This is Jake, a siamese cat, already 7+ yrs old..got him from a lil old lady who sold him to me at Petaling Street. He has a kinked tail and the pet shop didn't want him so I got him. rclxms.gif

Here's Angel, local kampung cat, she's 4 yrs old..got her from a family who wanted to give their cat and her litter away at the SPCA. They allowed me to pick one of the kittens to adopt...thus entered the "manja" cat into my family.. sweat.gif

Finally we have Ginger! Local cat, she's only 1 yrs old.. picked her up from across my house when we found her limping and crying. Her front right paw is immobile..can't be used..and as of now, has stiffened and doesn't bother her anymore. thumbup.gif

u can try looking into PAWS as well.. wink.gif

advice if u wanna adopt one? erm, not too sure oso..haha...normally i dun think much about the cat..it's more of if I can sayang them or not..hehe..
mayb choose one with a better temperament..jus in case..cos dunwan to have difficulties later.. tongue.gif

again, it depends on the individual. wink.gif

thanks for thinking of adoption...thanks for giving them a second chance! thumbup.gif thumbup.gif

there's probably an SPCA in every state but the one i know is at Ampang. if u wanna adopt a cat, i would personally suggest u adopt from here or here under adoption category. the cats here are more well taken care of by cat lovers. dun get me wrong, i still support SPCA & PAWS, but the cat lovers r forking out their own money to take care of the cats until they can find find them a new home.

DAViS: o ok... biggrin.gif

cat poo does indeed smells, but... cats cover their poo. my cat lives in my room where i sleep oso. after living with a cat for a while, u'll get used to the smell & if u know the "schedule" when ur cat will poo or pee, u can cover the litter box in between the time when ur cat is not using it.

Cats pee and poo is smelly but Dogs won't be better as well.
If you seeing your cats have some "strange" action/movement, try use a fold of old newspaper cover to the place he/she "in action". How about toilet train your cat?

haha..

my cats all use the litter box..so there's not much of a problem..

i think people are put off by stray cats that poo in their gardens..cos a lot of people were asking me why i keep cats and won't their poo and pee stink?
but i dun have that problem lar..cos they use their "toilet" very well..hehe.. laugh.gif

M2K2Land: i used to have a dog that got along very well with my cat..they both even shared the same water bowl and stuff..hehe..they got close after a trip back to my parents' hometown in alor setar..cos they both had to be in one car together..haha..

dogs are worse , because they leave their poo lying everywhere. Most cats seem to be ashamed of their poo and will cover it. They do pee everywhere ... but then again , so do dogs.

*sigh* it's hard to keep cats when your mother does the cooking outside ...

erm... correction, cats cover their poo so that it wont leave a scent trace to other cats or possible predators. cats also cover their poos if they're not the dominant cat of the area. that's y there are tom(male) cats leave their poo uncovered cos they're the dominant cat of an specific area. as for pee, i rarely heard female cats pees everywhere. only the toms does it to mark their territory... yea, like dogs.

i once saw a kitten, very poor condition, weak and skinny at the swimming pool One U, and there was this samaritan that worked at the swimming pool center bought the kitty some foods from pet wonderland and gave it to the kitty.
i was eating kenny rogers that time and saw it and was thinking to take the kitty home after i finish eating (and shopping).
at the same time, another black kitten came to me and i managed to curi² gave the black kitten some chicken without letting the manager see sweat.gif very kesian the kitten, eat like no tomorrow, too hungry i guess..
unfortunately, after shopping, i went back there, both the brown and black kitty missing pulak..couldnt find them. sad.gif

and i was so angry to ppl who throw them at places like that! vmad.gif no sense of responsibility at all! couldnt they place the cats at proper places like spca/paws?!
how the heck cats going to find foods in shopping mall for god sake?! vmad.gif

yeah, they can find food. but cats do not look for incoming traffic when they're crossing a busy street. if i picture it correctly, the place is easily accesible to the LDP - should the kitty decided to wander off further for food.

i had a kitty died in my arms. as he was happily playing hide and seek with my other cat, suddenly he ran acrossed the road - and a 4WD ran over him. i burst into tears. he was smart, but never look for incoming traffic.

ya lor. the cat food you find at the average RM10 per kilo do bad things to your cat's tummy. it's a fact that these cat food contains dangerous flavouring and coloring that slowly eats their intestines from inside. not to mention their urinary tracts. i lost three persian cats because of this.

hair loss? need to groom them more often.

your garden kena or the floor kena? usually if u have dogs around, cats won't come ..there are oso those sprays and stuff u can get from pet shops..but it works for both cats and dogs.. tongue.gif

mayb it's bcos the smell of the poop is still there even after cleaning up..that's why they come back..

not too sure how to help u...cos after losing my dog..the stray cats come and never leave..and of course..they give us "presents" in the garden.. sweat.gif

(The latter comment may be due to the use of "Madagascar Cat" to mean the Ringtailed Lemur) Mivart had corroborated the statement regarding the Malay cat, of which he said the tail "is only half the ordinary length, and often contorted into a sort of knot, so that it cannot be straightened [...] Its contortion is due to deformity of the bones of the tail," and added that there was a tailless breed of cats in the Crimea.

