The GPU would be very overkilled for Dota 2, but depending on the subjects of your course, it might come in handy. Same goes to the i7 CPU also~
Whether it is considered light or portable though depends on you

the battery life also improved right? compare to 400.
i scare abit cos this is the first batch of haswell lap from lenovo....
HMMM i add a SSD it will be around 3k+- which is really best bang for buck

With Nvidia Optimus (or GPU switch), the battery life will be better than the Y400
The new processors will be fine, no worries

Yeah, wise choice adding in an SSD, that will reduce loadtimes, heat and weight

You can also consider getting an ultrabook. Offerings from the Acer S7 line or the Asus UX series ultrabooks to name a few

Err... apart from the Fujistu LH772, almost all 14" notebooks don't have numpad. You are going to have to consider 15" or larger notebooks if you strictly want a numpad.
Also, mind sharing your definition of "work"? Office work or professional work i.e. rendering/ photoshop etc.?

4. Preferred laptop/screen size - Above 11" non want below 11"
5. Light Weight and portable. 1KG +/- ...below will be good.

If strictly Lenovo and need to be portable, then you only have the Z400 to consider

Use the remaining budget to extend warranty to 3 years, and upgrade RAM to 8GB, and HDD to SSD
