1. Preferred Brand - Any
2. Budget - Can spend anywhere from RM4000 to RM6000+
3. Usage - browsing the net, not-so-heavy programming, some games
4. Preferred laptop/screen size - 15''

I am slightly unsure about which budget to tend to this time, as I have always been buying the best hardware I can afford, but not utilizing it fully.

I haven't been playing games for almost a year now, but now I feel the urge of doing so tongue.gif. Games like dota 2, COD, hitman etc

Currently looking at RE-15, RS-15 (8970m) and Lenovo y510.

It is also nice to have a longer battery life if possible, but weight is not much of an issue.
*
Of the games you mentioned, only Hitman is slightly GPU demanding. Dota2 and COD will not test the power of gaming laptops smile.gif

Anyway, you have very good budget.
For you, maybe avoid Lenovo Y series for now, its wireless card / antenna seems to give lots of users headache hmm.gif

www.illegear.com
Illegear RE-15, i7-4700MQ + Nvidia GTX765M + (1920x1080;matte)@RM3599[Onkyo], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), FreeDOS [CPU Options: i7-4700MQ - i7-4900MQ][/color]
Illegear RS-15, i7-4700MQ + Nvidia GTX770M + (1920x1080;matte)@RM5499[Onkyo][3.1kg], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), FreeDOS [CPU Options: i7-4700MQ - i7-4930MX][GPU options: Nvidia GTX780M, AMD HD8970M

Opt for the nice matte screen, go SSD, increase RAM, get the Killer card. Should be good to go smile.gif

hi..
just asking for a friend...

1. Preferred Brand - Any
2. Budget - strictly below RM1.2k
3. Usage - office work and browsing the net.
4. Preferred laptop/screen size - any

thanks..
*
very tight budget for laptop smile.gif
Most probably could only get Intel Celeron / Pentium or AMD E series CPU hmm.gif
But those should handle MS Office nicely, as long the spreadsheet / word doc is not extremely big.
If possible, try to get at least 4G RAM (negotiate with reseller to see if you could get free upgrade), then it will not feel too sluggish when many windows / apps / tabs are opened.

Dell
Inspiron 14-3421, 1007U + Intel HD@RM999[1.99kg], Linux, 2GB, 500GB(5400rpm), 4-cell; W8SL@RM1099
Inspiron 14-3421, B997 + Intel HD@RM1199[1.99kg], Win8SL, 2GB, 500GB(5400rpm), 4-cell

Lenovo

G480, B980 + Intel HD@RM1299, 2GB, 500GB, W8

Prices are RSP, still negotiable a bit. If you buy Dell from Dell Online, can still negotiate by chatting online.

QUOTE(silverjoe87 @ Jul 4 2013, 11:45 PM)
hi there friends. My laptop is old dy  .its been 5years i have been using this HP Compaq CQ40. thinking to buy a new laptop below RM3000.
Confused which type should i get. i would prefer laptop with this specifications :
Intel i7 processor
14+ screen size
8Gb Ram
Windows 8
1Tb HDD
Special Features - Bluetooth, USB 3.0, at least 3 USB ports
Preferable Brands (Asus, Toshiba, Sony)
Good Graphic Card to play PES

P/s : i have search through the net but it seems a lot of models/series which makes me more confused which to get.
it would be very grateful if you guys can help me out with my problem.
Thank You
*
You don't need a "good" GPU to play PES, it is not very GPU demanding smile.gif
i7 - If you are only using it for gaming PES, don't see why you ever need i7 quad core smile.gif Anyway, i7 is expensive, and will take out a big chunk of your budget. So only get it if you absolutely need it. Btw, i7 ULV is only duo core.
8G RAM - you could upgrade after market with reseller, normally will not void hardware warranty. 4G stick ~ RM100, 8G stick ~ RM190+.
1TB HDD - If a particular model only come with 500G / 750G HDD, just talk to re-sellers to see if possible to trade in / swap for bigger capacity HDD. Price difference is so minimal now for HDD (< RM50).