Miss Lowndes, daughter of writer Mrs Belloc Lowndes, described a Malay kitten recently acquired, along with its mother, from the Straits Settlements. "It has a triple-kinked tail. It is, unfortunately, not of the spotted kind, but these seem to be very rare nowadays." More information was provided by the Director of the Raffles Museum and Library at Singapore "The tail which distinguishes these cats may be clubbed or kinked, very short or of medium length, and the animals themselves of many colours - plain, piebald, or patterned."

The cat fancier and prolific author, H C Brooke, wrote a widely published paper called "The Malay Cat" in 1927. He wrote that the peculiar variety of domestic cat was very little known in Britain and was becoming scarcer in its native habitats, probably due to crossing with long-tailed cats. He noted the possibility that Manx cats were descended from it, citing the Spanish Rock (shipwreck) theory and the prevalence of spotted tabby Manx. Both the Malay cat and the Manx were companionable and "doggy" and a resident in Sumatra had reported to Brooke that it was quite common to see the natives going about their business followed by their cats. "About a quarter of a century ago [1880s] I saw in Holland three beautiful Malay cats, of a sort of drab colour, spotted all over with very clear cut dark brown spots, much resembling those found in some of the Palm Civets. At about the same period, too, some very similar specimens were at the Jardin d'Acclimatation in Paris. The tails of these cats, about three or four inches long, were tightly screwed, or at least the tail formed three complete revolutions. The 'screw' tail, as also the spotted type of colouration, appear to be becoming very rare."

A photograph of a young Malay cat was supplied to Brooke by Mr Boden Kloss, Director of the Raffles Museum in Singapore. Brooke noted that it resembled the Australian cat he had once owned, except that the Malay cat's tail was kinked upwards, while the Australia cat's triple-kinked tail was carried downwards. Mr Boden Kloss was familiar with this type of cat and wrote "A fair proportion of the cats of Singapore seen in native villages are short-tailed animals with a kinked tail. There would [be], I should say, three or four kinks. In colour they may be tabby, or boldly black and white. As a point of interest it may be noted that Felis planiceps [Flat-Headed Cat], one of the wild species of the peninsula, tends to resemble the domestic Malay cat in the matter of tail." Brooke commented that F planiceps was unlikely to be inter-fertile with domestic cats. He reported other sources as commenting that pure Malay cats (that had not been allowed to interbreed with ordinary cats) were said to have a "wild animal odour" most unlike the ordinary domestic cat.

R Shelford, former Curator of the Sarawak Museum wrote in his book "A Naturalist in Borneo" "It may be mentioned here that the domestic cat of the Malays is quite a distinct variety [...] it is a very small tabby with large ears and a body and hindlegs so long that it lacks all grace. The tail is either an absurd twisted knot or else very short and terminating in a knob; this knotting of the tail is caused by a natural dislocation of the vertebrae so that they join onto each other at all sorts of angles." Brooke added that the length of hindleg was a trait shared by the Manx.

Mr H O Forbes had exhibited a Malay cat to the Liverpool Biological Society and showed the cause of the knotting to be the development of wedge-shaped cartilages between the tail vertebrae. Forbes wrote "My remarks referred to the interest I had in exhibiting the creature's skin from the occurrence in the East of what I had noted as extremely common in the cats of Portugal when I lived there about 1876. The kink, I was told was then believed to have become hereditary, from a custom long practised by the Portuguese of pinching or breaking the tails of the new-born kittens, and it would be of special interest if it could be established that the kink in the Malayan cats' tails had been communicated to them through those imported by the early Portuguese into the East. If I can trust my memory the tail of this cat, though short and kinked had the full number of vertebrae, some of them reduced and wedge shaped." Brooke commented that no amount of tail-pinching would cause the trait to become hereditary and that the trait had been present in the Malay cat since at least 1783.

The general type of the Malay Cat reported in the Malaysian peninsula between 1881 and the 1930s, described by HC Brooke and others, and found throughout Malaysia is represented on today's show-bench by the Japanese Bobtail. The colour photo here is of a cat at Lake Chini, near Kuantan, Malaysia. Bobtailed cats in all colours, and with varying degrees of tail-kink, can be found throughout Malaysia and Singapore.

BOBTAILED CATS

The bobtailed mutation is not related to the Manx mutation. It has occurred independently in various geographic areas. It is widespread in Asia and parts of Russia. An Abyssinian Bobtail has been reported in non-pedigree Abyssinian-type cats (location not specified). A Spanish bobtail has also been reported. Cats with knotted, shortened, kinked and pom-pom tails are relatively common in Tenerife and the Canary Islands, the mutation apparently having become established due to the isolation of the gene pool (tourists frequently mistake the trait for breakage). Similar mutation have occurred spontaneously in the USA. There are also bobcat hybrids (and purported Bobcat hybrids) which have inherited the short tail from the wild parent. According to leading feline geneticists, the genes governing tail conformation are located on a mutation hotspot.

