ are more value for money.

The price different for DS1513+ and DS1813+ is RM700. While DS1813+ and DS2413+ is 1500.

Read/write 1513+ and 1813+ is about the same. While 2413+ is lower. Energy consumption for 1513+ - 51w, 1813+ - 75w and 2413+ - 111w.

Does anyone here has successfully configured Synology NAS to work with Maxis Home Fibre Internet?

I have requested from Maxis for public IP and have configured the necessary port forwarding but I am still unable to get the following to work
1) DDNS (registered with Synology)
2) VPN (using Synology App)
3) Download Station to dlwnload YouTube

What else should I configure?

Thanks in advanced.
*
I remember have such a problem when install maxis fibre. Than I call maxis. Said need to do port forwarding in the maxis router. Instruct me step by step. After that the sinology NAS can be detect from outside.

DNS-320L is a good choice to buy? i hope to go for basic NAS first before i try out much more expensive nas...

Usage:
-personal cloud (can access from external net, all nas should be able to be access from external net right?)
-photo and video streaming through ipad, hp etc

Any recommended except DNS-320L?
*
It is better just get the synology. It meet your exactly requirement. They have the photo and video program and apps for smart phone. Easy to use.

Very quite here. hmm.gif

Brought this NAS Synology DS1815+ 3mth ago.

user posted image

It is an upgrade from my old DS409+ which have been using since 2009. It still running find now. Accept the capacity already overflow (6TB max), and probably slow streaming for the HD movie (some).
user posted image

The package include the NAS and 4pcs of HDD red WD 6tb. Give me a capacity of total 18tb for the SHR raid.
user posted image

Setting up and running find now so far.
user posted image
user posted image

It already 29% used. And still transferring my old file to this new NAS. Not sure the capacity is enough for this moment.
