Hi guys

Would like your personal opinion

Currently I'm in a dilemma in choosing which gaming laptop should I go for.

I'm stuck between asus g series j750x which has been recently announced not long ago with the 4th gen processor or purchasing illegear 15 inch laptop which was recommended by my friend which offers almost the same specification with the j750x

In your opinion which laptop is better?

Thanks guys

1. ??? Y500 is Y500. What downgrade do you mean? Whether it is worth it or not is totally up to you. All we can tell you is that Y500 can handle your usage requirement. Local set that is within your budget is this spec:
Y500, i7-3630QM + Nvidia GT750M(GDDR5) + (1920x1080)@RM2999, 8GB, 1TB, W8, red backlit, swappable ODD, 120w psu, 2 yrs

2. Unless you go for high end gaming laptop using MXM GPU, all GPU in laptop are built in, and cannot be upgraded. Read this:
https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/863032
The thread is a bit old, but is still accurate.

3.
https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/2851949
Read this for things related to Lenovo Y series.
If you're not in a hurry, just wait.

Windows 8 ? Can it run Windows 7 Ultimate ? I heard that Windows 8 is still unstable .
Do they provide CD for installation if I ever format my laptop in the future ?

2. RM2000-RM3000 (not sure with this budget)

3. Mostly work (MS Office, Sound Mixing, Video and Picture editing). At least PC can run PES I am ok.

4. Prefer no bigger than 13".

Additional Value:
a) Battery Life - we have laptop that can run 12-15hrs nowadays?
b) Ergonomic USB Port - Good USB, Audio Jack 'place'
c) Something like Vaio/apple keyboard? If there is backlit on keyboard it is better
d) Best internal cooling system - dual, triple, quadruple fan; you name it

Of course you could install any OS on it you want (as long as you can get all the necessary drivers). But it don't come with W7, you need get your own OS.

Yeah W8 is soooo unstable that those machine of 100 million W8 license holders must be crumbling in dust smile.gif

Lenovo don't provide OD anymore for consumer class laptop, iinm.

Put it this way, unless you are buying business class laptop, which provide W7P using downgradable right of W8P, you could not find new laptop with W7 (directly from brands) anymore.

iinm, for Lenovo, only U series has blue colour, but U series is a bit over your sister's budget.
You could also try to find the older Z480 (which has blue colour), but don't pin your hope on it tongue.gif And even if you do find it, has to negotiate hard since its old listed price is over her budget.

Generally, laptop with colourful shell, for 14", will be ~ RM2k range (e.g Toshiba)
There are a few models from various brand at 11" that has blue, but those are a bit underpowered (with Atom CPU) for your sis usage.

If she go for Dell 14R, she could has a "blue LCD cover" as well hmm.gif

Read this thread.

Short answer is Y410p has ultrabay, which you can hot-swap in / out. But the components are not cheap, and not many re-sellers stock them.

1. Preferred Brand=any
2. Budget=below 5k
3. Usage=run engineering software(CREO,autocad,ANSYS) game only dota 2,PES
4. Preferred laptop/screen size=lighter below 2kg,must i7, must hav ssd, will be used in uk so must hav international warranty(wat brand dat hav good after sale service there?)

juz one quick question, if we add ssd by ourself, is it void de warranty? hmm.gif
*
All brands can provide international warranty. It's just a matter of whether it come standard, or you have to pay more to upgrade standard warranty to international warranty.
After sales service in UK (for most brands) are generally ok, but they don't send technician on site that easily (prepare for remote diagnostic drill tongue.gif )

The engineering software your friend is running could make use of i7 quad core (please note i7 ULV is only duo core) and good GPU.

Your friend really has to think about this. i7 & good GPU, in a small form factor, unless the laptop has good cooling component / design, it's going to be rather uncomfortable (to say the least).

SSD - 256G ~ RM600. Normally users could do the upgrade themselves without voiding the hardware warranty, as long as they don't destroy those "warranty void if removed" stickers.

Closest:

MSI
GE40-2OC, i7-4702MQ + Nvidia GTX760M + (1600x900; anti-glare)@RM3999[1.8kg], 8GB, 750GB(7200rpm), W8
(need to upgrade warranty to International warranty)

www.illegear.com
Illegear RE-13 Pro, i7-4700MQ + Nvidia GTX765M + (1920x1080; IPS)@RM4199[2kg][Onkyo], 4GB, 500GB, FreeDOS [CPU Options: i7-4700MQ - i7-4900MQ]
(but they don't provide international warranty).

Prices are RSP, negotiable.

Alternative:
Get 2nd hand MBP Retina laugh.gif
MacBookPro 15" (Retina Display), i7-3610QM + Nvidia GT650M + 256GB SSD + (2880x1800)@RM6799[2.02kg], 8GB, backlit keyboard, Mac OSX
Run bootcamp to run Win OS that support the engineering software.

If you like 11" with touchscreen, Acer also has:
P3-171-3322Y2G06, i3-3322y + Intel HD + 60GB SSD + (1366x768 IPS;touch)@RM1999, 2GB, W8

R7 - opinion on this is very polarised laugh.gif
It's not light. And being 15" is quite big.
I like the hinge (and its various position combo). And the screen is good.
Some sifus don't like the position of the touchpad. I don't miss touchpad at all (since I'm trackpoint type of guy), and the hinge position encourage R7 user to use touchscreen more.

On screen, you may want to do some research first. And really has to go out and look at the screens side-by-side and see the difference.

HD - this refer to screen resolution (1366x768), the most common resolution. Other common resolution are HD+ (1600x900), FHD (1920x1080). Dictate how much "real estate" available in a screen. In gaming, since FHD has way more pixels than HD, you will need more powerful GPU to push for the same fps.

Matte - vs Glossy. Matte reduce reflection of background light (I can't live without it as I grow older tongue.gif )

Panel - typically you could find TN panel and IPS panel. TN is cheaper. And the cheap TN suffer in terms of colour, contrast, viewing angle. More expensive TN is better in that regards (but you can only tell whether a laptop is using good TN panel or not by looking at the screen or tear it all down and look at the component numbers laugh.gif ). IPS panel is very good in terms of colour, contrast, viewing angle, but is more expensive than TN panel.

Laptop speakers are inherently limited due to size constraint smile.gif

For your budget:
Acer