According to an earlir anatomist, Sir Richard Owen, and to Professor H N Moseley, the kink in the Siamese's tail (a mild form of the bobtailed trait) was the relic of a prehensile tail, possibly inherited from civet ancestors (though neither civets nor genets had prehensile tails)! Others asserted that the kink was due to intercrossing the Siamese with the "common strain" however Lilian J Veley wrote in 1926 that this could be discounted since there was no other cat known in Siam, "common" or otherwise that had ever possessed an original kink, making it a folly to try to eradicate the trait. Presumably Ms Veley had not encountered the numerous bobtailed and kink-tailed street cats in Thailand. In "Our Cats" of May 1901 there was information on the Siamese's tail from interviews with the King of Siam and his Private Secretary. While the cats in the Royal Palace apparently had no kinks in their tails, occasionally a "tramp cat of Malay origin" strayed in and the resultant crossbred cats had kinked tails.

In 1783, Willian Marsden, Fellow of the Royal Society and late Secretary to the President and Council of Fort Marlborough wrote in "The History of Sumatra" of the Malay Cat: "All their tails imperfect and knobbed at the end." In 'The Variation of Animals and Plants under Domestication", Darwin wrote "throughout an immense area, namely, the Malayan Archipelago, Siam, Pequan, and Burmah, all the cats have truncated tails about half the proper length, often with a sort of knob at the end. [...] The Madagascar cat is said to have a twisted tail." Another writer and traveller, Mivart, had corroborated the statement regarding the Malay cat, of which he said the tail "is only half the ordinary length, and often contorted into a sort of knot, so that it cannot be straightened [...] Its contortion is due to deformity of the bones of the tail". Joseph Train had also mentioned th Malayan cats, comparing them with the Manx: "The Manks rumpy resembles some what in appearance the cats said by Sir Stamford Raffles to be peculiar to the Malayan Archipelago." Sir Stamford Raffles' name is closely associated with Singapore.

HC Brooke reported seeing three spotted tabby Malay cats in Holland in the 1880s and some very similar specimens at the Jardin d'Acclimatation in Paris around the same time. "The tails of these [Paris] cats, about three or four inches long, were tightly screwed, or at least the tail formed three complete revolutions. The 'screw' tail, as also the spotted type of colouration, appear to be becoming very rare." In 1889, Mr O Gould had apparently taken four Siamese to Ceylon and soon Ceylon was "overspread" with their progeny, known as "Gould's Cats" and many had kinked tails in spite of there being no Malay cats for them to interbreed with. Lilian J Veley wondered if the Malay cat's kink had come from the Siamese rather than the other way round (she considered the Siamese to be the older type). She also implicated the Korat "a blue variant of the Siamese, to which our 'blue-pointed' freaks are due."

R Shelford, former Curator of the Sarawak Museum wrote in his book "A Naturalist in Borneo" "It may be mentioned here that the domestic cat of the Malays is quite a distinct variety [...] it is a very small tabby with large ears and a body and hind-legs so long that it lacks all grace. The tail is either an absurd twisted knot or else very short and terminating in a knob; this knotting of the tail is caused by a natural dislocation of the vertebrae so that they join onto each other at all sorts of angles." The length of hind-leg was a trait shared by the Manx, leading some cat-fanciers to believe that the two were related.

Miss Lowndes, daughter of the novelist Mrs Belloc Lowndes described a Malay kitten that she had acquired. It had recently arrived, along with its mother, from the Straits Settlements. "It has a triple-kinked tail. It is, unfortunately, not of the spotted kind, but these seem to be very rare nowadays." More information was provided by Mr Boden Kloss, Director of the Raffles Museum and Library at Singapore "The tail which distinguishes these cats may be clubbed or kinked, very short or of medium length, and the animals themselves of many colours - plain, piebald, or patterned." He also wrote "A fair proportion of the cats of Singapore seen in native villages are short-tailed animals with a kinked tail. There would [be], I should say, three or four kinks. As a point of interest it may be noted that Felis planiceps [Flat-Headed Cat], one of the wild species of the peninsula, tends to resemble the domestic Malay cat in the matter of tail." The cat writer HC Brooke, who had an interest in the Malay cat, wrote that F planiceps and the domestic cat were unlikely to be inter-fertile.

Mr H O Forbes had exhibited a bobtailed Malay cat to the Liverpool Biological Society and shown the cause of the knotting to be the development of wedge-shaped cartilages between the tail vertebrae. Forbes attempted to link the Malay bobtails to the bobtailed cats found in part of Portugal. In the 1920s, Forbes wrote "My remarks referred to the interest I had in exhibiting the creature's skin from the occurrence in the East of what I had noted as extremely common in the cats of Portugal when I lived there about 1876. If I can trust my memory the tail of this cat, though short and kinked had the full number of vertebrae, some of them reduced and wedge shaped." Others disputed his theory as the trait had been reported in the Malay cat since at least 1783 and no amount of tail-pinching would cause the trait to become hereditary! user posted imageKuantan, Malaysia. Street cats from Singapore and Johor Bahru (the town at Malaysian end of causeway to Singapore) showing the typical bobbed or kinked tail of local felines.

The bobtail trait ranges from a normal-length tail with a distinct kink, through to a short twisted pom-pom and just about anything between those two extremes. The degree of kink is variable and the vertebrae are affected so that the tail cannot be straightened. It is often possible to feel a bony knot inside the kink where vertebrae have fused. The bobtail mutation is widespread throughout Asia, extending as far as Russia. It is well know that early Siamese cats had kinked full-length tails and this is still seen in Siamese-type cats in Thailand, but has been bred out of pedigree Siamese cats. Colourpointed cats were kept by Thai royalty and legend has it that a princess entrusted her rings to a palace cat while she bathed. She threaded them on the cat's tail and the cat knotted its tail so the rings did not fall off. The kink therefore marks where it knotted its tail. Unlike the Manx mutation, there appear to be no detrimental effects.