Asus
A45VS-VX028H, i7-3630QM + Nvidia GT640M@RM2999[2.4kg], 4GB, 750GB, W8
A45VS-VX026H, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT645M@RM2199[2.4kg], 2GB, 500GB, W8
K46CB-WX060H, i5-3337U + Nvidia GT740M@RM2199[2kg], 2GB, 750GB, W8, 4-cell, OD
S56CB-XX390H i7-3537U + Nvidia GT740M + 24GB mSATA + 1TB@RM2999[2.3kg], 4GB, W8
N56VB-S3070H, i5-3230M + Nvidia GT740M@RM2899[/b][2.7kg][B&O], 4GB, 750GB, W8

Sony
Vaio SVF14218SGW, i5-3337U + Nvidia GT740M@RM2399[2.4kg], 4GB, 500GB, W8SL; colors: white/black

Toshiba
Satellite L40-AS109Xb/G/W, i5-3337U + Nvidia GT740M@RM2199[Onkyo], 4GB, 750GB, 3 years local warranty; colors: Blue/gold/white
Satellite L50-A100X/XW, i5-3230M + Nvidia GT740M@RM2199[Onkyo], 4GB, 750GB, W8SL; 3 years local warranty; colors:silver/white

Also suggest you look at this:
Lenovo
Y410p, i7-4700MQ + GT750M(GDDR5)@RM2899, 8GB, 1TB, W8, red backlit, 120w psu, swappable ODD, 2 years warranty

Prices are RSP, negotiable.

No 15" from Asus within your budget is worthy for "gaming". So that left you with:

Lenovo
Ideapad G580, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT630M@RM1699, 2GB, 500GB, freeDOS, 1 yr warranty
Ideapad Z580, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT640M@RM2299, 4GB, 750GB(5400rpm), W7HB, white (slightly older model, some resellers are clearing stock selling below RM2k)
Z500, i5-3230M + Nvidia GT740M@RM2299[2.2kg], 4GB, 1TB, backlit, W8; 2 years warranty

Prices are RSP, negotiable.

hi there...thanks a lot  thumbup.gif ...the reason choosing i7 processor coz wanna use it for long time...i believe i5 gonna be outdated after 2 years hmm.gif ...dats y...correct me if im wrong  sweat.gif
*
Nope. Even sandy bridge i5 (i5-2xxxM) will still perform very well in the age of Haswell smile.gif (that's a 3 year old CPU, btw).
i7 quad core is really not necessary for lots of people. Current gen of PES is not even optimised for quad core laugh.gif (can't say for future gen though laugh.gif )
The point to remember is this: your budget is not unlimited. You want to spend money to get the best bang for buck in terms of performance / user experience.
For your budget, GPU is more likely the bottleneck for gaming, not CPU. So you should spend money to get laptop with the best GPU possible.
Then spend money on SSD, for example, since SSD will really "speed" things up a lot, since HDD speed is the bottleneck for laptop responsiveness.

ok ..actually i asked you before, you suggested me Y410P, my mum researched then she saw the word "suitable for gaming" then she fuak me like crazy cos I told her i wont gaming when i go oversea cry.gif
Her face is like  vmad.gif

need you to recommend me again.
1. Preferred Brand - Any except Asus
2. Budget - RM3500
3. Usage - No gaming.  sad.gif  Maximum for Autocad enough. Coding and casual multimedia usage.
4. Preferred laptop/screen size - 11-15"
5. Extra- portable, have high storage and ram upgrade capability. best if has quadcore processor.
*
Sifu TJ has given you lots of good suggestion smile.gif

Just tell your mum this:
AutoCAD, especially doing 3D stuff, need good GPU.
Multimedia, if you do encoding, need good CPU+GPU.
RAM, never go wrong for as much as you could afford.
All adds up, "suitable for gaming", it's just a "side effect" laugh.gif

Screen size: 15" with 16:10 aspect ratio, IPS quality or better

anybody knows what laptop besides macbook pro has 16:10 screen ratio?
*
No. Only MBP has 16:10 15", iinm.
If you want 16:10, just get MBP. Alternative is get a 16:10 external monitor and connect normal laptop.

