What's wrong with bicycle helmets?

http://bicyclesafe.com/helmets.html

very good read thumbup.gif

excerpt ...

Helmets distract from what's really important: safe-riding skills

Unfortunately, helmets have become a panacea:
Many parents and city & state governments think they can slap a flimsy piece of styrofoam on a kid's head and they've done their part to make sure that kids are safe.

But it's actually the opposite. That approach is akin to outfitting somebody with a flak jacket and then having them run through a firing range.
If you had to choose between giving a child a helmet or the education about how to ride safely, you should choose the education and ditch the helmet every time.

Of course you don't have to choose between one or the other, but the point is that most people are choosing,
and they're choosing the helmet only.

For example, helmet laws are popping up all over the country(USA), but how many of those same jurisdictions are mandating classes in how to ride safely? Almost none.

In Adam Sandler's movie Click, his character sends his kids out biking at night, dutifully decked out with helmets—but no lights! Choosing helmets over lights means that the kids are much more likely to actually die on the road.

And that's what the problem is: A misguided focus, a belief that bike safety begins and ends with putting a helmet on your head.

Yesterday was riding with my friend on tarmac slightly downhill. I am in front and suddenly my fren crashed on head. How it happen according to him he duno why do sudden brake and it flip. (LGS bike).
Had a head trauma, broken teeth, crack finger and and blood from face etc. Blackout for a few seconds.
When I bring him to Clinic, he keep on asking me repeated question such as what day is today, are we riding together, and he cant remember anything except being in the office. (short term memory loss/lapse)
Then after cleaning injury, clinic suggest to go hospital. Go Columbia Asia Bandar Puteri, check by emergency dept (9pm) and ask me to go Sunway Medical as they doesn't have neuro-surgent there. When otw to CA, he finally started to gain back his memory. I thought he is back to norm but nope, it doesn't. Now he keep on repeating what he had jes said over and over again.
Reached Sunway, x-ray arm and found crack on finger and need plastering. X-Ray on head and lucky no problem after being checked by Neuro-surgent. Jes something like head trauma where patient suffer short term memory lost and will be back to normal after a few hours. What he did in short time, he couldn't remember. Admitted for a day for observation.
Later will go visit him again.. Freak me out. Now wan to cycle also takut takut a bit liau..

gud for u! thumbup.gif

ah
guys
wanna know yall opinion
i got chased by a dog in kulim
then tonite when i do my usual balik kerja route
got chased by dog again (de hell?it wasnt ther before)
both incidents at first i tot de dog ony wanna barks at me so i just ignore and keep cycling at cruising speed
it turn out they realy give me a serious chasing (dafuq?)
so i wonder are they realy do harm?
in both incidents i do keep being positive as im not tresspassing their territory (im on de road for gods sake) so i tot they ony do it for fun of barking or chasing
but then they realy chasing me like i have run over their puppy or somting
i wonder if i stop n step off the bike will it attack me?
or if i keep cruising will it bite my shoe/feet off?
cuz just now when it chased me when i approaching a junction n ned to go left
cuz i speed up it turn out im too fast too turn to left and end up going straight
i hate it cuz it makes my ride dangerous
dangerous of having to speed up
luckily my straight is still a road
if longkang leh?
if it is a lorry?
man i hate this
tho im a cat man
but its not dat i hate dogs
doggy, y u no stay diam diam?
haizzz
aniting to prevent de chasing or how to react with de chasing or aniting?
do i ned to giv up de route n take another road to cycle? doh.gif
damn

bro yun,
i noe ur route well, is it along balai polis there ar kena chase?

well, my place here, the dogs rulez the street day and nite,
and as a dog owner ( my mutts don't roam the streets )
i can assure that 99.9% the mutts won't cause u any harm.

they just like to chase and they will chase even big lorries..
some daring ones will try stunts like running along very close to u..

so u don't have to speed up, just keep on riding as usual,
don't stop and stare or shout at them ( it is provoking already )
just ignore them and cycle on...
they just wana lepas stim.. that's all .... biggrin.gif

if u fedap or find it damn annoying, can invest on the AirZound.
utube vids shows it kinda 'stunts' dogs tht barks n chase this cyclist... laugh.gif

haiya dun have to waste time stepping off the bike..
if the dog scared, it will just run away if u shout at it,
it not it will con't to chase once u pedal again, or the next time it sees u... biggrin.gif
best way it to ignore it.. unless its pit bull or rott or smthing liddat,
most of the dogs there, are just street mongrels...

the post pump is dahon's ori pump, i'm not sure if it fits other bikes...
need to check the post diameter...
if u need a pump as backup, might as well just get those mini hand pump...

One advantage of the pump is that it pumps fast and high volume too. I got used to it now although the down side is it's heavier, quite heavy actually. smile.gif