There are tales associated with the Asian bobtailed cats. One (Malaysia) is that if a kittens tail is cut off and buried under the doorstep, the cat will not stray from home. Another is that monks cut the tails off of cats so that the cats do not go to heaven. A cat with a stumpy tail is not perfect and imperfect creatures cannot go to heaven. I examined a tabby cat brought back from Japan whose owner claimed that its tail had been cut off by monks during kittenhood. I found evidence of knots and kinks in the remnant of tail which told me it was a natural bobtail. Also, the tail ended quite normally in a black tip. This was a perfectly normal genetic bobtail, though the owner preferred to think she had rescued an abused cat.

In 1988, the Cat Association of Britain finalised the standard for the "Oriental Bobtail"; a cat of oriental (or foreign) conformation and coat, but with a bobbed tail. Since then, little or nothing has been heard of this breed.

The most famous bobtailed breed is the Japanese Bobtail found in both shorthair and semi-longhair varieties. This is due to a recessive gene. It has appeared in ancient Japanese art and has evidently existed back as far as the 6th. It is claimed that it was introduced into Japan from China at that time, which corresponds to Ida Mellen's account of curly tailed cats in China. Once the pet of Japanese nobles, it eventually spread to the general population but was not considered anything more than a common moggy. It attracted the interest of American breeders in 1968 and was recognised in the US in 1978. The longhaired version had always existed (longhair is due to a recessive gene) but was not given breed status until 1991.

Distinguished by its bobtail and high-cheekboned triangular face. Close-lying, silky short hair. The tail is 10-13 cm in length if fully extended, but due to the kinked structure it appears only 4-7 cm long. The tail hair often grows straight out in all directions, giving it a rabbit-like fluff-ball or pom-pom appearance. In Japan it is found in all colours including agouti (Abyssinian pattern) and colourpoint though these are not accepted in the Western fancy.

In 2001 a Singapura Bobtail was reported in a breeding programme. The bobtail kitten appeared in a Singapura litter, tracing back to a part-tailed foundation cat. Inbreeding can cause recessive genes to reappear. The kitten initially appeared to be tailless, but proved to have a stumpy tail similar to that of the Japanese Bobtail. This is not surprising since there are numerous bobtails in Singapore.

The bobtail trait is also widespread in parts of Russia (probably the same recessive gene mutation as the Japanese Bobtail though this is unconfirmed) and following the break with communism, a cat fancy developed in Russia and several bobtailed breeds are under development.

The Karel Bobtail (Karellian) is a shorthaired/semi-longhaired breed which occurs naturally along the coasts and islands of Lake Ladoga. The mutation is claimed to be identical to the Japanese Bobtail. These are elegant, svelte cats with lifted rumps and short pompom tails (4-13 cm). The Kuril Bobtail (Curilsk) is smallish, compact and cobby with a short (5-13 cm) "bob" or "pompon" tail . It has shorthair and semi-longhair forms. The Thai-Bob (Thai Bobtail) is a medium-sized Russian breed resembling the Traditional style (Apple- or Round-head) Siamese in all non-mitted colorpoint varieties. The tail is short (3-11 cm), bobbed and its outline is smoothed by the coat. The Toy-Bob or Toy Bobtail (1986) is a Russian miniature breed, no larger than a normal 3-4 month kitten. Toybobs have short, solid bodies and excellent muscles, with short straight or curved tail-remnant (3-7 cm), straight or corkscrewed, covered with fur in a "pompon" or "brush" effect. All of these were recognised in the 1990s, but apart from the Toy-Bob have existed for far longer.

Confusingly, there is another variety known as a Thai Bobtail. It is a naturally occurring bobtailed variety of Oriental/Burmese type. These are mostly, but not exclusively, colourpointed and are found in Thailand and Malaysia. The Malay Cat reported in the Malaysian peninsula in 1881 and found throughout Malaysia is similar to Japanese Bobtail, but has not been adopted as a formal breed.

The second officially recognised bobtail breed is the American Bobtail bred from a foundation cat discovered in the 1960s in Arizona. This is a dominant gene mutation. It occurs in shorthair and semi-longhair varieties and has a powder puff tail up to one third normal length. It was reputed to have bobcat blood (based on purely circumstantial evidence), but it may be a Manx-type mutation since some lines produce a range of tailless, rumpy, stumpy, longy and kink-tail cats. To avoid mixing up different mutations, the American Bobtail is never bred with either the Manx or the Japanese Bobtail. This is the official American Bobtail breed, however the trait has evidently occurred independently several times. The Sno-Bob is a colour variety of American Bobtail. It apparently resembles the Alaskan Bobcat being pale in colour with darker ear tips and darker bob-tail.

In 1940, American zoologist Ida Mellen wrote "The American Domestic Bobtail Cat of the New England and Middle Atlantic States (called the Rabbit Cat) traces its ancestry to the Manx cat, but the distribution of tailless cats is wide, covering the Crimea and other parts of Russia, the Bismarck Archipelago, the Malayan Archipelago, Burma and Siam" However nothing more has been said about the purported American Domestic Bobtail and it may have been no more than a few isolated Manx cats. The cats from Malaya, Burma and Siam are related to the Japanese Bobtail rather than the Manx.