If you want IPS screen with 15", cheapest is:

Acer
V3-571G-736b8G1T, i7-3630QM + Nvidia GT730M(DDR3) + (1920x1080 IPS) @RM2899[2.6kg], 8GB, 1TB, W8

QUOTE(Styrroyds @ Jul 7 2013, 03:13 PM)
wanna gaming laptop. will mostly be doing ps2 and wii emulation, which can be CPU-intensive.

dont really care about brands. As for specs I find Lenovo y500 to be "ideal". However I dont mind paying a little bit extra for MSI or Asus (or others, really) laptops of equal specs AS LONG as they come with good cooling systems. Budget RM3.5k, which prices Illegear out (I want Windows 8 pre-installed and at least 2 years warranty)
Battery life is not important to me

additional questions :

i) regarding Lenovo's SLI, will it increase temp a lot when i use 2 GPUs?
ii) does size affect cooling a lot? I've heard 15" tend to have more space for heat dissipation than smaller models...

As you can see, I care a lot about cooling because I've had 2 laptops died due to overheating. Will invest in a good cooler (CM U3) this time
*
I don't run ps2 or wii emulator. But iirc, these emulators are not multi-threads optimised (please correct me if I am wrong sweat.gif ).
If the above is correct, then you don't need i7 quad core, just anything Intel with as high single core clock as possible.
The SLI in Y500 will be totally wasted since these emulators will not be able to take advantage of SLI.

i) of course the Y500 run hotter when in SLI smile.gif
ii) You do see big nice gaming laptop with good built-in cooling system normally come in 17" right? smile.gif Yes, size does matter. Internal component layout is important. Thermal paste, fan / heat sink used in laptop. .... 15" is definitely better than 14" for heat dissipation.

If you manage to get your laptop die due to overheating, you must have done something terribly wrong laugh.gif icon_rolleyes.gif
Good external cooling solution (a cheap table fan go a long way), good air flow, periodic maintenance cleaning of laptop fan / air inlet/outlet from dust, re-applying (good) thermal paste ... some of things you could do to prevent the pain smile.gif

true, only 3 cores (max) are used for ps2 and wii emulation. at times i feel my specs are overkill, but

apparently the Haswell processors conserves more power, thus less heat  brows.gif

and hopefully it will last 5 years at least

my laptops died because

i) i was younger back then and didnt gib a shiatz
ii) one of them was a Presario V3000, the legendary overheating machine, the other punya fan just stopped working completely

so 1 question, MSI 14" gaming laptops... do they tend to have good cooling system?

tenkiu  blush.gif
*
Yup, clock for clock, Haswell is more power efficient compared to Ivy Bridge.
But currently there are not much Haswell spec laptop in Malaysia yet. Have to wait a bit smile.gif
For your purpose, a Sandy Bridge i5 will have no problem running those emulators laugh.gif

You mean this one?
GE40-2OC, i7-4702MQ + Nvidia GTX760M + (1600x900; anti-glare)@RM3999[1.8kg], 8GB, 750GB(7200rpm), W8

thermal profile is not good sweat.gif
Is there any specific reason you want 14"? Portability?
For that price, you could get:
www.illegear.com
Illegear RE-15, i7-4700MQ + Nvidia GTX765M + (1920x1080;matte)@RM3599[Onkyo], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), FreeDOS [CPU Options: i7-4700MQ - i7-4900MQ]

But to run the emulators, I would rather do something like laugh.gif
Lenovo
Ideapad G580, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT630M@RM1699, 2GB, 500GB, freeDOS, 1 yr warranty
Then put in a 512G SSD, as much RAM as I want, still < RM3k laugh.gif icon_rolleyes.gif

yup, that one.

i'm not really into 14" (any size is ok really), i just want to know if there are small laptops that are good at heat management.

i do like the RE-15... A LOT... but after customizing it, it would cost 4.3k and that's 1.3k more than the y500 single gpu  cry.gif

i'm not sure if GT630M is good enough? but i'll take that into consideration  nod.gif
*
iirc, ps2 emulator takes a LOT of CPU power. GPU - yeah, GT630M maybe is a bit weak sweat.gif (I was just trying to make a point on wasting money on i7, hope you don't mind tongue.gif )
unfortunately in Malaysia, laptops are generally not very customisable.
To run ps2 emulator, I think your ideal laptop will have:
i5 M CPU with highest clock speed. If ivy bridge, that will be i5-3380M which turbo up to 3.6GHz. But laptop in Malaysia normally come with i5-3210M (3.1GHz) or 3230M (3.2GHz).
The RAM, I think 8GB should be fine.
The storage, 256G SSD could be have for RM600+/-.
Then just spend the rest of budget to get the best GPU possible. Just don't waste money on SLI, cause ps2 emulator could not take advantage of it.

