I have my eyes on the DELL VOSTRO 5460/i5-3230M/4GB/500GB/14"/2G/W8/SILVER version. Been using Acer Aspire 2920 for 5 years and thinking of an upgrade.

Can this laptop play games? Pretty much the only "graphic-intensive" game I play is Civilization V. So whether or not this laptop can play the game can make or break the deal for me.

This is the recommended system requirements for CIV

So I think Vostro 5460 meets the requirements of CIV beside processor maybe.

Receive my 5460 in 5 days.... I thought it was 2 weeks. So I guess the news on Dell clearing old stock is true. Anyways I truely love this bargain ultrabook.

So since yesterday I have been seting up my ultrabook which takes some time since I am installing via network dvd-drive. Sadly I didn't get the external optical drive that was given free to first 100 customers only.

A problem for me is my original games that require a dvd to to play. Do I need to buy an external dvdrom just to play games? Any other solution guys?

XPS13 is very good, but also burn a much larger hole in your pocket. Go for it if you can afford it smile.gif
Yup, this is practically the lightest 14" around now (of course the Thinkpad X1 carbon is lighter but that thing cost > RM5k).

Built quality wise, XPS12 / 13 is much better.
Budget conscious will go with 5460 smile.gif

Aww, no more free external optical drive? That's sad. I suppose you ordered from the Dell website?

As for the games, you can try buying games online from Steam www.steampowered.com. Just set up an account, purchase the games online (the site is having a Summer Sale now - they have lots of sales each year), and then you can install the games you've bought from the Steam program. It's easy and you don't need a DVD drive. Steam will store your purchases forever, so you can reinstall the same game in a different PC/laptop. You just need a Visa, Mastercard, Paypal or some means of purchasing the games online.. And an Internet connection, of course.

I was thinking that way too. But need to find a free mount software that support win 8 since magic disc failed on install.

---

Update: Apparently Win 8 can auto mount iso without any 3rd party program. smile.gif

Not apparent. It's a fact tongue.gif W8 support mounting of ISO file natively. (after being tease by Unix and Mac users for upteen year laugh.gif)

I have searched for a while and it turned out that this is the only place that has discussion regarding Vostro 5460. Happy to join the conversation guys.

I have encountered few issues:
+ bad wifi, low range, if the router is in different room, the wifi dropping often and transfer speed low.
+ Intel HD4000 took ~1200MB ram constantly, regardless of usage. So actual ram is ~2900MB. I have tried both intel driver and stock driver and nothing changed.
+Dell Quickset limited configuration

Pros:
+ Quick boot time with ssd: ~10s Win 7. Mine took 22s restart time due to many apps running in background.
+Lightweight
+Long battery life (~3 hour video playback with max brightness)
...
Cons:
+ Bad wifi, you guys with i5M version can have Intel N6235 which is a lot better than N2230 (mine) and realtek, atheros (other guys)
+ Build quality is average, the laptop is not rock solid. if you lift it with one finger from one corner, the lid will open up slightly.
+ Trackpad dpi is quite low, when pairing with my bluetooth mouse (razer orochi) 2000dpi it's quite slow. Quick scholling and trackpad slightly disabled when typing is a plus.
+ Only 1 slot of ram, pro laptop ram like kingston hyperx and corsair vengeance usually come with a kit of 2x8gb ram. Dont know if low voltage ram supported.

My system: Vostro 5460 i3 3120M HD4000, 4Gb 1600C11 Ram (going to have 8Gb 1600C9 installed today) SSD Samsung 830 128Gb.

I see there's a new one 5560. Anyone considering that? There's VGA and RJ45 port.

I think people with I5 M wont have any problem with wifi because they come with N6235 Business class wifi card (same with N6200)

Best option is to swap out everything that swapable in this laptop and we're good to go:d