There have been claims of an American Bobtail cat breed which resulted from bobcat/domestic cat crosses in the late 1970s. The breeder indicated that bobcats will mate with female Siamese cats because the scent of a Siamese female in season resembles that of a sexually receptive female bobcat. Bobcats can and do mate with domestic cats to produce at least some fertile offspring.

The Si-Bob (Si-Bobtail) is not a formal breed. It is the colloquial name for colourpointed cats of Japanese Bobtail or American Bobtail type. These are not recognised as part of the main breeds and their breeding is not actively encouraged, but they are attractive crossbreds not unlike the Thai Bobtails. Si-Bobtails occur naturally in Japan.

The PixieBob (1995) was, and sometimes still is, reputed to be derived from natural bobcat/domestic hybrids and to have inherited its tail from the bobcat. It is a polydactyl (extra-toed) breed derived from "Legend Cats" and in some respects it resembles a bobcat. The presence of bobcat genes has not been confirmed though the cat certainly resembles the wild species in several respects. On the one hand there is a persistent tale of "Legend Cats" - cats that are the result of natural cross-breeding between the two species. On the other hand there are cat fancies that refuse to recognise hybrid breeds. This leaves a few PixieBob enthusiasts both promoting the Bobcat influence (some claiming 25% bobcat blood) and simultaneously playing it down! Apparently genetic markers for the Bobcat do not show up in modern PixieBobs, although this may be due to the genes being diluted by several generations of backcrossing to domestic cats.

There is an unconfirmed version known as the Munch-Bob which is a Munchkin/PixieBob cross to produce a short-legged bobtail. In theory, any of the bobtailed or tailless breeds could be used to produce bobtailed/tailless Munchkins.

Not to be confused with the PixieBob is the Poly-Bob (1998) which is linked to the infamous Twisty Cats (cats bred for detrimental deformities). Poly-Bobs are not a recognised breed. They are bobtailed polydactyls which carry the harmful form of polydactyly which also causes gross deformities of the foreleg and front paws, including vestigial, absent or deformed leg bones and flipper-like forelimbs. No attempt has yet been made to eliminate these harmful effects and they represent the darker side of cat breeding (See Polydactyl Cats). Occasional tailless cats suggest a Manx-type mutation in which case the breeding line contains semi-lethal genes as well as genes for gross deformity.

The current trend to developing hybrid domestic breeds by crossing domestic cats to wild species may have contributed the bobtailed trait to one or two American cat breeds. In the American Bobtail the evidence is anecdotal and based purely on the cat's appearance, in the PixieBob it is unconfirmed. In the following, the hybridization is deliberate.

The next group of bobtails are the "Lynx" group of bobcat hybrids developed during the 1990s. The American Lynx is a bobtailed spotted shorthair derived from bobcat/domestic crosses. The Desert Lynx is an Manx/bobcat hybrid (some early advertisements stated Abyssinian/bobcat) with 12.5% bobcat (i.e. bobcat within last 3 generations) and the tail types range from rumpy-riser to hock length. The Desert Lynx comes shorthaired and semi-longhaired varieties. The Highland Lynx is a hybrid of Jungle cat hybrids and bobcats. The Jungle Bob is a mix of F chaus (Jungle Cat) and PixieBob producing Jungle Cat type cat with a bobbed tail. There are also Bengal/Bobcat hybrids in existence.

As well as the main groupings of bobtailed cats, the trait crops up elsewhre through random mutation. In the 1980s a "Spanish Bobtail" was reported, though the exact location in Spain was not given. In 2004 I received information on a localised strain of bobtailed cats in one part of Spain. According to Russell Meyers, a bobtail mutation has become fixed in cats around the Spanish villages of La Drova and Barx in the mountains in the Gandia area near Valencia. There he encountered two kittens with deformed tails. one, a male called Stitch, had a half-length tail that bent back upon itself. The other, Milo, had a knobbly bit at the end of her tail. The trait is known in the area as "Barx tail", Barx being a neighbouring village. Meyers came across a large number of cats in the area with similar tails. The most likely scenario is that a tomcat carrying the mutation fathered most of the kittens during one or more breeding seasons. He was not necessarily the cat in whom the mutation originally occurred, but by fathering the majority of kittens his genes - including the mutation - would have become widespread and the trait would have shown up in later generations through inbreeding.

In 2006, TICA proposed to clamp down on certain breeding trends including new bobtailed breeds created by crossing existing breeds together. Their Genetics Committee report stated: "The Committee proposes that TICA does not accept any proposed breeds for Registration Only status that do not exhibit novel mutations. The current mutations would be reserved for currently recognized breeds exclusively. This would end the seemingly endless applications for "munchkinized" new breeds, and then deter the inevitable introduction of "rexed", "Bob-tailed" and Poly-ed" everything else."

bringing the cat to the vet is the best solution, and u'll feel more happy bout it too instead of jus guessing what's going on.

Check out St Angel at Equine Park - behind jusco (seri kembangan). The stuffs thr are quite cheap as they're all 15% off. I guess it's the lowest price u can get icon_rolleyes.gif. I bought "whiskas" canned food for only RM2.70 there. Elsewhere including carrefour is selling for RM3.20.

