QUOTE(scarxxx @ May 17 2013, 08:39 AM) suadrif, I will post up some pictures either tonight or tomorrow.. What else you want to know about this laptop? Do let me know so I can take some shots.. What is your Vostro model? i3, i5M or i5U? If i5M please run a battery test. Put about 50% brightness with wifi on let's see how long it can sustain. Thanks. |

QUOTE(suadrif @ May 22 2013, 06:51 PM) if using ULV, u get better battery lifetime Just go for i5M. If you concern about battery life you should get Inspiron 14 cause it got 6 cell with ULV processor but cheaper price...if using non-ULV processor, will u get better performance? if i take the non-ULV processor, with windows 8, upgrade to 8GB ram, and change from HDD to SSD. is it the better option? or just take the ULV processor with mSATA with 8GB ram? According to review which I saw, i5 ULV for vostro maximum can only 4~5 hours, while i5 M around 3~3.5 hours. Not difference much seriously. Of course 1899 version is best deal, cause you can buy better quality of SSD like Plextor which have better speed if you set it as boot. But overall depends on how you use. Why need 8GB RAM? 4GB not sufficient? |

QUOTE(xyuenx @ May 22 2013, 07:52 PM) But Inspiron 14 is much much heavier. 2kg if not wrong. ya but what I trying to tell him that is if battery is the MAIN concern shouldn't go for this.I guess the most popular reason people buying this model is for its slimness and lightness. EDIT: Sry if made you confused. Both SATA and mSATA version is 3.0, so no worries. This post has been edited by aristotletan: Jun 2 2013, 11:54 PM |

QUOTE(suadrif @ Jun 4 2013, 08:00 AM) Yes. He is right, and I was wrong. According to what Dell Specialist in Chia said, he said that half-sized SSD will work, something like picture below: ![]() But then someone asking to him that "Is there any solution to install SSD without taking HDD?" He replied, "The only solution is since there is no ODD, so can try to use empty ODD space to put a SSD, but maybe problem like cannot detect or not compatible might occur." Source (in Chinese) |

Dear Vostro 5460 user:
DON't BUY half-sized mSATA SSD. This is because its BIOS itself doesn't support using MSATA SSD as boot-up, only can be used as cache. If you really want a cache mSATA, u should buy ultrabook version. This post has been edited by aristotletan: Jun 8 2013, 02:47 AM |

QUOTE(scarxxx @ Jun 8 2013, 09:09 PM) Thanks aristotletan... Too bad I can't read chinese even though I am a chinese. But then the statement below is quite confusing:If what he mentioned is correct then even we plug in the mSata into the machine, mSata will not be appearing in the device to boot from in the bios screen? If yes, then there is no point getting mSata in order to confirm this, owners with the highest spec can only verify by going into the bios and check em out. QUOTE 如果要使用机械和ssd的混合硬盘模式需要拆卸光驱 Translated: If you want to use mechanical drive (HDD) with SSD hybrid, you may disassemble optical drive?? But there's no ODD present in Vostro 5460, maybe use the ODD slot? Seriously I'm not sure. This post has been edited by aristotletan: Jun 8 2013, 09:30 PM |

QUOTE(suadrif @ Jun 13 2013, 08:09 AM) could u explain little bit more on this? If you don't want bloatware and able to install windows 8 by yourself, just take Linux..i m now yet to decide either to take linux or win 8. how bout the boot time? how fast? Those blotware including dell backup, dell digital delivery, dell support center, Dell Video and many more... Beside drivers, all of them are use useless for me, beside Dell Quickset, which is very important. Top up RM300 for a genuine licence and wireless mouse are quite expensive. Look at Inspiron 14 model. Pricing between ubuntu and Windows 8 version only RM100. Even though if you buy genuine OS, the 1 year warranty is limited for hardware only, not software. So I think is not worth. But if genuine OS is a must, why don't you buy a OEM licence separately for Rm279 or less? Generally, boot time is faster than expected. Well, I don't have Vostro 5460. But I help my friend to do formatting using Inspiron 14 i5-ULV model, it was fast! But it takes time to be fast. For the first few time was slower due to windows update etc. EDIT: For my case, Touchpad for Inspiron 14 isn't good either. So I removed the synaptics driver and error is reduced. But if without driver, multitouch cannot be used and Fn keys won't work. This post has been edited by aristotletan: Jun 13 2013, 03:04 PM |

QUOTE(guitar8888 @ Jun 14 2013, 12:40 AM) anybody can explain on the reason why the 'MY COMPUTER' section doesn't show the 32gb msata SSD? thanks! Cause you use your mSATA as cache. but your bios don't have option to switch it. It compiles a list of commonly accessed files and moves them to the cache SSD, so that over time the most commonly used apps / files are accessed very quickly. Cache drive is not available in my computer and device manager. Even it doesn't appeared there doesn't mean it doesn't exist. If you don't believe can take out your casing and see by yourself. |

QUOTE(guitar8888 @ Jun 14 2013, 01:18 AM) Oh alright. So it just works as a cache. I thought it would be a normal harddisk whereby I can throw my files into it. My device manager is able identify that SSD. Ooh is it? Sry for the mistake. cause I only understand the mechanism but never tried it. Thanks. Thanks for the prompt reply. |

QUOTE(PsVitaForLife @ Jul 11 2013, 12:02 AM) Wondering should i get this model with the Core I5 3230M with Ubuntu Dos at RM1720 + rm300 for 128Gb SSD + Rm50 windows 8 Keys Samsung build quality better than Dell Vostro. Not only that, touchpad is better, 1 additional RAM slot, and better speaker. OR Go for samsung ativBook 7 with Full HD + 128gb SSD + 1.5Kg + 6-7 hours battery life ( Due to ULV core i5 ) at rm2860. But both laptop consider different "class" already. You already know vostro is standard processor with a low-mid range of Nvidia card, while samsung don't have dedicated graphic card, so depends on you need that kind of "performance" or not. Anyway can consider Samsung Series 5 NP530U4E at RM2.3k |

QUOTE(kiasuXD @ Jul 18 2013, 03:56 AM) I have my eyes on the DELL VOSTRO 5460/i5-3230M/4GB/500GB/14"/2G/W8/SILVER version. Been using Acer Aspire 2920 for 5 years and thinking of an upgrade. This is the recommended system requirements for CIVCan this laptop play games? Pretty much the only "graphic-intensive" game I play is Civilization V. So whether or not this laptop can play the game can make or break the deal for me. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « So I think Vostro 5460 meets the requirements of CIV beside processor maybe.