Good luck smile.gif

IMO, alot of mac lovers dislike macbook air because they pride mac alot for being very powerful but macbook air isn't. They'd think that if you wanna get an air, you'd rather go for the conventional windows laptop for they are all less powerful.

But as you stated, there's the pros and cons. And what you should do here is state the high end programs you may be using as a computer student and ask the experts here if Macbook air is powerful enough for them. If it is, then go for the sexy macbook air since it's what you want.

I don't know much about laptops, so I can't help you there.
*
MacBookPro 15" (Retina Display), i7-3720QM + Nvidia GT650M + 512GB SSD + (2880x1800)@RM8699[2.02kg], 8GB, backlit keyboard, Mac OSX
That is basically the most expensive / powerful MBP in Malaysia right now.
MBA/MBP just use the same Intel CPU Nvidia GPU as normal windows laptop. It's definitely NOT "more powerful" in any stretch of imagination smile.gif
What set MBA/MBP apart is the build quality, the Retina Display, branding smile.gif , OSX.

So if a buyer think (perceived) build quality, the great screen, the brand, or the OSX is good for them, go for MBA/MBP.
Otherwise, a normal laptop from other brands with i7 CPU, Nvidia GPU, SSD, will be as powerful smile.gif

do you mean MBA/MBP? With that budget, you could only afford these 13":

But I strongly suggest you wait for Haswell if you are not in a hurry. Most laptop brands (including Apple) should refresh their line-up by 3Q13. (I think the Machine is already taking order for Haswell spec MBA, for example).

btw, in case you decide to blow your budget on Haswell i7 Quad Core, 4700MQ (3.4GHz, 47W TDP) is more powerful than 4702MQ (3.2GHz, 37W TDP) laugh.gif

Now I do realise I have a lot of laptop choices available which is really light as well!! Cool! biggrin.gif Thanks man for quoting the weight of the laptop too. I will start doing my research on these laptops. I am waiting for the haswell laptops as their long battery life is sounds pretty attractive to me. I am attracted to MBA initially due to the 12 hours battery life, I know it does depends on how light/heavy the usage is.

Thank you so much!

The list is actually maintained by TJ sifu and other sifus in this thread:

You can check it from time to time. Sifus will update the list when they get their hands onto latest product price list or brochure smile.gif

1. Preferred Brand - Any
2. Budget - Around RM4000 (i can add more if needed)
3. Usage - Graphic Design, Editing Videos, Magazine, Banners
4. Preferred laptop/screen size - Any size as long as its light and slim

I think you probably will want a FHD screen (1920x1080), a good screen panel (IPS) with proper colour calibration?
For professional video editing, you actually need a pretty good CPU + GPU combo, a SSD (so that video files load up and save fast).
In addition, you are looking for light and slim hmm.gif

Raymond actually point you to the right brand, but maybe you should ask Prince J (he is from illegear) when is the RE-13 going to be released? rclxms.gif

www.illegear.com
RE-13 will have 13" FHD screen, matte screen, IPS panel (you could customise and opt for 95% NTSC gamut panel if you want), illegear provide professional colour calibration, and the CPU+GPU will be powerful enough for your video editing jobs (gaming for you is just a "side effect" laugh.gif ). And you could customise the machine with 256 or 512G of SSD (which make boot up and app / files open and save so much faster). If you are in Klang Valley or certain cities in Malaysia, illegear also provide on site warranty service (good for peace of mind).
All in, should be around your budget.
And oh, if you are interested, illegear could paint the laptop shell with some amazing colour whistling.gif

95% panel should be limited to 15 inch model..

yup, sifu you are right. All w230st re-sellers sites so far does not provide option to customise screen panel tongue.gif
well, IPS (iirc, it's the same used in Asus ZenBook) panel should be pretty good.