For pregnant cats, you can use a good quality kitten food such as Royal Canin, Eaglepack, Back to Basics, Avoderm, Nutro etc.

There's a pregnant stray cat that hangs out in front of my shop and I took her in the day before when I found someone who can foster her. She is a very pretty and sweet tricolour tabby. Yesterday she attempted to give birth but only half the amount of kittens managed to come out. The other half was stuck.

They tried to manually stimulate the cat to give birth further with medication and injections, but the efforts were in vain. She needs a ceasarian badly. We're looking at easily RM800 to RM1000.

Anyone willing to donate to help her please contact 0126165997. Thankyou for your help.

1) they're just like any other normal cat - depending on them even some cat has irridation stomach due to germs n etc.. so tak good care of your cat/dog
2) cat's poo stinks - yes that depends on their food, but their poo stinks compared to dogs. that is y u need to provide litter box, and cat are pretty embarassed with their poo/pee, they always want to hide it
3) train? u mean toilet train? well it's their nature, just provide a litter box with good sand, (pls dont get those small rounds if ur cat is a small kitten, some breeders i known, their kitten died-got chocked)
4) normal cat food- those kibble will do especially brands like royal canin n etc
5) not really. depends but pls send them to vet for vaccinations and make sure they are fully vaccinated, check for ear mites n etc. cat do have disease so do some homework before getting one
6) persian cat does not poo???? oh come on, where does all the food goes then? ofcoz they poo but most kitten persian does not know well to groom themself so, some poo might leave stain, u have to wipe/clean it (best to trimmed the fur) once they grow older, no problem at all.

btw, talking about persian cat, bare in mind i've seen many petshop written PERSIAN CAT but they could not provide the purebreed cert to varify. i say this because many Domestic Long Hair cat are marked as persian cat in many petshop. persian cat has flat face. do some reading at www.cfa.org 'coz i know they're selling persians at high price ard 1k above. trust me, a petshop at sunway (i wont put the petshop name) selling their persian which is a DLH at a price of 1.8k !!! i was shocking.gif

yeah, go for Royal Canin etc. three of my persian cats died of urinary tract infections. two of them were 9 (human) years old when they passed, the other was only 3 years old.

some vets said the cause of the infection is the cheap food i gave them cry.gif the food has too much coloring, salt and artificial flavors. which made me to believe that persian cats' digestion system is more sensitive than others. my abyssinian cat still lives on the cheap food (i'm not rich enough to serve him luxurious cookies), and he's turning 6 this year.

em.. well i usually dont advice ppl to give 2nd gred to your pets.
imagine, would u want to give 2nd best for your babies? i'm not being kiasu, before having pet, u must make sure u r fit to afford yourself first. if u need companion, perhaps a small pet that could fit your budget.
just my 2 cent.

Hello cat fans... smile.gif

I got a question here.

I got a cat here...i decided to adopt it since my neighbour dis-own them.I gave them the best food that i can think off...frikies as a food and milk as a drink. The problem is now, these cats like to scratch at my carpet. So i want to ask you guys(cat expert),what can i do to prevent them from scratching my carpet.I've scold them and hit their paws tongue.gif but nothing works...they just keep scratching my carpet. And to make things worsen,my mum is very pissed off with these cats already.

get a box , or some eggholders(the cardboard ones) . cats love them. They're scratching their claws. If they're indoors you need to give them something to scratch on. or better still , buy a cat scratching pole biggrin.gif only if the cats really OWN you

oh , and milk gives them diarhhoea . cats can't really digest lactose unless they're very young. giving too much milk can lead to disease later on.

there is animal milk sold in tesco and carrefour and pet safari.

Say if I stay at an apartment and I close all the doors so that the cat will not go wandering about, will it get frustrated/mad and start to tear the place down? Or would it jsut be bored and go to sleep.

depends. If the cat is clever enough, it will search for any opening and go out, and will come back to greet you, knowing that you have no idea what it had done......

Cats are society and adventerous animal. the last thing you want to do really is to lock him up, unless it's a rare breed. even then you need to have a yard for it to wander around. Which reminds me, cats are adaptable creature, as shown by one of my cats went missng years ago when he fell asleep on my neighbours car as she went to buy food. She noticed him still sleeping when she was buying, but he was gone when she went back cry.gif. they are actually easier to take care, and can eat anything if trained. Mine eats rice with fish (protein high, if you can find a good mix for the cat, can have really fluffy fur woo) and can even eat odinary human food like durian, biscuit, etc (not recomended, as they can end up with a stomach ache and a bad case of puking). My house in kampung has a big yard, and a large rubber plantation behind it, thus we let them loose in there really often. and when it's late, we just call them, if they know your voice, it will come no matter where it is (blame it on the food. It associates your voice with food really)

I usually left to the kitten mommy. the smell is what makes the cat mom knows which is her kitten. and also, they are too small to survive a bath.

Some more pics of my other cats
This one is Ucang. The same age as Oneng, probably 1 1/2 years old.
Although Ucang and Oneng were born from different mother (but the same father I guess because back then there's only 1 big male cat around the house), they are like best buddy laugh.gif

We did a few snap before we have this nice pics laugh.gif

Anyway, Oneng likes to take photo. He's very photogenics.

Hi there,
Usually deworming charges ranged from RM5 to RM8 per tablet n depending how heavy is ur cat, a recommended dosage will be a tablet for every 4kg. So, if ur cat is about 2kg, then it needs to take only half tablet.

hope the info helps

what u have to do when a cat run away ? i already search the entire house and a few blocks from my area. but didn't see.

i already put some her favourite tuna in the food bowl and place it near the gate. she can jump over the lower part of the gate.

is there any other way ?

OMG..exactly like my cat! shocking.gif

his name is Yunie. my wife thought he was a girl back when he was a baby, but when he grows up, we can see huge balls..HUGE...too huge for a girl. but he already know that is his name. when he is called he will meow and run to us. he cant sleep alone, he is afraid. when ever my me and my wife watch tv, he will curl in front of us. when we go to sleep, he will sleep on my wifes vanity chair. if we quietly creeps out of the room leaving him, he will wake up and meow like crazy..maybe cursing us..LOL. there was this one time, we left him sleeping on the couch one nite and we went inside the room and shut the door. he woke up and started crying and scratching the room's door. so now he evens sleep between me and my wife doh.gif

haha ... i noticed that most male cats are thinner than the females at birth ... maybe it's just those i have. best is to get a litter, usually the female ones are wary and the males ones are curious. first to make contact with me is usually a guy.

hehe maybe you only attract guys.

my persian cat never gotten to know how to handle her newborns, so i had to become her (so called) 'midwife' for her 4 deliveries. her kittens were never skinny, all are chubby-chubby and you can't really tell if they're male or female.

the key is their personality. i never met a female cat who was curious and inquisitive. maybe because i have only street cats, so they're taught from birth to be wary of indonesian workers who eat cats. even after 2-3 years of domestication, female cats are still shy of neighbours, while the male cats simply walk up to any stranger they see and glare at their disobedience.

Wow.... are you really gonna get a cat for Rm1350? Coz you see.... most of the petshops are not selling pure persians.... many are in fact a mixture.... Why not you survey a bit at kitten.com.my/forum
Sometimes can find some good quality cats there. If you are willing to spend about RM1k plus, then there are some members there selling pure Maine Coon cats with certs....

the 2 coloured eyed cats are called bi-coloured eyes.... you cannot breed those out, is by nature.... anyway, go survey abit at kitten.com.my or check adpost.com for more. Avoid petshops... later get mange and fleas...

U better take a kitten from a breeder as they are confirm to be healthy, litter trained, used to hair dryer.. u can get a cert if u wan to.. its a pure breed.. usually pet shop didnt sell a pure breed.. non pure breed we call Domestic long/short shair.. it cost around rm200-350.. breeder usually let go their cat with 2 vaccinated and 1 dewormed..

here the list of the breeder..

hey there

does anyone here bring their cats out for a walk?

how do u actually train a cat so you can bring it out for a walk? I've done some reading and most site states that to start things off, we would need a harness and a leash for the cat.... anyone tried this yet?

thanks

:3 cats can get enough exercise at home

you just need to play with your cat 30mins a day or so.

then it will be okay..

btw. walking..; <- my dream cat will be a walking cat!

Your cat needs to get use to leash first.

( recommand body ones not neck one )

and you just need to do it slowly.

but its quite a bit of work really.

coz.. when your cat gets use to the walking stuff.

=_= your cat will really badly want to go to walk.

so nicer to keep them at home

i think its better for cats do be in indoor biggrin.gif

Its safe for them and less dangers.

Like sometimes those cats

who go outside and come back..

some cats donnoe how to move aside when doh.gif car comes.

and BANG.

Like those cats going out doors sometimes they fight with

stray cats : ( don wan that right?

coz if they get injured its realli bad.

For walking right?

they will be really eagr to get out of house

when they think it's their area.

so.. since Bella isn walking cat..;

im just pleased that she preferes to stay inddors.

safer at home~ biggrin.gif home sweet homee~

i just faced a sad, unwanted and unexpected situation.

1 old female cat came to my house, its physical looks fine, but suddenly my mom saw her with 2 newborn babies..but its physical didnt show any sign of pregnant anyway..
so we all got shocked, but nevermind, we placed her and her babies inside the cage, then after she cleaned the mess, she went out (perhaps to find some food or jalan2)

and suddenly, she didnt came back for 1 day..we feel worried about her babies, keep "miow"ing becoz of hungry..

so i went out and bought a milk that suitable for kitten and newborn babies and the nursing pet stuff..but when i come back home, the 2nd died already.. sad.gif

then we nursed the 1st child, and seems like he/she (dont know the sex yet) can managed to survive..so we kept on nursing and took care all we can..

2 days waiting, her mom didnt even bother to come..

suddenly, her mom came back, thats a good news..we brought her to her baby, but she refuse to give milk..she didnt even want to approach her baby, nor clean it..she just came to find some food..when the baby approach her stomach, she refuse and ran away..
i dunno why, perhaps the baby got our smell already..

and then as expected, the first child couldnt last longer..
he/she died during the night when we was sleeping..
i found it already hard and got ants on it on the morning..so sad.. sad.gif

i personally own a cat, and i never faced such situation..even stray cat oso took care her children carefully..

1 thing i couldnt understand is, why did she refuses to come back and take care of her children?

My kitten is fine now smile.gif Im so glad...sweat.gif He was stressed out earlier because i was told that this kitten actually had a lil sister. They had always been together. When i bought this fellow,he got separated with his sister,he misses his sister and got really stressed ,plus the new enviro, makes it hard for him.
But now,
he's very happy and rather playful too. rclxms.gif I will post his picture soon. wub.gif

Just a thing ,when he got diarrhea last time. The doctor told me to give him boiled chicken. So,thats what i did. And,since he's getting better and no more diarrhea,i am to give him those cat food back. But the problem is that,he refused to eat any cat food and he only wants boiled chicken.I even mixed the kibbles with boiled chicken and he doesn want to eat it at all. How can i make him eat cat food again??

And is canned food good for cats??
thanks~

I also have a Persian behaving the same way. In fact she didn't even bother to remove the umbilical cord and the placenta (normally, cats would eat that thing). So the babies were still hanging with their cords.

As it was the first we've encountered such things, my mum called her friend who is a doctor (for human patients), and she told us to go to her clinic (for human patient) which is not far from our house.

What she did was, she tied the cord tightly with string threads and cut it with scissors. (at that time, the other human patients were still blur tongue.gif ) Well, although she managed to remove the cord, but the Persian mum still don't want to give milk and eventually all the babies died cry.gif .

After a few months, she gave birth and still didn't remove those cords doh.gif . But since we already know how to remove it, we dispose it ourselves. Although she still didn't give milk to her babies. What we did is we kidnapped her babies and gave them to another cat which were still giving milk. Luckily that cat accepted the babies and all the babies were healthy grown biggrin.gif .

It would be best if you at least give them dry food too if you want give canned foods. My vet advised me not to depend on canned food only as it would cause their teeth to weaken. They need at least have something to chew (like biscuits) so their teeth can develop properly and become stronger.

Use the soap you wash plates with. Get the lemon or lime kind... but make sure don't make the soap enter the eyes and really really wash till no soap on the body. You will need to use your nails to really scrub your cat. The soap will strip away natural oils so what you do is bath with the dish soap first, then after everything is clean and you can't feel any oily stuff on the cat, you apply a thin layer of hair conditioner..... Also, once your cat is dry, rub and brush your cat's fur to stimulate the natural oils in her skin to protect the fur.

Yah... get the liquid washing soap. Quite safe coz people use the dish washing soap to clean birds that involve in oil spills in the sea.

hey, 1 question bout cat. Well, i had this stray cat, which was pregnant which often come to my place for food. we feed it, n even prepare a place outside my house for it to give birth. n yesterday, it give birth outside (since the door is lock durin the night when the cat is outside) but when we open the door, the cat bring it's kitten to our store room (which located under the stair) n place its 5 lil kittens there. So, do i let the cat choose the place? since we are fine with where it locate it coz it doesnt interfere with our daily life, just that i worry me a lil, since that place seem pretty dusty.

n how long does it take for the new born to grew into 'safe' state. so far the newborn still cant open its eye. kinda newbie in this type matter.

n how long does it take for the new born to grew into 'safe' state. so far the newborn still cant open its eye. kinda newbie in this type matter.

The female cat has taken a liking to you, trusting you too. So let it have the room as it's hiding space. Cats normally like to hide away from people and other cats.... this is the reason why some cats give birth in the roof too. Feels safe to them. If it doesn't bother you, just let her be. You can feed her with more high protein stuff..... the kittens will be ready for new homes once they reach 2 months old but they will open their eyes in 2 weeks after birth and will start to crawl... later on they will be jumping about at 1 month and at 2 months old, they will be fully independent from their mom.

taken from wikipedia.org:

"The gestation period for cats is approximately 63-65 days. The size of a litter averages three to five kittens, with the first litter usually smaller than subsequent litters. Kittens are weaned at between six and seven weeks, and cats normally reach sexual maturity at 4-10 months (females) and to 5-7 months (males)."

Pure persians come with certs and are from direct breeders... normally costing RM1k sometimes.... those RM300 to RM600 are not pure persians... they are just a mix breed that petshops or some people call persians because their fur is long..... Domestic Long Haired is more likely. 1 of the parent may be a pure and the other a mixbreed or both parents also mixbreeds but with long hair... the price varies according to colour, features and quality.

your BlackieBlackBlack remind me to our kitten named Mick Mick..

my room mate and i rear this kitten started when we found him in frount of our room, and frecuently came and entered our room.. every time when he heard/ saw we open the door, he will run and enter to our room..

later we decided to rear that kitten since he was alone.. we sleep together.. and we trained him poo and pee at the container provided.. and most interesting thing, when we call his name he will run to us.. smile.gif

maybe it is easier to us to teach them how to poo & pee when they are still younger..
at the beginning, we only used sand and pour in the container, then we put some of his najis their.. later he himself know where to poo and pee..

force fed them.
only milk formulated for kittens.
NEVER give milk intended for human unless the milk is lactose-free.
use pet bottle. they will resist but just force the milk in.
EVERY 2 HOURS. they need a lot.

anyway, if anyone has bengals, they will swear this isn't made up. for those of you who havent seen one. . . well , it may be hard to believe. But trust me, they do chirp.

this one might be a bit more believable in case you doubt it ...
